Its always fun when Canada’s best and brightest make international news.

The Telegraph- Theatres spark outrage with black-only audience policy

According to the Toronto theatre, the purpose of the events is to facilitate “a safe environment for a personal and intimate discussion on the work made and performed by black artists”. It added that it welcomed everyone who self-identifies as black to attend this performance.

However, while white attendees could not be banned from attending the show on a Black Out night, the theatre made clear they would not be welcome.
“If someone identifies as a non-black person and requests to enter the room, a member of our team will be present to speak to that person.”

I usually add that everyone should help me attain this worthy goal (of being fabulously wealthy), but no-one has yet… More recently, I’ve suggested helping me get comfortably rich enough that I can buy out Google, Microsoft or Youtube and gut them like Elon Musk has done to Twitter…!

  10. I’ve experienced racial exclusion … without any such pronouncement.

    Back in the Early 1990’s, I went to see WAR at a venue in Emeryville, CA called Kimball’s East. I was literally the ONLY white person in the venue … despite most of the band being white. I guess I didn’t get the message that Kimball’s East was BLACKS ONLY. I sat down at the cocktail table seating … and was completely ignored by the waitress all night. She took orders, and delivered drinks to every single person sitting around me … but never once responded to my request. And the fine, upstanding, black folk sitting around me just laughed. I think they figured I’d leave or something? I didn’t. I enjoyed the music otherwise.

      Too bad. I was looking forward to reading what “a member of (their) team” might possibly say to a white person to justify excluding them.

  13. If they couldn’t “self-identify”, they’d need a race classification board to vet the entrants. That would be more than a little embarrassing.

    1. I believe the event is not until mid February, though the play has a multi-night engagement.

      From experience, the NAC does do these announcements.

      I haven’t gone to the NAC in several years, they’re just not that good anymore. Even their fund raising donor nights have been blah, so have been skipping them. They use to have good, solid Canadian talent on these nights. They need much better programming.

  22. I’m good with this. Freedom of association is a fundamental right. If we let blacks do it without making an issue out of it we’ll be able to do the same thing too.

      If there’s ANY public funding of this theatre, sue the f**kers.
