5. In a related story … PG&E has been cutting down thousands of heritage oaks in CA. Our city has been fighting a losing battle against PG&E to stop or at least minimize the 1,200 trees they are cutting in my city alone. Why are they cutting all these oaks? For fire safety? Nope. Not directly. They are cutting them so their Nat. Gas sniffing helicopters can have a clear line of sight (smell) to their underground gas lines. They want to fly gas-sniffing helicopters … to prevent another San Bruno underground gas explosion fire and deaths.

6. “Fell” vs “fall” a tree.

   In ’73 and ’74 I logged in the Upper Fraser Valley in and around McBride, BC. In that area, at that time, if you cut down trees you were a “faller”.

   The BC Ministry of Labour was starting to mandate safety courses for skidder jockeys, cat-skinners and fallers, so we all met in the Elks Hall and listened to a bright young fellow from Vancouver tell us what we had been doing wrong.

   At one point Lenny, a huge young man of Ukranian extraction with the remnants of his Old Country accent, stood up to take issue with something the Ministry Man had said:

   “So, you are saying that if I’m falling a leaning …”

   He was interrupted: “It’s felling a tree, not falling.” the urban expert interjected.

   Lenny continued, “Like I was saying, if I’m falling a tree …”

   “The correct term is felling. You are a feller, not a faller.”

   At which point Lenny stopped him. “If young feller tells me one more time I’m wrong, we are going to see a young feller fall.”
