The cost of the federal bureaucracy grew by 31 per cent over the past two years;
Since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau came to power in 2015, the feds have added more than 98,000 new bureaucrats onto the government payroll.
That trend shows no signs of slowing down, with 21,290 extra staff added last year.
“Was there a bureaucrat shortage in Ottawa before Trudeau took over?” Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, said. “Canadians need a more efficient government, not a bloated government full of highly paid bureaucrats.”
The federal government now employs 357,247 bureaucrats, according to the latest data from the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, released June 26.

Lessee here. The 2023 population of Canada is just over 40 million and the article said there are now 357,247 bureaucrats.
40,000,000/357/257 = ~112 rounded
Now some of that 40 million are children and some are unemployed or retired, so it’s a fair amount under 112, but that means that the ones of that 112 working and paying taxes are supporting a bureaucrat. And they are paying to support the ones of that 112 that aren’t working.
Working Canadians, give yourself a nice round of applause for your generous support of all those less fortunate than you who have no means of support without you.
(In a hurry. Got to go. Poorly written, but y’all get the point.)
In 1968 Canada was the third wealthiest nation on the planet. Then disaster struck. An obnoxious, arrogant, supercilious, champagne Socialist and political dilettante named Trudeau became Prime Minister. The worst disaster ever to strike Canada, until now. When he took control, Ottawa spent 30% of Canada`s total economic output, when he left this had ballooned to 53%. In 1968 Canada`s national debt was $11.3 billion, the Federal Deficit was ZERO, when he departed the debt was $128 Billion and the annual deficit was $25 Billion. This was just the beginning of the descent of Canada. His putative offspring has eclipsed these figures many times over. I weep for Canada.
A great many years ago, I recall being in school and the teacher was saying that Argentina was a country that would develop into a first class country and that its resources were similar to Canada. Of course, Argentina COULD have done so…..except for stupid politicians…..and now Argentina goes through yet ANOTHER round of inflation. Canada seems to be following the path of Argentina rather than the other way around from so many years ago.
Art, you spelled ‘Venezuela’ wrong.
Actually, I didn’t…..and Venezuela is a simply a more recent example of the same folly. South Africa is following a similar path.
And – a REAL scary one – Turkey. Erdogan has been playing the interest-game for all he’s worth, trying to get carry-trade from foreign investors who smell a cheap profit – the problem being, they make less-than-or-equal-to 12%, and then inflation slaps them for 30%. Needless to say, it ain’t going well…
At one point in (fairly) recent world history, Argentina was either the world’s richest nation, or in the top 3.
I remember a scene in the movie “Fitzcarraldo” in which the Argentinian elite arrived in their horse-drawn coaches to the beautiful Buenos Aires opera house to hear Caruso sing, and their grooms held up buckets of freshly decanted champagne for the horses to drink.
DHL, and not one thin dime has been paid on the principle, we are still paying interest on the buffoons father’s debt. Think about that, any of those who can actually think. All canadian government debt has interest being paid, just interest. THINK for once in your lives.
All canadian government debt has interest being paid, just interest.
Not really. For most years since 1968, the debt AND accruing interest has been rolled over. New “money” is borrowed for the outstanding debt and interest, and additional “money” is borrowed for the spending shortfall in the new fiscal year.
How many occasions has there been in the past 50 years where the budget was balanced and no net-new borrowing was undertaken; in other words that interest was paid with taxes rather than new debt?
Thing on THAT!
You do understand that you agreed with me. wtf DO YOU THINK ROLLING OVER DEBT DOES? Balanced budgets do not mean any debt has been paid it just means there is no debt that year, maybe. The debt is still there and growing. Did you take some sort of government math class?
Yes Trudeau one started this country on the path to disaster and Trudeau is finishing the job with the support of 60 % of Canadians.
Not much hope.
And the 357,247 federal bureaucrats are just the tip of the economic iceberg once you factor in all their provincial and municipal counterparts and that considerable chunk of the private sector that is continually engaged in (often useless) government projects.
