The progressive asks, “what is best for the criminal?” Its like a tic. They can’t help themselves. You have to expend a lot of effort just to get them to the point where they realize you don’t share their goals.
A short thread on crime. And a fairly vivid illustration.
Just an aside … but what third world country is this? That doesn’t have a building code requiring safety glass in a door? That door glass shatters in long, deadly, shards … not tiny pieces like First World codes require. Can you imagine if that’s a 4 yo toddler smashing his tonka truck through the glass door?
Safety glass isn’t going to stop a brick. If not with a simple gun shot, a baseball bat aimed at Mohammod’s head as he reached the top of the ladder would have been sufficient, if not available, heavy pieces of convenient furniture dropped on him. Once Mohammod cleared the railing, unless you were armed or knew how to fight, you run. In any event, he deserved to be lethally restrained.
If you are concerned about the Canadian criminal code, you cannot use a weapon unless your attacker brandishes one first. So a well placed front kick to the cranium as the offender climbs to the balcony would do just fine – reasonable force and all. He would not survive the fall in any shape to re-offend.
In Canada, once he is in the house brandishing a knife, you are now subject to armed robbery, and potential assault with a deadly weapon. Under the criminal code, you are legally justified in getting the 12 ga Mossberg down from the wall display. If you were smart, the trigger lock and wall secure lock are removable in under 6 seconds. Ammo in a separate location, but nothing says you can’t drill amd exercise in your spare time, to get the retrieval and loading of the firearm down pat so it is in fact deployable in seconds. All legal.
In Canada, the police may charge you, but the Prosecutor decides whether you go to trial. If you are offered a summary conviction and fine, … don’t be a dumbass. Pay the downhill ski tax, and be happy. You are alive and your family safe, and you are in and out of the “system” in a few days.
Again, if you follow the law, they can charge you all they want, but the reality is it’s a shit-ton of work and headache for them. Make their life easy by making sure if you are going to use a firearm in self-defence, follow the legal requirements. As I understand it, all these laws and regs are searchable. Be pro-active as a firearm owner. Know the law, how it applies, and what/when/where you need to be about if someone does ever break down your door, so that if it happens, you already know your Rules of Engagement!
This is the purest fantasy.
You -will- be charged, no matter what.
You -will- go to trial, no matter what.
You -will- be financially ruined and lose all your possessions. For sure.
If you kill/maim the attacker with a firearm, nothing is going to save you. Not video evidence, not physical evidence, not a hundred eye witnesses. You’re done. It better be worth it.

There is one word that goes with crime, that word is PUNISHMENT and lots of it.
No sympathy for people too stupid to not pick up something resembling a bat and smash his head like a melon before he gets to the balcony. Too violent? O.K. At least you could push him over once he’s on the top end of the ladder.
That wouldn’t work for me because I live in a bungalow. Fortunately for him he wouldn’t have to waste time finding a ladder and climbing up before he can see he’s at the wrong end of a shotgun.

The criminal has the Ability, Intent and Means to cause you serious harm. In the ladder case, the criminal had already lashed out at the people. That is a pretty strong case.
You can’t just blow someone away in Canada on your doorstep because they are holding a kinfe and you are scared! But if they have forced their way in and lunged at you and are following you inside, you can legally defemd yourself with as much force as necessary to stop the attack and no more.
If you allowed them to force their way into the house, you’ve already lost. I see a crazy MF brandishing a knife on my doorstep, that’s when I’m reacting. And I ain’t worrying about no GD gov’t law, either.
That is why I have an aluminum bat behind my front door and no reservations against using it. If you get past that I really get nasty

A teen standing there holding a kinfe, talking tough, but not advancing nor forcing their way in, and otherwise not using the knife in a threatening manner? Can’t just shoot ’em.

For a good way to tell, watch youtube vids showing how cops deal with a knife-carrying suspect. If you follow their example, you have a far better case – you are following police training and procedures! Be hard for a prosecutor to demand that YOU show better SA and tactical capacity than a police professional!

That said, public policy has failed here. This criminal knows he can use deadly force to subvert the state and impose his will on law-abiding taxpayers. One way to see violent armed robbery is technically as an act of armed insurrection against the state, no?

Oh, I like that. Hornet knockdown works great on the yellow jackets. In the eyes of an attacker, even better.

First things first!
You need the will to defend yourself and your family! These people had no will to resist. They were somehow hoping their non violent response would deter the criminal.
They failed. They are lucky they didn’t pay with their lives.
There are a lot of things that you can do that are non violent, and then escalate to non deadly force. Finally, you can escalate to potential deadly force (falling a full story is potentially fatal.)
One: Call the cops, leave the phone on and recording your verbal warning and resistance, and your play by play of what he is doing. yell and scream! They were too quiet and too controlled, SCREAM SHRIEK YELL!!!
Two while he is on the ladder, throw small to medium stuff at him, like cans or water bottles. You are not trying to knock him off the ladder, just discourage him. Ditto, pour a pot full of water or soup or throw a rug or towel over his head.
If that doesn’t work, use a broom stick, or a chair and poke at him. Impede his progress, still only discouraging him. Make sure the worthless police know he is not stopping.
Third, non lethal force. Spear/Stab at him, push the ladder to the side, and make it fall.
Start throwing large items at him, chairs, speakers. Hit his exposed head with the blunt object, like a bat or frying pan. Whack his hands when he puts them on the railing. Blind him with a rug, towel, or spray him with something. Use an extinguisher, which makes a great blunt object too. Attack his hands and arms before he can pull himself on the balcony.
They never really actively resisted. They never really tried to stop him. Any resistance may very well convince him to go elsewhere.
Where were the police? Minutes away? Ten or Fifteen or Thirty Minutes. And it only takes the criminals a few seconds to kill your @$$ D E A D, Dead!
