I’m all for tax cuts, but I really can’t see the point of cutting gasoline taxes for a period of six months. Does the Manitoba NDP believe that the trend towards rising living costs is going to reverse by then? I’d like to know what crystal ball they’re looking at.
In any case, 14 cents per liter in gas tax revenue is roughly what the Manitoba government devotes to road maintenance and construction. If Wab is anything like his predecessors this move leads me to believe that they’re going to cut the highways budget. They always do.

They’ve already gutted the winter maintenance. Highway 75 has been closed several times in the past few weeks. One time it was glare ice and they didn’t come out until 24 hours after the storm.
Did I mention highway 75 is still under construction? Morris to ste agathe is 1 lane each way. A 28 km stretch where you cannot pass and southbound has no shoulder. With the cold temps here to stay, are they going to keep it like this all winter? People will be killed.
Well, just look down below one post and you’ll see how a moratorium on gas taxes can do some good. It gives trucking companies a little tiny reprieve. Where I live regular fuel has a 61 cent tax per gallon and diesel is way up at 78 cents per gallon. And, that’s only the state tax. There is federal taxation on that same gallon of gas.
The point is that gasoline and diesel costs start the whole ball of wax rolling. Truckers pay high gas…that gets passed onto the retailers of the products they are transporting, which gets passed onto the customer causing higher prices…which erodes consumer confidence that is reflected in manufacturers making a smaller supply, which in turn results in fewer products to transport, which again hits the truckers….
Round and round it goes. So, despite the lack of details and the minimal benefit…we should be ecstatic at a moratorium on gas taxes regardless of the amount. It’s a good start.
I agree. Why anyone in their right mind would disagree with a tax holiday is a mystery to me.
Roy Romanow did that to Saskatchewan, and by the time the Sask Party came to power, every rural highway was decimated, and required far more cost to rebuild, than if they would have been maintained properly through out. They left the rural highways go, not only because they were trying to save money,,, but mostly because their spite for rural votes. (the NDP will never be forgiven for closing 52 rural hospitals in our province)

Historically speaking, NDP governments care less about MB roads that Conservative ones. I have a customer that was a career field manager with MB Highways, related this to me.
What kills me is that Manitoba has a wealth of resources – from hydro electricity (which Manitoba Hydro has bungled) to access to major markets (into the US and the Lakehead), great farmland in the south, and natural resources throughout the north); including the Port of Churchill that while not year round access is still access to markets directly from Manitoba. Manitoba should be a powerhouse except for really bad governments – it is a given that the NDP will squander tax money on useless projects, but the PCs have been nothing to write home about either.
The PCs in Manitoba are Liberals on Wellington Crescent, which is why the Liberal party in Manitoba has been obliterated. They serve no purpose. You’ll need a Manitoba Party to make any real change.
Churchill? The shipping season into Hudson Bay is only seven months long. That makes Churchill useless as a port except for cargoes like wheat which are highly predictable and can be stored indefinitely. Churchill also has no major highway access and a rail connection which is feeble at best.
And none of these things can be fixed by any change in provincial government.
The shipping season in and out of Churchill is only about three and half months; Mid-July to late October.

Excellent idea. I think they should do like some of the range clearance initiatives: Form a native-only company to get the contract to dig up that dump looking for one body. The people that are so motivated to find the body can be given a shovel and minimum wage and go at it. I mean it’s better than sitting in a tent blocking a road, right? After a year of diddging we’ll see how important recovering that body is.
Any tax cut is a good tax cut. Never turn down a chance to have less of your money stolen by socialists. They’re going to cut the road budget anyway, you better believe it.
When Red Rachel and her Communist Cabal ruled Alberta some major roads turned into gravel roads. They even quit tarring the cracks leading to the surface shattering from freeze/thaw cycle. She cancelled water bomber contracts 2 days before 2500 houses burned in Fort McMurray. Also hospital wait times went up. However government unions received big wage increases.
Scar – not to mention that she mocked Brian Jean for bringing up concerns about the Fort Mac fire even as his own home was being destroyd.
When the government gives you a tax cut, take the tax cut. When they increase taxes later, scream bloody murder and elect some other party that promises to cut taxes.
Rinse and repeat.
Things are really bad when a Socialist party cuts taxes.
Here’s the depressing thing. Suppose someone gets in the White House and does everything EVERYTHING right to negate inflation (cuts government spending and printing money, opens up domestic fuel sources again, legislates back the “Green New Deal” nonsense, puts higher restrictions on welfare etc). In months you would see significant improvement across the economic spectrum…leading to a wave of consumer confidence.
All of that…ALL OF IT…would be submarined almost instantaneously when the FED starts playing around with interest rates with the base purpose of obliterating any benefits from the previously listed due to political ideology.
The next president in a position to control inflation must be an accomplished orator that can explain to the people in layman’s terms what he/she is doing, why, and how other facets of the government (The FED) is trying to throw up obstacles. Unfortunately, Trump sucks at that part of politics.
Trump is our only hope and he’s a lot wiser this time.
If they keep spending like drunken sailors, but cut tax revenues, then the debt is going to grow all that much faster.
