The Cree emigrated to the area now known as Saskatchewan in the mid-1700s. The Assiniboine and Saulteaux emigrated later. These peoples were brought to this land by the fur traders (Hudson Bay Company and the Northwest Company). Prior to that economic emigration, the Saskatchewan region sat at the boundary of the Gros Ventre and Blackfoot people. The people followed the buffalo herds. In winter time, the herds went south to warmer climes. Later, the same could be said of free range cattle herds.
The trading companies equipped the Cree, Assiniboine and Saulteaux so they could fight the Gros Ventre and Blackfoot for the economic use of the Saskatchewan territory.
Elderly Assiniboine have stated they arrived here, ~50 years before the settlers. It is all oral history. The Cree, Assiniboine and Saulteaux were allies of the French during the French English wars in the mid-1700s. The French lost and went west to push out the people living there. They brought the Cree, Assiniboine and Saulteaux with them. They armed them and let nature take it’s course.
