Last night, there was a small discussion of Chuck Norris movies. Well, I’ve got a CN double feature, two flicks from early in his career.
First, The Octagon:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AM6fWwwgiRo
It’s a predictable martial arts film. The cast includes Lee van Cleef, Canadian actor Art Hindle, and Karen Carlson, perhaps best known for her role as the wife of Robert Redford’s character in The Candidate.
Next is Good Guys Wear Black:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGhG967m4R0
In the cast are James Franciscus, Anne Archer, and Dana Andrews in one of his last movie roles. (Ironically, Andrews plays an alcoholic, which, sadly, he was in real life.) Ted Post directed this one. Earlier he directed Clint Eastwood in Hang ‘Em High and Magnum Force.
I thought GGWB was better than TO. If nothing else, he gets to drive Porche 911 Carreras.
On my round tuit list are all 3 of CN’s Missing in Action movies.
BTW, the Laurel & Hardy movie is also on my round tuit list. It’s been years since I last saw one of their films.
Strangely enough, just this evening I made reference to a Laurel and Hardy movie.
I was emptying the dish washer when the cutlery rack slid out and hit me on the head; I jumped up “F**K” and hit my head on an open dish cabinet door, which caused me to bring my hands to my head “OW”, causing some plastic dishes and cups balanced on the counter to spew onto the kitchen floor. “B*GGER” as I move to try to stop them, forgetting the open dishwasher door. “F**K”.
Someone came in to enquire as to what was happening “I feel like a Laurel and Hardy movie” I said, sprawled on the floor.
Not everyone can do that.
LOL, thanks for sharing that little slice of the ‘human condition’, Robert. As I used to tell my daughters when things they tried went ‘sideways’ on them… Welcome to the human race!
Recent history has taught us that real life is far more bizarre than any Hollywood script could ever imagine. Just 10 yrs ago, any writer offering up a President Joe Biden/VP Kamala Harris/son Hunter Biden script would have been laughed off the lot.
unrehearsed too. very good.
when l was a kid my crop got me nicknamed laurel, it literally stood up.
My mother told me once that Laurel & Hardy were also popular in Germany, and were known as “Dick und Doof” (Fat and Stupid).
Laurel and Hardy were probably the best comedy duo of all time. What was even more remarkable was that their friendship lasted for more than 30 years. This from 1931 was one of their best: “The Music Box”.

What these movies reminded me was that their producer and promoter Hal Roach was an absolute piece of shit.

Colonialista:
I just finished watching Invasion U. S. A.. It’s a cheesy blood-and-thunder movie, the kind my father and I used to stay up late on a Friday or Saturday night when something like that was shown on TV. Usually, the next morning, my mother would ask how it was, and we’d grunt something like “OK”, wondering why we bothered.
Yeah, but the film is more (or less) than that. What always gets me is the effort to result ratio. Yes, the plot could have been written by not especially talented high school drama club. Yes, the range of emotions and acting skills is under about 5*Steven Seagal (1 Steven Seagal being the basic acting unit), with the highest mark going to the guy who has his hand nailed to the desk. Yes, the main villain could have been replaced by a sloppily carved brick and none would notice. And yet, the production costs were high. It was a big budget film with large sets and an army of extras (none bothering to use gun sights). Georgia National Guard made their tanks, APCs and helicopters available. They were really trying to make an epic action film and ended up with something that compares unfavorably to some low budget, no second takes films, where actors are paid with beer.
I like the old cheesy Cannon films– in the sense that they were so bad they’re good. Invasion USA was one of those. I really like Delta Force 2.
The Cannon films were, of course, of lesser quality. Often, they were made with smaller budgets and casts of unknowns, with a few big names thrown in for marketing purposes or because those actors needed a paycheque.
The plots were often controversial, due to the content or ideological slant, which might explain why those films weren’t made by larger studios. Nobody else wanted to touch them.
Cannon wasn’t the first company to produce movies like that. For years, American International made and/or distributed schlock (can everyone say “Roger Corman”?), though, once in a while, it had a winner, such as the original Mad Max. Even earlier, there were studios like Allied Artists (formerly Monogram), that were, to borrow a phrase often used by Eddie Muller (host of TCM’s Noir Alley) poverty row outfits.
Cannon eventually fizzled out and, from what I understand, is now part of MGM. Apparently, though, the name’s been revived, but I haven’t heard much about that.
Electric vehicles may or may not be a fraud. Their economic basis is certainly dubious.
The Professional Racing of Electric Vehicles looks very much like a fraud, and also economically dubious…
“The promoter of the cancelled electric car race around East False Creek (Vancouver) says he cannot say when ticket holders will receive refunds. “Of course, those people will get their money.” ”
“Carter would not explain why a contract would bind him from publicly discussing refunds. He denied there is a cashflow issue or that his company is in arrears with creditors.”
“The (June 30-July 2nd) three-day festival was also supposed to include a celebrity electric car race, electric vehicle test drives, a concert by Nickelback and a business conference headlined by environmental activist and consumer advocate Erin Brockovich and former Mexican president Felipe Calderon.”
Fools and their money….

