Everything old is new again:Grocery store item prices grew by 11.4% in September, rising at the fastest pace since 1981.

Given the amount of fiddling that stats canada has done with the inflation index, I’m not sure you can compare it to 1981’s number, and even if you could, it’s probably worse
I’m old enough to say that today’s worse…I don’t remember gas prices too also being that insane, comparatively. House owning or renting was not that super crazy either if memory recalls.
Come on … you don’t remember gasoline prices in the mid 1970’s going from 28 cents a gallon to 1.00 a gallon? More than a triple in about 4 or 5 years. Around 1972 to 1977.
I’m old but not that old, I was riding a bicycle in 72, had my first car in 78.
That was Turdeau Le 1St’s NEP in action. Borrowing Interest rates were in the 20% range as well.,
Did we learn anything?
Think of it as … “Emergency” dieting.
Yes … Bidinh has extended the STATE of Emergency for another 90 days. After all there’s another important election to cheat.
Most grocery stores are taking advantage of surrounding locals who cannot shop elsewhere. Loblaws selling bags of rice for $40 while the same bag at Costco is $18. Pretty much goes for everything else.
I guess it’s not surprising that in both high inflation years there was a Prime Minister Trudeau in power.
Both Trudeaus hated western Canada and implemented policies that harmed the west’s energy industry. Both Prime Minister Trudeaus cared more about cultural issues than economic issues. Both Trudeaus spent wildly and drove up debts and deficits. Both poured money from Canadian taxpayers preferentially into Quebec . Both Trudeau Prime Ministers used (willing) journalists as their personal public relations personnel and fan club organizers.
Same games, same plans, same clowns, same results.
Justin here:
I don’t see inflation as a real problem. After all I, all other Parliamentarians, and civil servants, got big raises in each of the last 3 years.
And I, your exalted Dear Leader, get to expense $8000 to $12,000 a month on food expenses. Of course when I fly all food and drink is charged to a separate budget.
So inflation isn’t really a problem.
Now bouncy castles, that’s a real problem.
Price of bananas went up to .89 from .79 / Kg at our local grocery store in one week alone.
Relax folks, the economy is just fine and it will continue to be just fine until the Democrats are wiped out in the mid-terms.
Then the real depressing economic ‘news’ will be out.
This is at the time of year that prices should be dropping with local produce and new crop ingredients coming in.
Input costs at the start of planting were very high compared to the previous year.
Harvest costs are up also due to higher fuel costs, namely diesel.
Seen the price of fertilizer and seed lately ?
It’s only going to get worse as people cut back so will the farmers in the amount of crops they plant.
Oh, also don’t forget that Canada’s most Favorite crony capitalist and price fixer is putting out releases about how No Name branded foods will not get any price increases until next January…
“Let them eat NoName Cake” seems to be the most common response to him.
No szoup for you.
Prices always go up under a Trudeau government. Those Trudeau’s are a curse. But Liberals love ’em.
The Trudeaus, because of voters in central and eastern Canada, have fuddle-duddled all Canadians once again.
And remember, the 11% is in just one month. If that rate continues, it is over 100% in a year.
But StatsCan continues to pretend that the yearly inflation rate is around 8%.
What do they leave out to arrive at that miniscule figure? Oh, yeah….housing, gas, and food. You know, the stuff real Canadians actually spend their money on. Apparently those items are “too volatile” to include when computing inflation rates. Our betters are so wise!
Oh boy….
the 11% stat is a rolling average comparing the CPI of September 2022 (174.8) with the CPI of September 2021 (158.5) of a carefully curated selection of groceries that had a value of 100 in 2002.
Now of course, statscan is doing a whole bunch of adjustments since 2002, so odds are you can’t have an apples to apples comparison once they make a change, and they’ve done a lot in the last 20 years.
Someone is very math challenged.

Hi Mom!!
So – everything is going as planned. Good.
Now start dicking with the fertilizer so you can really stick it to us.
I see the prick is threatening restrictions once more if we don’t smarten up with the vaxxes.
Dirtbag.
Food as a weapon.
How many commie thugs have done that trick before to subdue the restless natives.
And keep in mind that, under direct orders from the PMO, the Bank of Canada raised borrowing rates again this week because that will curb the inflationary cycle (may God keep my fingers from falling off as I type that political lie promulgated by Tiff “The Stiff” Macklem). They want as many of you dead in the shortest possible amount of time, by any means available. It is a WEF war against the citizenry being fronted by Trudeau, Singh and their cronies.
When was the interest rate increase this week???
The BOC meets next week on the 26th …. here is a list of the BOC meeting dates:
Wednesday, January 26*

Wednesday, April 13*
Wednesday, June 1
Wednesday, July 13*
Wednesday, September 7

No mention that Trudeau was printing money non-stop through the Covid “emergency”. Even a financial Neanderthal like me understands that as a recipe for rampant inflation.
Lol counterfeiting money IS INFLATION. I guess we can call it legal counterfeiting. Rich corporations, banks and billionaires get the money for free, while we pay for it.
Dippers blame the evil free marketers. Jughead Singh has no clue about cause and effect or how forcing pay raises exacerbates a bad situation.
In an isolated Inuit town a guy is commenting that a single Halloween pumpkin is $100.
Part of it is price gouging, something you can see when some companies announce declining revenues yet record profits, and part of it is the value of the Trudeau dollar. http://maguy69.m.a.pic.centerblog.net/3a40ddd4.jpg

Er, pumpkins are not traditional.
Yeppers. Cultural appropriation.
Good time to freeze prices – at their peak.
Somebody should tell Loblaws CEO Galen Weston.
