August 7, 2022: Reader Tips

On a recent round-trip journey from Nashville to Chicago, a friend mentioned the Mason-Dixon Line. As a Canadian, this was not a top-of-mind term for me so I did some research to learn more about it. Here’s a song by Waylon Jennings called Mason-Dixon Lines.

Thinking back to my childhood, I’m not so sure there are any songs about the historical oddity that is Point Roberts, Washington!

Your best geographic or other tips are much appreciated!

Bonus: Look at this incredible video of Chicago, captured last month.

  1. As I was doing my regular Saturday morning dusting and hoovering, I was listening to SiriusXM. The program The Saturday Show opened with this piece by one of my favourite 20th century American composers, Aaron Copland:

Here’s the film for which he wrote it:

What’s notable about this was that it featured a young William Holden, who had just started in movies a few years before. It would be about a decade later before he made his mark in flicks such as Sunset Boulevard and Stalag 17.

    1. Thornton Wilder’s play was adapted for television a number of times. Apparently, there was one presentation in the 1950s with Paul Newman. According to IMDB, he’s in this one in the role of the stage manager (similar to the Chorus in Henry V):

Earlier, this one was on NBC:

The cast includes Hal Holbrook as the stage manager and Barbara Bel Geddes (perhaps best-known for her role as the Ewing matriarch in Dallas) as the mother of one of the characters.

      1. BA- Great musical tip. Copland’s influence ran deep in the background score of the TV series “China Beach.” Come Christmas, the absolute best version of “The First Noel” you will ever hear is the (Mormon) Tabernacle Choir’s piece. It has Aaron Copland written all over it, especially the violins.

      1. You bless a Republican.
        You mention God.
        You care about white people.

You trying to get yourself cancelled?
You’re just lucky that Canada doesn’t have helicopters, black or otherwise.
You’ll never work for the CBC.
        Or any University.
        Lucky fellow.

    1. I read an anecdote, many years ago, about a reformed cannibal who ended up in England during WW I and was taken to France to view the battlefields. He surveyed the scene, with the dead lying in “no man’s land”, and asked “Will you eat them?”. The horrified British officers sputtered, “Of course not!!!”. The cannibal responded, “What a waste.”.
It’s probably apocryphal, but it has a lot of truth.

        1. Ian – I’d forgotten that particular classic. But, no, the anecdote I read many years ago had no relation to that great song. It was supposedly true.

    2. Q: How do you solve homelessness and hunger?
A: Let the hungry eat the homeless.

    3. So how would this work? Would you just cull from more densely populated countries like China or the UK? What about CO2 emissions during transport? Do you get carbon credits for eating humans? Can the US just pick up some irregular border crossers and call it a day? So many details left out of the discussion…

  2. “Point Roberts, Washington” – I started reading it out of curiosity, but a buncha’ stuff sounded like yesterday. Many, many yesterdays in fact. So I scrolled back up to the top to see when the article was written – 2012. Most shocking tho’, look at the picture – AND THE GAS PRICES!!!!!!

    – Gotta’ go – going to go and cry myself to sleep…

    1. Point Roberts would be destitute were it not for the Canadians who cross the border to shop there. wonder if the ArriveCan app is having any effect.

      1. No, Sandy Hook cost him the millions, this falls under the category “priceless”

  3. More Libtard gun laws will stop this!
    ———————————————————————
MONTREAL — Quebec police say the gun used to kill three people in the Montreal area this week was acquired illegally.
Provincial police spokeswoman Geneviève Gagnon says 26-year-old Abdulla Shaikh, who is suspected of killing the three men at random, did not have a firearms license.

    1. Justin Trudeau: the only people who need guns are criminals, that’s why we’re reducing prison terms for people who use guns in their work.

      1. The Trudeau regime is consciously and actively working against the best interests of the majority. That most people can’t even see it is depressing.

        1. I’m surprised that nobody has figured out that Trudeau is an American CIA plant.

That’s why he he is saving all the oil, minerals and water for future USA use.

Add in a little degrading of the Armed Forces into almost non-existence, remove guns, debt beyond repayment, destroy the economy, divide the country, and cause loss of basic necessities including food.

          Then stroll in.

Of course this also works for China, Russia, Portugal, Denmark, Podunk USA police department……….

I just love that Liberals don’t seem to realize their very existence depends on the Americans.

Canada is unarmed and led by low sagacity paedamorphic ideologues.

        2. But, Dear Leader promises lots of FREE STUFF! He will deliver; one of these days. Maybe after next election. Just have to keep the faith.

  4. L – Lots of stuff going on, funny no one mentioned China blockading silica(sand) shipments
from Australia to Taiwan. Kind of important given, what silicon chips are made of.
Geo-political instability originating in the witches/warlocks of the Biden Administration,
without end… No sober second thought. Also, Ukraine war document leak…

  5. They got the wrong guy!

James Franco to portray late Cuban leader Fidel Castro in Aline of Cuba for filmmaker Miguel Bardem.

  6. The video of Chicago reminded me of the long weekend my husband I spent there in 2016. Our tour guide on the Chicago Architecture River Cruise was retired military and very informative. On a crowded train to (then) U.S. Cellular Field to watch the Sox and Jays, an old, crazy black woman kept mumbling that my husband was assaulting her. Everyone just looked at one another and kind of chuckled. The highlight of the weekend was dinner here:

Alas, being pure bloods, it may be some time before we get state-side again. The bucket list awaits.

  7. Two questions
Anyone see anything on pierre poilievre traveling to Manitoba from Saskatchewan and saying where the real farmers are. Insulting Saskatchewan farmers or is this a fake news rumor.
2nd question when did environment canada change to environment and climate change canada.
    Thanks

    1. Boy, if you bite that quickly, you’re really gonna be busy once the Media cranks up it’s “Pierre is to the extreme right of the most rightest right you’ve ever seen” campaign.

Children and puppies and YOU are not safe.

If you don’t believe it now, you will.

It’s a Canadian tradition dating well back before the Liberal Party gave your money to wealthy people to buy what they already owned.

    2. TurdHole changed it right after he was elected PM and put Climate Barbie in charge.

I refer to it as Environment and Tossing Virgins into Volcanoes Canada. Makes more sense that way.

  8. Some things are not what they seem.

    https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/montreal-pride-parade-cancelled-1.6544108

Pride Parade in Montreal canceled on the morning it was set to start, as organizers and police sight “lack of security”. Ah, no. Security is something you arrange way in advance. Something else is up. My bet is not enough police would agree to help out given the state of Monkeypox in that province (i.e., crowd control and possibly touching people).

  9. Democrats vote to institutionalize American poverty by doubling down on inflation.

    The revolution inches closer.

  10. Read it and weep for the return of the Dark Ages.

“The proponents of the systemic racism hypotheses are making a large bet with potentially lethal consequences. In accordance with the idea that racism causes racial health disparities, they are changing the direction of medical research, the composition of medical faculty, the curriculum of medical schools, the criteria for hiring researchers and for publishing research, and the standards for assessing professional excellence. They are substituting training in political advocacy for training in basic science. They are taking doctors out of the classroom, clinic, and lab and parking them in front of antiracism lecturers. Their preferential policies discourage individuals from pariah groups from going into medicine, regardless of their scientific potential. They have shifted billions of dollars from the investigation of pathophysiology to the production of tracts on microaggressions.”