Electric car races?
Is that racing golf carts?
Sewing machines.
no no no. you dont remember slot cars and the plastic tracks with 2 metal rails?
pfft. all youse bloggers dont know whut we’re all missing.

Of course I remember them. I used to have a slot car set. During the late 1960s, they were considered an alternative to electric trains.

Here is an interesting piece by conservative writer Caitlin Johnstone. She advocates non-violent civil disobedience by alienated working people to protest the increased authoritarianism by our ruling elites:
https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/johnstone-our-entire-civilization-structured-around-keeping-us-realizing-we-can-do
My own politics are moderate-conservative, but I am a radical conservative as to advocating militancy against the corrupt, elitist Trudeau government.
Before we get to the stage where Canada gets to what Ms. Johnstone advocates, small-c conservatives need better leadership and organizations. Two cases in point: Tamara Lich is still in jail given our corrupt justice system. Yet there has not been any organized groundswell of tangible support for her. Second, this past weekend there was an organized farmers’ protest in Ottawa, yet our poorly-led conservative groups failed to support this worthy cause.
Conservative protests must also be done in the streets, using non-violent disobedience. The Freedom Convoy taught us this. So conservatives must organize to make street protests more effective.

Git the bible thumpers out of politics, and you will only have left real conservatives. It says in the bible, “you can not serve 2 masters”, so either bible thumper OR conservative. The 2 are NOT compatible!
precisely. PRECISELY. ye gawds all we need is a western civilization morphing into another goddamn theocracy based on a book PACKED with absurdities and contradiction.
l am a firm believer in a Creator, but afaic, NO ONE has got it ‘right’ so far.
So do you feel the same for other religious institutions or just Christianity?
This is just an observation, not an endorsement, but peaceful protests will get you nothing.
You’re not dealing with rational people. You are dealing with fascists and fanatics
In the history of the world, there has been only one method of dealing with such people that has proven effective.
https://youtu.be/kuuTD-B2VDA
Canadians, given a s#@t sandwich will ask for seconds.
Violent protest will get you all declared terrorists, a massive govt. crackdown, social media companies purging everything that is even vaguely right of centre and the media will pump out wall to wall hysteria to make sure it all happens.
You can see what is happening with Jan 6th stuff in the US.
The left can be openly violent, the right can’t. You have to do something else or you’re just making it worse.
See the last line of my previous post
Those farmer and truckers are the conservative protesters your talking about.
Did I miss this mass shooting in the USA – from July 19, 2022. Afterall there have been over 300 so far.
https://www.cnn.com/2022/07/19/us/indiana-mall-shooter-weapons/
Indiana shooter kills 3 people in 15 seconds using an AR-15 before being shot dead by a bystander who was legally armed and engaged the shooter with a hand gun while motioning to people to stand back.
The good guy got him from 40 yards with a .22 handgun. Damned fine shooting.
When asked about his trainig, he said his grandpa taught him how to shoot.
*
You’re confusing .22 rimfire with a Glock 22.
“By far the most popular police service pistol in the United States,
the GLOCK 22 fires the potent 40 S&W cartridge and holds more
rounds for its size and weight than most other full-sized handgun
in its class.”

