You really are off into the farthest corners of la la land.
Globe and Mail- What a tangled Web the Trudeau government is weaving
It was such a lovely idea, the internet. A borderless, bodiless refuge for free expression, beyond the censor’s reach; a place of infinite capacity and zero cost, where anyone who wanted to express themselves could, in whatever medium, at whatever scale; where a book or a song or a film could be distributed with equal ease, to one person or billions; where artists had the world for an audience, and audiences could choose from among all the world’s creators. Who wouldn’t want such a thing?
Governments, that’s who. The Trudeau government, in particular, seems to see the internet not as an opportunity, a chance to stand down the immense regulatory army that has hitherto stood watch over the Canadian media, but as a challenge.

Andrew occasionally attacks the Liberals. But it never lasts long and he always goes back to the fold. I just don’t read what he writes or listen to him anymore at all.
I think that was the point Francisco was trying to make with his headline. Akin to “if you lost Walter Cronkite, You’ve lost America.
Andy is one of them, but if even Andy is speaking out, then the government has a wee bit of a problem.
The headline should read, “Blind Squirrel finds nut”
Indiana Jane, absolutely terrific!!
Couldn’t be more accurate. Wins the thread for sure.
Post of the day!
What Jane said
Nut found at time furthest from when found nuts matters.
Why internet censorship doesn’t matter at all.
1) I don’t need any one else to tell me the government is full of self-serving dipshits. I already know this. It is the default position to take on all matters of governance. Less government is better for the individual. Anything that comes out of their mouths is to serve them and constrain me. When there’s no possibility of a contrarian view, opinion or analysis it can all be dismissed out of hand.
2) I know you beautiful bastards are out there, you’ve known and been yelling that they “don’t speak for me” as long as I have by our own independent observation of their actions and their results. I am not molded by the agitprop and apparatchiks because their lies don’t match up to reality.
3) They people the haven’t figured it out are never going to. There’s no sense in wasting the time or effort in stopping the people willfully loading themselves into the cattle cars. And most likely, they’ll sell you out first. STASI informants, 100 Flowers Campaign; it’s best when the dissidents to ID themselves.
4) Shaking down Google and Facebook to pay the subsidies to Canadian media that the tax payer is currently forced to is A-OK by me. Rock on with that, either outcome is better than the current situation.
“…Shaking down Google and Facebook to pay the subsidies to Canadian media that the tax payer is currently forced to is A-OK by me …”
Do you mean you think that if the government can get subsidize the Canadian media by forcing Google and Facebook to pay them, the government will stop bribing the media directly with funds from taxes?
Good one. And nut, certainly not nuts.
Not quite as evocative as said squirrel but I always liked “a broken clock is right twice a day”. In Andrew’s case, a cuckoo clock.
the link was dead. The Po Faced Yob was prbably shilling us as usual..”look at me Justine”.. I’m showing the peons that I really care for their troubles, but I don’t really!.. See you later.
I would have gone with “blind pig finds acorn” but the sentiment is well received. ~:D
Brilliant!
The WEF government has no problem, with the Turd, Ham Hocks, and Jagmeet the terrorist protector installed.
Or more likely, he has a ghost writer that he employs on occasion, that attempts to give Justin’s cousin a little cred.
Ditto — I stopped reading Coyne some time ago.
Coyne lost me when he actively campaigned against PM Harper by writing terrible articles about him in the National Compost (so-called conservative) newspaper, leading up to the 2015 election. He knew that these writings would contribute to the SpawnChild we now have in Ottawa to win that election.
Yes, I know that many readers here didn’t like PM Harper but let’s be real, what we have now is completely destroying our Canada and along with every other liberal, Justine doesn’t give a flying leap and neither does Andrew Coyne. They only care about themselves and their own gravy.
And now Coyne has the chutzpah to argue against his own chosen candidate? The irony is too much.
What an arrogant elite.
Well said, Bruce.
Trust fund baby says what now? Like Bruce said – Coyne hammers out the occasional anti Liberal piece but he’ll be back to his ol’ self before too long, like how Pollievre is dangerous to Canadian democracy blah, blah blah and other such deep insights that only a Laurentian elitist can provide.
