Vietnam wasn’t technically even a war…it was a police action. And when one side darts across a national border, attacks, then flees back across that border where the defenders *cannot legally follow*, that’s a problem. Very similar situation in Afghanistan.
The US has the most powerful army in the world, by far, but even they can only win a war if their civilian population will allow them to do whatever is necessary to win that war. For too long now they have been hobbled by rules and codes of conduct while their enemies are free to take whatever actions they wish. If you want to wage war, and WIN that war, give your army the task and then stand back and let them do it (don’t try to micromanage them).

1. Not all of Ukraine will be left a smoking ruin. Only those parts that Russia now occupies, about 20% of the country.
2. That’s still better than permanent occupation by Russia.
3. Europe can wean itself off of Russian petroleum, and in fairly short order. All it takes is political will.
4. Europe might now need Russian petroleum, but Russia also needs a market for its fuel. By far the best market for its natural gas is Europe.

The infrastructure isn’t there to ship it, and it will take a decade or two to overcome that. There’s one pipeline that’s just being finished, and it will not match the capacity of pipelines into Europe.
Russia is going to win if a significant majority of the population remains committed to the re-unification cause, which I think they will, although the point is debatable. They have the raw materials supply, energy supply, a population advantage, and military manufacturing capability which Ukraine does not. By winning I mean retaining what they territory they have now and incorporating it into Russia.
People who think Ukraine is winning because of recent advances in Kharkov Oblast are living in a fools paradise. Ukraine is bankrupt and losing men in the war at probably double the Russian/Donbassian side, maybe more. A recent WPost article interviewed the wounded in hospital in Odessa from the Ukrainian Kherson offensive. One of the fighters stated their losses were 5:1 against the Russian side. That’s not a sustainable strategy.
What Russia doesn’t have is military competence or a rational leader.
And now they want to inject 300,000 barely trained ill-equipped unmotivated troops in the middle of winter. What could possibly go wrong?
Similar strategy as Stalingrad. Keep pushing bodies out until the enemy runs out of ammunition. Anyone opposed would likely meet the same fate as they did back then.
At Stalingrad, the Russians were defending home turf and the Germans were ill prepared for winter.
The situation is now reversed, likely on both counts. NATO has initiated a program to send tons of winter military clothing, bedding, and so on.

As for predictions of doom and disaster…. I consider JP a very fine thinker, but I’m also aware that he is prone to depression and he is showing signs of it in this interview. Europe survived and rebuilt from a far worse situation in the late 1940s and 50s. Comparisons with the 1800s aren’t valid, because the knowledge and technology exist that they didn’t have then. Vietnam wasn’t technically even a war…it was a police action. And when one side darts across a national border, attacks, then flees back across that border where the defenders *cannot legally follow*, that’s a problem. Very similar situation in Afghanistan.
The US has the most powerful army in the world, by far, but even they can only win a war if their civilian population will allow them to do whatever is necessary to win that war. For too long now they have been hobbled by rules and codes of conduct while their enemies are free to take whatever actions they wish. If you want to wage war, and WIN that war, give your army the task and then stand back and let them do it (don’t try to micromanage them).

1. Not all of Ukraine will be left a smoking ruin. Only those parts that Russia now occupies, about 20% of the country.
2. That’s still better than permanent occupation by Russia.
3. Europe can wean itself off of Russian petroleum, and in fairly short order. All it takes is political will.
4. Europe might now need Russian petroleum, but Russia also needs a market for its fuel. By far the best market for its natural gas is Europe.

The infrastructure isn’t there to ship it, and it will take a decade or two to overcome that. There’s one pipeline that’s just being finished, and it will not match the capacity of pipelines into Europe.
Russia is going to win if a significant majority of the population remains committed to the re-unification cause, which I think they will, although the point is debatable. They have the raw materials supply, energy supply, a population advantage, and military manufacturing capability which Ukraine does not. By winning I mean retaining what they territory they have now and incorporating it into Russia.
People who think Ukraine is winning because of recent advances in Kharkov Oblast are living in a fools paradise. Ukraine is bankrupt and losing men in the war at probably double the Russian/Donbassian side, maybe more. A recent WPost article interviewed the wounded in hospital in Odessa from the Ukrainian Kherson offensive. One of the fighters stated their losses were 5:1 against the Russian side. That’s not a sustainable strategy.
What Russia doesn’t have is military competence or a rational leader.
And now they want to inject 300,000 barely trained ill-equipped unmotivated troops in the middle of winter. What could possibly go wrong?
