As I write in late October and the first days of November, Israel is yet again in a war for survival, which should not be surprising given that the objective of its enemies is its extermination. This early on, the war is paradoxically in a state of flux. That is, although the battle space in Gaza is subject to intense preparation as Israel degrades Hamas defenses and logistics, a full ground campaign has yet to begin, although as you read it may have begun and ended. At present, lines have been established to cut Gaza in two, the plan being, apparently, to work slowly and methodically, as if Israel has all the time in the world, which because of international pressure, it does not. Optimally, however, a full campaign should not begin “now,” and this is why.
In May of this year, the president of Iran met with senior members of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and said, “We consider the collapse of the Zionist regime [and, as he stated later, “the end of Israel”] to be very close.” Though Israel’s enemies routinely call for its destruction, a confident prediction of the timeline is unusual and cannot have failed to impress experienced observers—in fact, to have stopped them short. But as his remarks fit nicely with the progress and purpose of Iran’s increasingly rapid nuclear strides, it is doubtful that all but a few analysts associated them with a more complex and hidden strategy.
To wit, that strategy, much simplified: Hamas prepares for and executes the ISIS-style attack of October 7. The sheer, Holocaust-reminiscent barbarity galvanizes Israel, which, spurred by emotion and necessity, decides upon the destruction of Hamas at whatever cost. If Israel bogs down in fighting through the dense urban rubble of Gaza—or even if it doesn’t, but has dangerously concentrated its resources on the southern front—Iran instructs Hezbollah to fire its more than 100,000 missiles at Israel’s cities, its closely concentrated critical infrastructure, and its military targets (Hamas has done this routinely, but its missiles are much less capable), and to let loose its formidable armed forces upon Israel’s north. Simultaneously, Iran launches hundreds of ballistic missiles at the same exposed and essential concentrations. A combination of Hezbollah, Syrian, and Iranian forces resident on the Golan front mounts an attack from the northeast. A carefully prepared rising on the West Bank occurs in conjunction with parallel operations (such as in the July 2021 trial run) by Israeli Arabs within Israel itself. If Israel appears to be tottering, the Arab street may force now coldly friendly, apparently neutral, or merely gun-shy Arab states to join in the frenzy, much as they did in 1948, 1967, and 1973.

I had hopes that this time would be different. I had hopes that the Israelis, after this latest outrage, would say “Enough!”…that they would respond in a way that made it clear to the ‘Palestinians’ and their UN supporters that this time it would *not* be “business as usual”, and that Hamas would be eradicated once and for all.
While the IDF started off well by warning all Gazan ‘civilians’ to move south while simultaneously cutting off all water, electricity, food and fuel to Hamas, I knew it would not last. The documented *participation* of the Gazan ‘civilians’ (men, women and even children!) in the Oct. 7th massacres gave them perfect justification for doing so. All that was further needed to bring this to a swift conclusion was a statement similar to this:
“To Hamas and all the residents of Gaza, and to the entire world watching, I make the following solemn vow:
That the IDF will continue this military action without pause until ALL THE HOSTAGES are released. There will be no ‘humanitarian aid’ for Hamas to steal, no electricity, water fuel, medicine, food or anything else allowed in until ALL THE HOSTAGES are released. This promise is Written In Stone and will not be changed or modified in any way, no matter how dire the civilian situation gets.

I always wondered why anyone would take prisoners and later release them other than to prolong the fighting by offering faint hope to the as yet uncaptured.
Perhaps because they cling to a faint hope that releasing prisoners will get hostages returned? And/or hoping to retain some some political support from faltering “allies”?
I’m currently reading “The View From The Ground” by arguably Americas greatest 20th century war correspondent Martha Gellhorn. Her chapter, “The Arabs of Palestine” written in 1961 for the Atlantic is eye opening and is as current today as it was when she wrote over 60 years ago.
One particular passage is sobering. She is in Israel interviewing a Christian Arab schoolteacher who spoke candidly without fear. He said that Arab governments and Palestinian Arabs rejected Partition in 1948. They attacked the Jews and lost. Gellhorn asked him: ” If the position were reversed, if Jews had started the war and lost it, if you had won the war, would you now accept Partition? Would you give up part of the country and allow the 650,000 Jewish residents of Palestine – who fled from war – to come back?”
“Certainly not,” he said, without an instant’s hesitation, “But there would have been no Jewish refugees. They had no place to go. They would all be dead or in the sea.”
And therein lies the problem. So consumed by hate and self pity the Arab cannot find it within himself to grant to his Semitic brother the accommodation his brother freely grants to him. He simply doesn’t possess empathy. Israel, a country of 9m surrounded by 300m hating Arabs. Where’s the future?

And they want the administration of Gaza to return to them so they can have the offshore gas deposits with no legal complications.