He votes Green Party which tells you all you need to about where his head’s at.
burton, I’d just offer this small point that Coyne isn’t quite an Laurentian elitist,,, but rather a “Laurentian elitist wanna be”
Coyne has consistently advocated for far left politicians, the Liberals, the NDP , the Greens, Coyne has thrown his support behind every one of those far left organizations … he always chastises the Con Party for not being conservative enough and therefore unworthy of Coynes approval or advocacy… a “conservative” that votes and advocates for the far left isn’t a conservative at all, just a bullshit artist.
The Turdhole/NDP Dicktatorship has been smart enough to stay away from the things that really upset far left voting conservatives like Coyne, no $16.00 orange juices. According to Coyne, 16 dollar orange juice ordering is the real threat to our democratic institutions… invoking the War Measures Act over a protest, not so much.
The Wokesters will be calling for his head. Along with that of the editor who allowed such heresy to be published in the Grope & Flail.
Agree with comments, above.
The tone of the article is probably a negotiation tactic for the next round of government payola.
Canada’s corporate ‘journalists’ are now little more than high-priced whores.
Just because the likes of Coyne write a critical column, doesn’t mean he doesn’t like the idea.
Just needs a bit of plausible deniability for future reference.
Andrew knows censorship will never apply to him and his ilk.
Regardless of how I feel about Andrew Coyne he is aware of the dangers of state-controlled media to society and democratic government and is openly stating it in a major national publication. Kudos for that. Justin Trudeau is following the same path with regards to media as every other despot ever has and while I doubt most Canadians understand the implications of that, or in all likelihood support it, it has to be put out there for everyone to see and be warned of. I thank Coyne for having the courage to do that irregardless of the probability that he won’t write anything I agree with for the rest of the year. I hope someone preserves this column as it stands a good chance of getting memory holed.
Arty – you nailed it. The message is that government regulation of the internet is a cash grab and an affront to our freedom of choice and expression. We need to do something or else the Liberals will send SDA down the memory hole. Even if Elon Musk provides signals from his web free America satellite, the Canadian government will jam his signals to enforce the law. Margaret Atwood must be giggling with delight.
he, and those he works for still take the government money, and mostly promote the government line
Agreed. And it was telling that he didn’t mention the fact that Rebel Media didn’t get the inner-party official media accreditation to receive funding to publish party-approved propaganda. Rebel should take it to court as the government has no business funding liberal-friendly publications. I’d donate to that.
It’s not a challenge it’s a threat. Doing 50 burpees in the morning is a challenge. Having some asshole with a gun make you do 50 burpees is a threat.
Bingo!
Trudeau doesn’t like that people can actually say that they hate him and not just because he’s a feckless dork but because he’s an evil dictator.

Can’t the internet censorship bills be defeated with a good vpn? On top of that you get some better streaming content too.
The Chinese say No, you can’t.
The government can make VPNs illegal.
It’s not possible to see what’s inside a VPN encrypted data stream, but it is possible to see that it is a VPN encrypted data stream.
Similar with Tor; a Tor node can be detected, they’ll just make it illegal to operate a Tor node, or require all sites operating on Canadian soil to reject packets from known Tor nodes.
About the only way of communicating safely in an Internet-hostile regime is direct-to-sky satellite Internet.
+1 for Musks Starlink.
After the Emergency Powers Act was used against peaceful demonstrators, and continues to be used against some, is it any wonder that the government is pushing for these new powers?
No Fuhrer can allow free speech, even from a hopelessly outnumbered minority. Ideas are dangerous and threatening to the paranoid and psychopathic mob, particularly their sociopath-leaders. The LPC-NDP alliance has allowed the Liberals to drop all residual pretense of liberalism and go all-in with their long-standing policy brain-trust socialist-fascists. The CRTC is a textbook example of national socialism.
Coyne tries to be aloof and above partisan journalism and likely succeeds in pissing off most everyone. In this article, he seems to be trying to be relevant, perhaps in search for “likes”. His reliable fan-base likely resides in the mindless mushy middle of the spectrum.