No one carries a .22 for self defense.

“When did it become okay for Americas to live like mere Europeans/’Canadians’, to settle, to compromise, to not expect that tomorrow will be better than today? Coincidence? Or Corruption?
Canadians need to understand what’s really happening within our country’s political system.
Let’s take a look at an article from The Globe and Mail from June 6th, 2017. This article leads to some very stunning conclusions.

Former Conservative PM, Brian Mulroney, made a very interesting speech at a conference for Canada 2020. He clearly states that the cooperation between the Liberals and the Conservatives and the continuity of their efforts has led Canada to the place it’s in today.

Gives a whole new meaning to the “school shooting” meme
https://youtube.com/shorts/4z2uTP3rNxE?feature=share
Edmonton is suffering excited delirium over a visit from Mr Pope. It’s anticipated he will offer an apology on behalf of the organization he works for to people who went to schools his company ran.
Some of the people who went to these schools went on to obtain multiple university degrees. Witness the guy at the front of the line – chief Willy Littlechild. Three degrees from the UA. He’s a lawyer, former MP and now wants Mr Pope to apologize for his education.
Yes, there was coporal punishment in the education system at the time. I was flogged on more than one occasion by various teachers in my trip through the primary school system. I remember the quarterback of the football team (grade 9) getting the strap from the principal (who was a WW11 vet) who didn’t put up with any shit.
Mr Pope has already apologized but an apology from Europe is not sufficient. I get it. Kids were taken from their parents and sent to school sometimes hundreds of miles from home. Many were away for months and even years at a time. It was a bad thing. An apology from a guy who wasn’t there at the time to the descendants of students is largely meaningless especially given the fact that he has already said sorry. I can’t imagine anything will be accomplished by this effort. It will be as meaningless as a trudeau apology.
I think they will attempt to turn the apology into money — some sort of reparations. Hopefully the Pope is required to complete the ArriveCan protocol.
Samanta Bee, dim-wit host of Full Frontal is canceled.
https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/samantha-bee-canceled-full-frontal-1235324772/
“Full Frontal presaged a new parade of weekly late-night humor shows that aimed at smaller niches rather than a broader crowd.”
Translation: nobody watched it.
“We do a show to please ourselves,” Bee told Variety during an interview in 2016. “This gives us an opportunity to say the things we want in the exact way we want to say them.”
Translation: she didn’t care that nobody watched it.
Woke is expensive. Must be a recession coming.

A message for the Conservative Party.
“Protestations from reporters at liberal outlets also prompted DeSantis’ Press Secretary Christina Pushaw to note on social media that the “invite only” move was aimed at media who “shamelessly act like Democrat activists, then cry when they’re treated as such.”
“It has come to my attention that some liberal media activists are mad because they aren’t allowed into the Sunshine Summit this weekend,” Pushaw said on Twitter. “My message to them is to try crying about it. Then go to kickboxing and have a margarita. And write the same hit piece you were gonna write anyway.”

I watched both The Flying Deuces and The Music Box.
One thing I’ve noticed about that style of humour is that the gags are often predictable, but they’re still funny when and how they happen. (You didn’t honestly believe the piano was ever going to stay put once Stan and Ollie got it to the top of the stairs, did you?)
Another reason for watching these movies is to see who’s in the cast. For example, the officer in TFD who gets hit in the face with wet laundry is played by Jean Del Val. Fans of the movie Casablanca will recognize him as the police officer who, right after the film starts, broadcasts the bulletin about the murdered German couriers shortly.
Then there’s the army post commandant, played by Charles Middleton. He’s perhaps best known for his role as Emperor Ming the Merciless in the Flash Gordon serials.
As for what happened to Laurel & Hardy, situations like they experienced with Hal Roach was one reason the old studio system eventually collapsed. (That began when Olivia de Havilland had a contract dispute with Warner Brothers and won.)

The City said it doesn’t know the source of a smell emanating from the southeast corner of Calgary. Residents in New Brighton and Copperfield said they’re spending more time indoors on account of the “sour” and “rotting” smell. Shepard landfill does not appear to be the cause.
