The best known recent pretendian case involves Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, widely regarded as one of Canada’s most successful and honoured indigenous scholars and legal professionals, who for decades claimed to be of aboriginal ancestry through her putative Cree father William Turpel. According to an October 12 CBC exposé, she even referred to herself as the “first Treaty Indian” appointed to the judicial bench in Saskatchewan history.
The CBC asked Turpel-Lafond how her father, William Turpel, could be Cree when his parents were British. “She refused to answer, only hinting at family secrets and shame, saying ‘I will never call anyone out’ … However, in a public statement days after the story was published, Turpel-Lafond declared that her father had been adopted.”

Danielle Smith anecdotally claiming a Cherokee ancestor is different from claiming that status to get a job at Harvard. Evidence of Indian status is sometimes hard to come by. On the census 150 years ago people might very well have had reasons not to claim Indian status in the census. Indians in the US weren’t citizens and couldn’t vote. There was no advantage to document Indian status. Membership in the Five Civilized Tribes of the American South is documented through something called the Dawes Roll around the turn of the 20th century. You aren’t on the Dawes Roll unless you applied to be on the Dawes Roll. I had 2 or 3 dozen Black neighbour families,most of whom claimed to be Cherokee, etc. Only one family was on the Dawes Roll as Creek. Why would so many Blacks claim to be Indian? Because Indian status was more acceptable in society than Black over 100 years ago.

Of the Five Tribes, the Cherokees were the largest holder of Africans as chattel slaves. By 1860 the Cherokees had 4,600 slaves. Many Cherokees depended on them as a bridge to white society. Full-blood Indian slave owners relied on the blacks as English interpreters and translators.
But of course these facts go against the “noble savage in harmony with Nature myth”…! 🙂

At the end of the Civil War the Cherokee Nation (and others) was required to give membership to freed Black slaves. That’s where most of the Black Cherokees came from plus there was some inter-racial marriage. The older generation of my 1911 former Black Creek Indian neighbours were 3/8 Creek by blood. The kids were 3/16.
And why is that we reward people for their (alleged) race?
No one admired Holocaust survivors because they cried all the time, nor would anyone tolerate someone pretending to be so victimised.
We have raised lying and weakness to be virtues.
Pretty sure “23 and Me” could sort this out pretty quickly.
Turpel Lafond destroyed social services in BC with her claims that basically every social worker was a racist until proven otherwise. I have many friends who are social workers – these people are literally saints with what they have to deal with. There were huge numbers of resignations . She is a disgusting fraud and a liar. I agree with the globe article. Pretendian is too cute. She committed fraud and should be charged with it.
