Ottawa, take your journalism subsidy and shove it!

The LeaderPost sales team can’t even sell the front page ad position. That’s a house ad on the bottom of the page.

Mainstream media is dying. Pipeline Online currently has almost 10x as many display ads as the Leader Post Tuesday edition. So the federal Liberals are going to conveniently increase their journalism subsidy substantially, just as an election could happen at any time. Imagine that.

As my own boss, I can tell you, Pipeline Online does not accept any federal subsidies, not will it apply for any.

Which of the other media will say the same?

  1. Kudos to you Brian. Your work is intelligent and extremely well done.

If ever there was a time to campaign on a total cut to all media subsidies it is now.

Axe the Carbon tax. Axe the media subsidies. And while we’re at it… well the list is too long to get it all in here, but that’s the gist of it. Would be a good time to sharpen the axe.

  2. L – Pipeline Online, an example of journalism, information based on facts and reality.
An aggregate of such would be a viable, credible news business.

“In the absence of facts, there is no truth. There is only ideology.” – Sultan Kinish

  3. The criminals in power never had to buy the corporate media’s ideological loyalty, it was there in spades, an already saturated market. Now it’s pure subsidy of their so-called private sector Court Eunuchs. The only free press in Canada are those few organizations who don’t take the whore money.

    1. Big government allied with big business (not limited to media) and big labour is a big problem for the citizens.
A confluence easy to recognize given the gathering of elitist power under the Gritdipshit coalition of mediocrity.
      Cut off their money and privileges to cut off their power over us is the only solution to that overreach problem;
Why we limit government in the first place in defining a mixed economy, a debate that never happens anymore.

Trudeau grew government then claimed he had reduced unemployment, when he laundered jobs through the civil service. Yet another dishonest manipulation by the grotesque government run by corrupt collectivists.

  4. When the subsidies end, and they will end soon,,, and media companies start loosing money by the truck load, there’ll be three answers for them.
1.) Try to slash employees, and consolidate even further.
2.) Lobby billionaire Leftists, et al Soros, for funding.
    3.) Shut the doors.

My question,,, should right leaning groups/companies buy up some of the bigger named MSM, like G&M, NP, The T Star, …… and recreate them as Musk is doing with Xwitter??? or just let them go the way of the buggy whip and pick axe and have the battle between left and right fought in social media?

  5. Unfortunately the “leader” of the so called Conservative Party has stated he will not get rid of the MSM graft.
Every thing pullover says after that is just so much political bullshit.
I don’t see any hope for Canada. Just one CCP Communist Cesspool Party after another.

    1. It’s not known as The Uniparty for nothing, Mr. Knot. I work for the PPC as it does have a reason to exist, states why and what it’s policies are. Notice the absence of such forthrightness from the CCP, endearing though Poilievre is? As Pelosi said in the US Congress, “you have to vote for it to see what’s in it“. I am afraid it will be just the same-old same-old. The CCP will remove the carbon tax and bring in a carbon not-a-tax. They will subsidize swindlemills and subsidy farms and battery factories and follow through on all the other Davos whims. The political class has been captured; it must be metaphorically defenestrated, as the new Argentinian President understands.

Note: During the Defenstration of Prague no one died, although dignity was insulted. For the historians here, I am, of course, referring to the second, later and well-known, defenestration of Prague; not the first one. It seems to be a Prague thing.

  6. “journalism” subsidizing is actually pimping; Librano gov is the pimp and the ‘journalists’ receiving the $ perform the fellatio for theTurd & co.
But wait, there’s even worse: all the $s involved are our/tax-payers’ money.

  7. They are so desperate for power they can’t even hide their totalitarian tenets like control of the media.
If you give the government less money, it has less power and thus control over you. Tax cuts for liberty.
The axe the tax and subsequent equally political Atlantic Canada carve out is a gift to the Conservatives.
What crazy desperation is next, crowing over climate change at 1.6%, crushing our world class energy industry?
Oh, right, they’re doing just that. But they wouldn’t be stupid enough to “protect” .0000001% of the country.
Oh, right, they did that too. Their next policy is praying for lower inflation when consuming voters know better.
With a government that has put people in poverty and economic insecurity for the first time in their lives.

Many of of us have seen the catastrophic results of unlimited government and duly warned our progeny when nice hair cabin boy Justin time for the LPC came along, but my answer was they wanted to see it for themselves.

Seen. Vote withdrawn. Now making good money, the boy blunder on the electoral cross hairs of Echos and millennials, exposed to the naive class as the grand phony mendactic megalomaniacs he and his party are.

Now the tax cutting bean counter who ditched his glasses doesn’t seem so bad. Less government now resonates.

  8. A little off topic but not by much so I thought I’d share this with the rest of the class. Dana White hits it out of the park with this one about the “media”. I’m sure he’s talking about the U.S. media but you could easily apply this to Canada’s media high priests.
And like me he asks…Who are these people?…Where do they come from? (Hi Andy Coyne)… What have they ever done?…What have they ever built? And why does their opinion matter?
Anywho. Short but to the point. *language advisory*

  9. The buildings these companies own are worth more than the company’s cash flow will show. Without the gov’t welfare, they’d close at the end of the week, after self promoting for 3 days.

The T.Eaton Company (which had ALL their buildings paid off a generation prior to facing troubles) in Canada had similar paperwork, remember them?
The New York Times building, is worth more than the NYTimes stock price. If someone was able to buy the “A shares” from the owner, they could sell the building and make some real money.

The only reason for the gov’t of Canada to keep the Canadian MSM on life support is to support the gov’t of the day, and their associated agendas.

My personal view is, let them fail, and entrepreneurs will start new companies selling the news after that. Why would anyone want the old buildings now that they don’t serve a purpose? The old Calgary Herald / National Post building in central Calgary was sold early this year to U-Haul at a terrifically low price…. It’s quite a building, and location.
The vast majority of people who have been employed for any amount of time in the Canadian MSM are all #Libranos supporters and have nothing to offer to a new news entity. It’s a real short list.

I doubt a good case being made for even keeping the various schools of journalism open in Canada when the gov’t welfare stops. It’s not like schools haven’t been teaching English for the past 150 years already.
When the gov’t of Manitoba stopped hiring nurses in the province in the 1990’s, they closed the nursing schools during that time as well. Weirdly they kept the fine arts faculty open at the U of M…

The National Post was a great newspaper but I can’t see any similar “greatness” in Canada’s radio or Tv networks. I see their contempt for me/us, and they should feel it from us as well.

Perhaps the great ones will find their own space, and simply connect to X each day to draw their customers in like Keean Bexte and The Counter Signal, and Candice Malcolm and Andrew Lawton at True North, and Ezra Levant at The Rebel.

  10. How interesting that the effectively state-owned and state-run controlled media wants Holocaust “education” to be made mandatory.

It is a good general rule to question the motivation of those who rule us “teaching” us something.

Out of curiosity, can anyone point to a book written about the Holocaust prior to the 1960s?

  11. Just a reminder that the Sun papers chain and all it’s so-called conservative writers, willingly take the gov’t dollars.

  12. The Shipping News by Annie Proulx 1993, is a novel of the newspaper industry quite well.
Made into a movie of same name around 2000.
    Worth the read.

  13. Pipeline is a source for me, and I notice it is becoming frequently referenced via other sources.
