Canada and the U.S. should leave NATO and focus instead on the defence of North America, particularly the Arctic. Ask military-age male Canadians if they would be willing to go to Europe to fight and die to protect it. I would guess that at least 75% would not, and that is the right answer given the governing philosophies of Canada and the EU.
We already have fought two wars for Europe, and various other engagements.
