  17. For argument’s sake, let’s bring up “My body. My choice.”

    So a woman consents to being a surrogate for a childless married, male/female (mom & dad) couple, should she ever be irredeemably flatlined.

    Legislation is passed, ironclad legal agreements are drawn up for all involved parties to sign, with some individual riders specifying special conditions the woman wants before agreeing to be a surrogate in the case of her brain flatlining. Her body. Her choice. All nice and legal except…

    … there will almost certainly come a time when a gubmint will wake up to find that the lifespan of fruit flies has [Oh teh HORROR!] been found to be less than 24 hours and a National State of Emergency will be declared. All laws and contracts are declared null and void and if takes impregnating all flatlined women with the Spawn of Satan to save the fruit flies, well then by golly! it must be done.

    Sad to say, even if the women has a ‘Living Will’ that specifies that under no circumstances is her brain-flatlined body ever to be used as a surrogate, I don’t trust any gubmint and its flunkies-by-bureaucratic-extension to respect any agreements. If a gubmint is willing to ride roughshod over individuals rights and freedoms while they are alive, I’d think they’d be overjoyed to take advantage when one is flatlined and can’t raise a fuss.

    The worst government is the one people fear. The best government is a small one that fears the people. Until one has a government that (fearfully!) does not interfere with citizens’ rights and freedom, this whole surrogate discussion is moot, IMHO.

  21. I oppose euthanasia for brain-dead people. I am a retired economics professor, and my 35 years of teaching first-year courses suggested that about one third of the students were brain dead. But as young adults they still had lives to lead.

  22. There’s a word that comes to mind from the weirdness of using dead people as surrogate mothers. Not quite fitting, but in the same way “I love the dead” by Alice Cooper also popped into my mind.

Out over Montana, or eastern Oregon, the lands of Big Empty, you have one of your $80 million jet fighters shoot a few holes in it, of time fused 20mm. Rounds put some nice holes in it, then explode elsewhere at super high altitude.
    Little chips of shrapnel fall to the ground, harming nothing. Meanwhile the balloon loses altitude, and your Rescue Rangers capture it when it lands. Duh. Next?
