Germany is facing a complete collapse of its power grid this winter due to the soaring demand for electric heaters amid growing fears gas supplies could be cut off.

Germans are now panic buying electric heaters after firewood supplies and stoves sold out, a desperate backup option to survive the plummeting winter temperatures.

But according to the boss of the Stadtwerke Wiesbaden Netz utility company, Peter Lautz, the sheer amount of citizens using electric heaters would put enormous strain on the country’s electricity grid.

Electric heaters use between 1,000 and 3,000 watts of energy, so when all are plugged in simultaneously, it could cause a massive overload and cause the grid to collapse.

“If everyone switched on a fan heater at home, it would mean that we would have to almost double the existing network structure on every street,” said Lautz.

Germans have bought 600,000 electric heaters already in 2022, which is a 35 percent increase from usual numbers, and that figure is likely to rise as temperatures drop.

    I have a solution, plug your small heater into your electric car while is is charging and save the world while keeping warm. Win-Win.

    Brings to mind what a vet once told me about Germans – very mechanically inclined and smart as whips but their gullibility was second to none. Which might account for their current problems.

  9. There is nothing LESS efficient than an electric space heater. Nothing. Demonizing fossil fuels has consequences. Let the entire “eco”-State of Germany SUFFER. And SUFFER HARD… real HARD

    1. Actually like a incandescent lightbulb, a heater is near 100% efficient. Heat and visible light spectrum.

      Pro tip if cold and broke. Heating pad under the covers. Very low watt usage. 70-100 watts/hour. So maybe 60-80 cents over 8 hours.

    2. That’s got to be the dumbest thing I’ve read today. An electric heater can be 100% efficient, every watt consumed gets turned into heat.

      1. The electric heater is efficient on its own. Likewise the incandescent bulb is efficient 8/12 months in Canada.
        Problems are conversion in electric power generation and transmission. You won’t get 40% efficiency on natural gas electric generation (similar to coal). Line loss is going to cost you too. So you have 35% or less efficiency on converting natural gas to heat via electric heater. Your typical natural gas furnace is going to be +90% efficient.
        That is why we have home furnaces and not electric heat in our homes.
        People using electric heaters in place of natural gas furnaces will exasperate fuel shortages (more efficient to distribute natural gas to homes than the convert in power plants and transmit to homes).

        1. Combined cycle will get you to 60% efficiency at the power generator, but your point still stands

      In WA state the governor and many cities are pushing for NO-more NG to heat or cook in all new homes.

      It guess they have no idea the amount of BTU’s gas makes compared to electric

    1. Trouble is that will only take you so far in a SHTF scenario.
      Unless you own a wellhead with a jackpump sucking preferably NG out of the ground or oil with a crude refinery located nearby, you will be living the life of our great ancestors of yore.
      Needless to say, you will also need an army to defend that resource.

  14. I remember watching a NATO summit where Pres Trump was telling the Germans that they were putting themselves in a very risky geo-strategic position by exclusively using Russian gas and oil. The camera panned to the German delegation and they all were looking at Trump like he was a moron. Schadenfreude b!atches. I’m wondering if the countries that helped perpetrate the 2020 election steal (there was support from a number NATO allies’–intelligence services to hide the facts) are now contemplating how they’re going to keep their families warm and fed this winter and how to keep their respective populace from hunting them down and hanging them from lamp posts?
