Some of the price hikes will likely result in demand destruction; almost no one who shops at Costco is going to pay those prices for crab legs or (in the U.S. example) whole crab. That kind of pricing goes beyond “luxury” into realms of decadence that only the ultra-wealthy can indulge in. A lot of that stuff’s gonna end up in the dumpster. I’m not about to spend a month’s food budget on a single item, which is why I also don’t buy beluga caviar.

    The true bellwether for most of us will be commodity pricing for basic food items like oils, dairy, pulses and grain products.

    2. My COSTCO raised prices on Rib Eye steaks to $20.99/lb … I did without … as did others … and the meat expired in the case and on the hook.

      Last trip to COSTCO … they were $10.99/lb and I bought a package. The consumer will STOP inflation … unless there is a true shortage and famine

      1. The consumer can no more stop inflation than king Canute could turn back the tide. Inflation is only and always a monetary phenomenon, if you chart M2 per unit of output and the inflation rate, they track virtually perfectly, with only a predetermined lag, and in this case correlation IS causation.

        1. The vast majority of the population haven’t seen a dime of the expanded M2 … and when prices exceed ALL means of payment … the CONSUMERS will STOP consuming. The consumer will find alternative means of survival … even if that means is crime or murder

          1. Wow. 58 cents? Currently $1.09 at our nearest grocery store, up from 99 cents a few months back, which they’ve been at for two years or more. Heading farther afoot, Safeway for example, they’re 79 cents. They frequently go on sale there, too, which never happens at the nearest one.

            Never buy groceries at Wally World.

            Price wars among the competition in the big cities can lower food prices on loss leaders.

            Eggs doubled this year. Don’t know if it’s just the run up to Easter or this latest bird flu
            $1.29-1.59 for a dozen large a year ago, now $2.89

          4. Cheapest eggs in my N.CA Safeway are $3.49/doz. … or were 2-weeks ago. God knows what they cost now.

      3. Not true that the consumer will stop it. Cost of inputs etc may prevent production at a price acceptable to the consumer. So, no ribeye.

  3. $130 a kilo for crab legs doesn’t seem all that expensive…if you’re jeff Bezos.
    The Germans can eat grass for all I care. But only if it has been naturally fertilized.

  5. A 10 kilo bag of white flour regularly went on sale for 10 dollars, now the same bag is around 18 to 28 dollars. A small bag, goes for around 14 dollars. I read chicken is going to go up by 80% and pork and beef around 20%. I have no idea how families are going to feed their kids, my guess Kraft Dinner and fish sticks made out of pollack will be deemed the new healthy meal.

          1. Ate gator once, Sturgis, 1990. Served up grilled, slathered with BBQ sauce, on a stick. Similar colour & texture as pork. Tasty.

      Definitely need to buy the specials these days.

  12. Crab legs add on is nonsense. Crab harvesting is seasonal. The last season stocks were too low so there was a moratorium. So, if you understand supply and demand, then you know why they are expensive. It’s as simple as that.

    1. Orson, supply and demand is difficult for many people as they think the government supplies their demand.

        1. Well, on a positive note. Crab beds are going to be brimming for next season due to the nix on harvesting most recently…which should see prices relatively low. And, let’s face it. While tasty, crab is a luxury item…unless you don’t mind Dungeness Crab…which is lower priced and IMO…just as enjoyable.

          1. I’ve gotten crabs twice.
            Both were enjoyable getting but annoying to get rid of…

    Canada currently charges a tariff of 35% on all products from Belarus and Russia.