Isn’t Coyne an uncle to a bastard spawn of the pig? He is merely performing whatever function has been given to him.
Andrew Coyne is a cousin of Debra Coyne, mother of PET’s youngest son.
Daughter actually, PET’s only girl.
Thanks. I didn’t know Chairman PET had a child outside of his marriage to Margaret.
His father was also a former governor of the Bank of Canada. Yeah, he’s well-placed in society to sound fatuous and get away with it.
“His father was also a former governor of the Bank of Canada. Yeah, he’s well-placed in society to sound fatuous and get away with it.”
Then he’s silently cheerleading for Marc Carney, climate change whackjob.
Let me correct that.
Andrew Coyne is a cousin of Debra Coyne, mother of PET’s bastard daughter.
Justin is also a bastard. In more ways than one.

That is all…
Same comment as for VPN.
Possession of an internet ground-terminal: forbidden. Penalty, $5m fine and 50 years imprisonment.
I’ll assume that they will be as effective as the CRTC going after people with dishes that were from companies that aren’t RoBelUs
It can be very expensive to install, and expensive subscription (over $100/mn), not recommended for urban areas, and lastly, it’s not reliable – periodic outages to be expected, and affected by weather.
I’ve had starlink since nov 2020 and only had 1 outage that lasted over 15 minutes, setup is incredibly easy – mount the dish and it automatically aims itself. Is pricey though, but worth it when there are no other options
I’ve had mine for almost a year.. NOT affected by snow, rain etc.. Tiny outages.. longest for 10 minutes,, generally seconds..
Define “bogus opposition.”
So Coyne spits from time-to-time instead of swallowing. He is, and always will be, a far-left propagandist.
If Coyne recited his piece from within a bouncy castle, he might have more credibility.
Coyne at one time was sort of neutral. Harper drove him mad, though, and he went rabidly anti CPC as a result, becoming little more than just another MSM Liberal shill.
You wanted this, Coyne, so you can get it. Good and hard.
I was with Ezra Steyn Julian Porter and Coyne during the HRC auto da fe in Vancouver ten years or more ago.
Ezra and Steyn regular guys….Coyne was a stuck up cnut….thinks he’s the Sage of Baltimore.
He’s queer isn’t he ? Not that it matters of course.
This is just another front in the Canadian civil war.
The Liberals attack on multiple fronts:
Canadian history/monuments/figures – check
Canadian military – check
Canadian symbols/flag – check
Canadian civil liberties – check
Canadian English speaking whites – check
Provincial jurisdictions – check
Canadian conservative/libertarians – check
Canadian prosperity – check
Canadian food and energy – check
Canadian security – check
Trudeau has attacked all of these and weakened every single one.
The sick fkn traitor is winning and in three years will have won.
” The sick fkn traitor is winning and in three years will have won. “.
Not as long as you possess rope AND the WILL to use it.
When you lose Andrew Coyne….
… it means turdo is late with that CBC job offer.
But not necessarily too late.
Instead of adding the internet for the CRTC to dictate, take away the authority of the CRTC to control commercial radio and television. Simply allow anyone to pay a fee and get a radio license. We don’t need to protect radio stations from each other. There are essentially 1060 AM frequencies. Allow 20 high powered frequencies in each regional market and 100 medium or low powered frequencies in each local market. For a low powered station charge $10,000 for the license and $500 per month. For a high powered station charge $1,000,000 and say $20,000 per month. End of CRTC involvement other that policing porn or clear calls to violence. If you are the 10th talk station in the market no-one really cares. Do something similar with broadcast TV.
One addition thing: no one entity can own more than say 20% of the market.
The regime of Turdhole cannot exist without extreme censorship and they’re in a panic over this.
This is really no different than what chretien fought for near the end of his reign of error. He wanted to make it punishable for printing anything negative about the liberal party prior to the election. Does anyone else remember that?
This bow tie wrestler is just concerned he won’t have a hot job curating content at Canada On Line.
Coyne will be back to supporting the Liberals and their policies by Tuesday.
