If You Build It, They Will Come

Stuffing people who need drug or mental-health treatment into free or low-cost housing has proved disastrous.

The horrors of [single-room occupancy hotels] were put on display to the public in a recent San Francisco Chronicle feature. The story tells of people living in buildings with collapsing ceilings, toxic mold, vermin, noxious odors, constant noise, broken appliances, and unchecked violence. It also notes that at least 166 people fatally overdosed in these hotels in 2020 and 2021. This official number, however, is suspicious for being so low. San Francisco’s medical examiner reported at least 1,300 overdose deaths citywide in the last two years, most commonly for illicit fentanyl combined with other drugs.

How can the places that the city has deemed appropriate for the economically distressed be so bad? It’s not because of a lack of funds. San Francisco has an eye-popping $1.1 billion homeless budget, much of it spent on such supportive housing.

    1. of course, the room is anywhere from 45 to 60 dollars per night, but they are spending $135 per “client”

no one will audit those programs to see where the money goes

  1. Robert,

    “Doing well by doing good.”

I am old enough to remember how the 300,000 Homeless Nationwide was a condemnation of President Ronald Reagan. The Democrats were going to make it all better. How have the California Democrats improved the homeless situation? They sure have expanded it. How many do Frisco and LA have now? 300,000 a piece? They now have how many more dying in the streets every year. 1,300 in Frisco. How many more in LA?

I guess we need to throw even more money at the problems. I need to figure out how to catch some of that money?

    1. I just don’t care about the drugged out garbage in society. There were choices made that took those walking dead to where they are.

You can’t talk them out of their chosen life-style, so why not stop supporting it and see what happens. I think a lot of it will go away on it’s own.

These folks are a part of the useless eaters population that is growing rapidly and it is the population that the Davos boys want to cull … then on to the less garbage losers who are unemployable.

This is happening. Ask big pharma.

  2. “San Francisco has an eye-popping $1.1 billion homeless budget”

Riches flowing to the homeless propagates homelessness. Why would anyone even try to house the homeless in San Francisco, one of the most expensive cities in the US. San Francisco should put their money into shelters in Oakland and provide a bus service.

At one time Alberta Social Services used to council welfare claimants to move to Vancouver and give them a bus ticket. That was in the days when people actually wanted to move to Vancouver, back when it was still part of Canada.

  3. I watched a leftist economist from the thoroughly left wing Centre for Policy Alternatives on the mostly leftist BNN yesterday promoting the policy of government providing low cost housing in Canada essentially replicating the “projects” from LBJ’s Great Society. Typical Groundhog Day, forgotten history, mush.

  4. Ha. Cali Libs get owned by polticians, consultants and drug addicts with mental health issues. Again.

(Not saying any of the above mentioned groups don’t overlap in a Venn)

  5. Our Progressive Comrades show amazing stamina.Their inability to learn from history, even their own short history is astonishing.
Doing the same thing, over and over again, commanding that “Different Results must occur..”
And willing to kill. Each and everyone who tells them they are deluded and that their delusions of adequacy create nought but waste and destruction in the real world..
    Silence ! I kill you!.
    Nails it.
“Helping” another human to destroy themselves is not help.
    Enabling an alcoholic is destructive.
And encouraging the behaviours that have created these ever growing populations of “Homeless” has done nothing to help anyone..
Well except the “Helper” who are grown fat on the misery of the afflicted.

Maybe the government declaration of war, upon the family unit and informed citizens..is actually enlightened support for both.
For The War ON…,drugs, communism ,poverty and homelessness have all produced more of each.
So warring against civilization,by our parasitic overload, should result in a more civilized society.

Which of course it will, once we get through culling the parasitic hordes..
Another “learning moment” Death to all do-gooders.
For their “Good Intentions” created endless living hells, for those they impose their “help” on.

  6. In San Francisco …. 5,621 individuals living in tents during encampment sweeps between June 2020 and October 2021.

… San Francisco has an eye-popping $1.1 billion homeless budget …

    1.1 billion / 5621 = 195,694.716

Somebody somewhere lives well helping the homeless.
Apparently, it’s a good business to be in if you can get piece of the action.
Wonder how things would work if they just gave the money to the homeless and eliminated the competing bureaucrats.
Not that would be solution to anything, just an experiment.

  7. Catering to addicts has become a cottage industry for liberals who have no real life job skills, they love them some advocacy but do absolutely nothing to aid those who’s lives they ruin via aiding those addicted to drugs. Keeping addicts addicts is a wise career move for liberals, who else is going to hire them to destroy the lives of those already living in the gutter of society.

  8. Nothing parties like a rental.

And if there’s no investment, you’re not paying for it, there’s no damage deposit at all… Welcome to the socialist utopia.

  9. When I was a young lad my Grandfather worked at the local Ontario Hospital ( home for drunks, druggies and mentally ill.) They were housed, fed and taken care. Free tobacco & sweets.
Some decade later a bunch of Liberal assholes declared their rights were violated and the hospital was cleared out. A large portion of them didn’t want to leave as they were smart enough to realize
what a good thing they had going.
You can now see the result of that decision.

    1. “One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest” by Ken Kesey. Good intentions, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Nurse Ratched cleared them all out.

  10. Follow the money. Look at who owns those buildings, who gets the government rent cheque.

I’ll bet it’s the same politicians who keep clamoring for more money.

    1. Clearly this is a real estate scam writ large. City buys a building, the whole neighborhood loses value, then the operators of political blind trusts grab the choice parts of the devalued neighborhood. At some point it is decided that the program has failed, the city sells their building and pays to clean up the mess, then the neighborhood rapidly rises in value again. Blind trusts make obscene money, politicians become millionaires.

      Rinse, repeat.

      1. They do not buy the building. They pay exorbitant rents to connected hotel owners who probably could not rent these rooms to anyone else.

In the 1990s they were paying $2000/month for these SRO rooms. The SF Chronicle also reported on a six figure petty cash fund that has no records of where money went.

Real liberals would be horrified by this misuse of the poor. Somewhere a real liberal must exist.

  11. The problem like much else in our society is created by a plethora of “non profit” parasite agencies leeching off the taxpayers and encouraged by politicians of all stripes. Non-profit does not imply inexpensive or thriftiness their employees live extremely well forever more, the gravy train continues, the problem expands, budgets are increased.
I have lived long enough to see the situation in Vancouver’s downtown east side deteriorate disastrously, until the problem has spread into nearby Chinatown, downtown and into the westside. People sleeping in store entrances all over, harassing shoppers and multiple break-ins. Similar to San Fran this area has returned NDP politicians forever, they live very well. The politicians latest hobby horse is a free clean drug supply-yeah that will help.

  12. The homeless junkies, just like the Moslems, BLM, Antifa, and other assorted criminals are just another example of the left’s hatchetmen.

  13. The woke city council of Victoria, along with the provincial government, has done the same thing with exactly the same results. Most of these addicts/mentally ill/habitual criminals need to be in some kind of confinement. Until we accept that things will never change, except for the worse.

  14. I’m thinking about bringing a truckload of ner do wells to the cottage this summer and broadcasting the antics.
    Should be cool.

  15. The mentally ill live tormented lives no matter their living circumstances.
They lived tormented lives in the former provincial psych hospitals.
They live tormented lives living on the streets and in flop houses.
At least in the psych hospitals they were safe from attack, had a warm clean bed and got three meals a day.
