  9. I think this is wrong move. The word “Confederation” establishes a principal that our country was built on. It means something. It conjures up a sense of unity among the provinces. By contrast, the native word means nothing to the majority of Canadians and seems somewhat unpronouncable. If it is important to name things to reflect native heritage, so not do do in a way that undermines our country and sense of unity.

  47. There is nothing wrong with recognizing indigenous culture through naming structures, locations etc with indigenous names . There are ample opportunities to do this. But neither does recognizing indigenous culture mean subjugating our own culturally significant naming traditions and renaming things which are already named. The Confederation Bridge was a huge structure, a technical engineering victory named because it is a another link tying the island to the mainland and representing another step in our confederation. That is a significant thing! Considerable time and thought went into choosing the name. Randomly changing it now to pacify the current political purpose will only create animosity. There is nothing offensive about the term confederation and no one can claim there is as has been done in the destruction of many statues and structures named after individuals now deemed offensive to the indigenous culture. Serving the needs of all of our population does not require taking from one culture to serve another. There is ample for all and many opportunities to name new significant structures to recognize indigenous culture. Lets do that instead of playing wedge politics and division. It mocks the term confederation, it smacks of pandering and political correctness and it does nothing to build our country.
