Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Sunwing and Southwest should merge.
We have a trip coming up Jan 10th, with Sunwing out of YYJ.
Needless to say, we’re apprehensive of how much can go wrong, and, can’t cancel without financial loss.
And Westjet, which officially buys out Sunwing in Q1 2023, is supposed to give us confidence that things will be better?
Seems like just another in a long list of differing infrastructure and systems that is ‘mysteriously’ falling apart.
WestJet will double down and the shit show they currently are will continue unabated.
Useless…if my last 2 trips outa Firebag are any indication.
Canada, desperately needs open skies.
And a full on Anihilation of monopolies.
So weird to hear from actual leaders.
Good letter. I agree with your sentiment.
Good luck everyone. I trust airlines only slightly more than the government.
You might wonder: how many taxpayer dollars did Sunwing receive in the last two years? From yesterday’s National Post:
“The winter travel debacle that began last week, and continues to unfold, exposes the federal Liberals’ toothless governance one last time before the calendar turns.
…
Sunwing received both a $375 million government loan and $100 million federal bailout during the pandemic.
If you listened to the Liberals back in 2019, the problem of Canada’s protected airline industry having its cake, eating it too then making passengers beg for food vouchers was meant to be fixed by their passenger bill of rights.
Yet as the last few years, and certainly the last week, have shown, the legislation is worth little more than those elusive meal vouchers that exist in theory, but so rarely make their way into delayed passengers’ hands.”

Yes, but let’s not forget that it was government policies in Canada and around the world that essentially killed the airline industry to begin with. The same goes for the many businesses that cratered as a result of government policy. The government killed or maimed many industries and so to pretend that government has bailed them out is a bit ridiculous.
The Government’s border closures killed our outfitting business. So do my wife and I deserve cheques courtesy of taxpayers to fix that?
Canadians want it that way but also expect to travel and get top-notch service.
Let’s give the people the vacation they voted for.
Most people are idiots and do not read the fine print. Was talking about this with a friend in Toronto. Sunwing is still operating in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. When you are cheap and choose a cheap vacation, do not cry the blues when the trip is abruptly canceled.
Read the fine print people!
From SUnwing’s statement”
“No action is required from customers and refunds will be processed within 30 days.”
How long have they had the customers’ money, and why take another 30 days to give it back, when this was obviously in the works for a period of time?
It takes that long for ground crews to check under all their planes’ seats for enough spare change to process the refunds.
move Sunwing to YPA.
You show up to the airport early and they move all the late people ahead of you.
sunwing is now competing with aircrapanada?
What’s causing this? Is this due to operational problems? Or is this political? Has Little Justin paid or ordered the airline to harass the two cities?
My daughter and her husband took a Sunwing vacation to Cancun and were fortunate to only have a 12 hour delay just a few days before this debacle. They learned that Sunwing did not have a crew for the original flight that was supposed to depart Cancun for Toronto at 10am.
Lickmuffin: I’d say political Libs paying for favors. Just in is not a nice person as we have learned. He is one nasty leader sort of reminders of Xi Jinping the leader of China.
I’d like to know how many flight cancellations, everywhere, are due to pilots off sick with vaxx injuries. Something that nobody will talk about.
Exactly Dan! The flight cancellations did not begin with this holiday. The flight industry has been decimated with the rash of deaths and sickness that have occurred within the industry. The flustercuck that occerred in baggage handling in Toronto is at the very bottom of the pyramid and the pilot shortage is at the top but combined it all adds up to the industry has, like everything else, lost the trust of the public. I remember the heady days of air travel in the Sixties and Seventies on Ward Air and similar companies and compare them to Air Canada today, a universe of difference and a time that we will never see again. I feel a rant starting so I’ll end it here.
This ^ and Dan’s .
I am currently sitting in Orange Co airport waiting for a flight back home … 3-days late … on a competing airline … after Southwest CANCELLED our flight home. Thanks Pete Buttigagg and husband … you’ve made this the WORST Christmas travel on the West Coast I’ve ever experienced. Oh! And make no mistake … you will be getting invoices and a bill for all my extra costs
Our staycation has been great! For the better part of three years, we haven’t been “allowed” to travel, being of pure blood. We still aren’t “allowed” to enter the U.S., our favourite destination.
At least our daughter and SIL dodged a bullet and arrived home from a Sunwing trip to Mexico, just before everything went south.
L – What could account for a shortage of pilots e.i. a unbroken line of empty syringes of …?
Where is Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson when you really need them?

“Sunwing Vacations@SunwingVacay·Dec 29Replying to @Carrie60095718
We had hoped to supplement demand from Saskatoon and Regina with the assistance of temporary foreign pilots. Sadly foreign pilot deployments were not agreed to and the
conditions and schedule have proven too significant for our subserviced partners to keep up with. -SK”
Maybe the Ukrainian Air Force pays better…
The government expects the airline to “appropriately compensate” everyone.
Now, there’s a weenie phrase. If the compensation goes by normal airline regs and the contract you get with your ticket, a lot of people aren’t going to be happy.
L – Perhaps Sunwing could solve the pilot shortage with a proven, tireless, go anywhere,
anytime pilot, the most famous name in extra long direct flights: Hal 9000.
After all he’s programmed for the 21st Century…
How bout the blow up autopilot from Airplane !
You know.. Charge your EV in your heated garage and make sure your back home before dark.. Otherwise you will turn into a pumpkin..
I could have traveled this year.. Spent that money on a nice new gas powered car for my wife..
Strangly enough.. Things are so expensive we are both working again.. Funny how that works eh..
Sunwing can’t run their business because the airports are no longer functioning. This is our useless federal government. And Moe is asking Omar the golem to fix it. The stupidity of our politicians never ceases to amaze me.
Which Star Wars movie did Omar star in?
I know that Michelle(the Wookie) Obama was in all of them
Much of this can be traced back to a couple of snowstorms. I suppose airlines heard there was never going to be any winter any more and went all in on planning around open airports all the time. Sort of like those people who go on a yacht cruise through the Northwest Passage after hearing it would never be hit by ice again, and yeah, got stuck in the ice.
But it will all be good until the next snowstorm some place.
Apparently this BS is caused by dated soft wear that is malfunctioning, and should have been replaced years ago.
Omar Alghabra calls the delays “unacceptable”.
But he’s actually referring to airline travel period.
And how many of the delays are from the Policies put in place by Omar Abracadabra?