17% (or roughly $281 billion) of Canada’s GDP is from the “non-profit” sector. How much of that is government funded for activities that the government doesn’t think they can undertake themselves?
There is no such thing as non-profit. When people are being paid, that my friends is a profit. They, the organization, does not usually pay taxes on their revenue. Canada is a stupid country.
Some things do not change. Call any government line and you will get a recorded message that due to increased activity lines are busy and you will be put on hold. Except for one. Call the RCMP fireams office and you will not be put on hold. You will get the “we’re busy” recording, and then they will hang up. That’s one way of delaying people trying to get or renew their PAL.
that doesnt include provincial or civil employees , 30% of canadians are employed by governments. i wont say work
Morning news in the USA. Prez Biden has more people working for the White House than any other Prez before him. Try 500+.
Employed vs working. Important differentiation.
BUREAUCRATS
WORKING
???
An oxymoron of biblical proportions.
The Free World in action.
Now shut up and work for me, slave.
I recall several years ago someone determining that just over 50% of the population of Ontario received some or all of their income from some level of government. There’s no coming back from that.
+++DR
Considering Justine has used tax dollars to fund consulting firms to the tune of nearly a billion dollars what do those snivel servants do all day because it’s clear Trudy prefers to spend money on consultants?
How many civil servants working from home, are actually working a second job, while essentially doing nothing on their government job?
How many civil servants are working a second job
Some are, I would guess, but probably not a high percentage. Gubbermint workers are the dregs, and too used to their sloth and mental torpor to ever be capable of doing real work for a real employer.
I can imagine the bureaucrats who generate the SINs might have spun off a few extra for themselves. That way they can hold down a number of fed jobs at the same time, and max out on the Covid benefits. It’d be no great stretch for them to cover multiple bureaucrat jobs at once.
Justine has used tax dollars to fund consulting firms what do those snivellers do all day
Not even Junior is so stoopid to have confidence in the moronocracy in Ottawa. They are paid to be kept off the street and to stuff the ballot boxes with reliable Liberal votes whenever called upon.
If you want something done that actually needs to be done, then pay a consultant $300 tax dollars an hour for results. It’s win-win-win. Junior’s happy, the consultancy is happy, and the slumber of the bureaucrats is undisturbed with requests to do something.
…And what is the strength of our Armed Forces? It would be interesting to know how badly that number has shrunk under Trudeau. Mind you, the troops should also be included in the government employee numbers.
The last jobs report by the US Government claimed 209,000 were created last month … and 60,000 of those jobs were government “jobs”. Almost one third of all jobs created were government jobs. In a word … that’s “unsustainable”.
https://www.cnbc.com/2023/07/07/jobs-report-june-2023-.html
In a word…
In a word, “Sovietization”.
lol, oh how the worm has turned.
they “estimated” which will be revised down next month, the same way they revised down the last 2 months at the same time…
All will be estimated downward EXCEPT the government jobs … which will become an even larger percentage of the adjusted number
It’s the 11th of July. Neither my wife or I have had our 2022 income tax returns processed so far. It has never been this late before and now we are simple retirees.
That is how you get “reliable” voters … make them dependent upon your government for employment.
“In the carboniferous epoch, they promised abundance for all
By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul
But though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money would buy
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said, “If you don’t work, you die.”
Kipling was right!!
That’s on top of the programs that are contracted out (ex We charity ). But need extra bureaucracy to be able to spend ~ 3 million for a tree planting program and not plant a tree yet… give me the 3 million and I will call 5 tree planting outfits. Outlandish I know
give me the 3 million and I will call 5 tree planting outfits
Give me 3 mil in cash and they can stuff the trees.
As I read earlier on this thread, “Canada is a stupid country.” Would the dim bulbs ever notice that the 3 mil is missing or that the trees are unplanted? Canadians deserve whatever misfortunes befall them, living contentedly as they do in a hereditary cleptocratic idiocracy.
