Levy, Borax, and Kroc

In 1834, Commodore Uriah Levy bought Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello for $2,700. In the 1880s, the Harmony Borax Works paid Chinese immigrants $1.30 per day to mine borax in the often-brutal heat of Death Valley, California. In 1961, Ray Kroc strong-armed Mac and Dick McDonald into selling their restaurant chain, later worth billions, for $2.7 million.

The shock-and-awe these isolated facts elicit are off-kilter, thanks to the perceptual distortions of inflation and altered standards of well-being. The effect is to generate spurious narratives of villains and victims.

    1. My first job paid 45 cents an hour, and I was glad to have the work. Something I learned along the way is that it is a courteous and honorable thing to express one’s gratitude to an employer for having provided one the opportunity to work and earn.

      1. That was the minimum wage in 1945 or so. Are you 80+ years old and talking about your childhood? I made more money mowing lawns, raking leaves and shoveling driveways in the 1970s as a child, but that’s illegal now.

          1. Fine. I’ll pay you $5 an hour, and you can express your gratitude to an employer for having provided one the opportunity to work and earn.

        1. the article made some bogus companions…
that Rester aunt chain will soon
          be worth trillions,
or maybe two ounces of gold..

      2. roaddog, 28 bucks a week for a five and a half day week. Moved to the land of opportunity and tripled my income.

  1. Much the same thing happened with Tesla and Westinghouse. Nicola Tesla was a flake, Westinghouse was not, and Westinghouse helped Tesla lots. Once again, everything you know is a lie.

  2. We all benefit from global slave & child labour, the Progressive Globalists never mentions that nearly everything you own and wear was made in some slaver sweatshop in some Third World shithole.

    1. Child labor like letting a kid mow your lawn, rake your leaves, weed your garden or shovel your driveway?
Best leave that work to licensed professionals?

      1. Nope, the kind that forces them into a lifetime of it. It’s the same group that wants open borders to flood our labour markets so that those same labourers compete with milllions of extra labourers.

  3. Did any of you guys actually read the link?

It was a very interesting substack article showing how things are not always as they appear at first glance, especially when inflation is involved. If anyone is interested, my first job was Saturday mornings in the local market, I was 12 years old and I earned 2 shillings and sixpence an hour and the year was 1959.
