Is HBO Max available in Canada?  I recently started a subscription to it and just finished watching the first 3 episodes of Tokyo Vice. The story is very fascinating, based on a book of the same name. I visited Japan for 3 weeks back in 2013 and found it exceptionally interesting. Most Japanese people seem to be exceptionally polite and kind but there’s clearly an underbelly, The Yakuza, that play by a very different set of rules. I looked around and found this animated video about them very informative.

    1. Thanks for the tip. It’s been years since I last read that strip. I didn’t like it at first, but Gary Larson’s absurdist humour eventually grew on me.

  4. I saw a troubling claim about the Russian attack on Mariopul.

    Ukrainian defenders in Mariupol claimed late on April 11 that Russian forces used drone-delivered chemical weapons against Ukrainian troops in Mariupol on April 11.[16] Victims reported shortness of breath and ataxia. ISW cannot independently confirm these reports. However, DNR Defense Spokesperson Eduard Basurin said Russian forces would likely use unspecified chemical weapons against Ukrainian forces in Mariupol earlier on April 11.[17] Basurin said Russian forces should use “chemical troops” against Ukrainian defenders of the Azovstal Steel Plant to “smoke moles out of their burrows” due to the difficulty of storming the facility. Kremlin media outlets amplified Brasurin’s claim prior to the Ukrainian claim of a chemical attack.

    DNR is the Donetsk Peoples Republic. They are one of the Breakaway Ukrainian provinces supported by Russia. Their troops are fighting alongside the Russians in Mariopul. They would/should know what Russian Troops are doing in Mariopul?

    Will F. Joe Biden treat this as a real red line, or will he treat it like an Obama Syrian Red Line?

    1. I have seen those reports too. I am still waiting for confirmation but would not surprise me one bit. They have done the same thing in Syria. Russians will russian.

  16. Did my weekly grocery shopping this AM in Sodom on the Rideau. I and one or two others were the only ones not wearing a face diaper. I saw a father with three under 6 boys, all dutifully rebreathing their own bacteria like the good little rabbits they are. Funnily, for the first time since the mask mandates were dropped, I felt as if I existed on a different, perhaps higher plane than the masked sheep. And it felt good to not be like them, i.e. NPCs participating in a fascist kabuki play to appease the God of COVID.

  21. Hey, Earth Day is April 22! Need to replace all my burned out light bulbs so we can get a good glow going, fuel up the genset, stock the beer fridge & make sure there is sufficient firewood split for both the wood stove & backyard firepit for the evening. Too bad it’s against the bylaws to burn tires or railroad ties.

    Earth day is coming up. It is a good time to remind the public what the predictions were 52 years ago

    Decent old movie with Bob Mitchum & Brian Keith. Lots about the Yakuza. Also on netflix, there’s a series called Midnight Diner, about a little diner in downtown Tokyo Shinjuku district that opens at midnight. There’s only one thing on the menu, but the chef, who has a huge scar across his face that looks like it came from a samurai sword, will make anything you want, as long as he has the ingredients. His clientele are Yakuza, hookers, lost souls of all kinds, the night people of Shinjuku. And his home cooking gives them all comfort somehow. The whole thing is shot in one scene, inside the tiny diner, and I loved both seasons (there are 5 in Japan, but only 2 so far on Netflix).     1. Midnight Diner is awesome. Just finished watching all of the episodes on Netflix for the second time. The Master is the sort of guy I’d sit down and share a beer with.
