I’m having a hard time picturing any serious country depending on Canadian assistance to defend itself. Maybe as part of a larger coalition i.e. USA but Canada alone? That’s laughable.

Our youngest brother served in the Canadian military for 2 years (1980 to 1982) and was totally disgusted that the military did not even have blanks, let alone bullets for training exercises. The troops had to “pretend” to fire their guns. He only got bullets when he did 6 months of UN Peacekeeping duties in the Sinai Desert.

Our military is still waiting to have their ancient side arms replaced, they are so old and out dated you have to point them sideways so they’ll shoot straight. Yea what exactly are we going to send to the Ukraine, when they sent my husband to Bosnia they gave him six bullets while the Americans had literally dozen of boxes filled with rounds.

1. Only officers carry sidearms.
2. The Inglis HP35 is still a fine sidearm, and, to be honest, I’d probably prefer it to whatever the idiots in charge decide to replace it with, just like I’d rather have an FN-FAL than an M-16. I will grant that the M-16 is a step up from the Sterling SMG for Medics and Logistics people, though.
The real issues with the CAF are that its way too small by a factor of about 3 or 4, and big-ticket items like fighter jets, frigates and submarines.
1. Tank and AFV crewmembers carry pistols, alone with a long list of other personnel that don’t wear officers rank insignia, such as crew served weapons operators. Officers in infantry companies usually carry rifles and not pistols.
2. Canada didn’t have the FN-FAL. It had the FN C1, which has a few notable differences to adapt for our climate. Canada doesn’t have the M-16 either. It has the C-7 which, while derived from the M-16, has notable differences. The 9mm SMG was used by way more than just combat service support people. It was the standard personal weapon for Armoured Corps members in Armoured Regiments.
But by all means, keep proving you flunked out of militia weekend basic training, blowhard. Do you walk around with medals you bought on ebay on November 11th as well?

Mention FN C1 anywhere on the planet except Canada, and you’ll get a blank look, same with the C7.
I didn’t do any training with armored units. I guess fighter pilots also have an HP35 in their kit, and I guess you can find them in the navy, too.
Oh, and we called the Sterling a C1, too.
And we called the M67 a C13.

A bit of trivia re: the HP35. It was the only “lots-of-them-made” pistol used by both sides in WW2. FN could see Belgium was going to get invaded by the Germans again – just like last war – so they sent the blueprints to Colt, in the U.S. But Colt didn’t need them, it was cranking-out M1911A1’s for the U.S. armed forces, so the blueprints were passed on to John Inglis in Toronto. We issued them to our forces, and the Germans took-over the FN plant and issued them to their paratroopers – there were a couple battles in France after D-Day where Canadians and Germans might’ve shot at each other with HP35’s, and many of ours might’ve had war service in WW2, that’s how old they are. And yes, it’s still a fine pistol – don’t pick a fight with somebody who knows how to shoot one!

There are a bunch of reasons why most forces all over the planet went with 9mm over .45ACP.

Building Effective National Defence Teams” and “Gender Inclusivity in the Canadian Armed Forces: The Role of the Chief Petty Officer Second Class/Master Warrant Officer”. All very important subjects when faced with the threat of war against a heavily armed conventional and nuclear opponent. Would have thought something alongs the lines of “Officers must play a key role in employing hand-held anti-armour weapons against a heavy armour opponent” would have been more timely.

Canada is an unserious country governed by unserious people. We are not prepared for any serious emergency, let alone war. Our institutions are weak and hollow and our infrastracture is falling apart. No government anywhere in the country is doing anything to address of the fundamental issues the country faces and the people don’t seem to care.

When it comes to talking about the Canadian military. I got lots and nothing at the same time. No one really wants to hear from me.
Canada doesn’t do “military”, because militarizes are for killing foreigners. Canada does militarized police because militarized police are about protecting foreigners and trampling citizens.
Canad has a larger militarized police force(s) around you than and few military for a reason.
I saw a suggestion somewhere, not all that long ago (may have even been here), of a (military) union between Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the U.K. and the U.S.
I’m sorry, but my first reaction was derisive scorn, and nothing any of those countries (including my own) has changed that for the better… Pick your reasons; they’re too many to list! But not one of those countries (except possibly the U.S.) has a leader, or any chance of getting one soon, worthy of the job…!!!
One other comment… In all the fuss for/against N.A.T.O., almost everyone seems to have forgotten its little sister S.E.A.T.O.! South East Asian Treaty Organisation! It sadly died ages ago, and I have to equally sadly add, just as well.

“Canada is a middle power…” Dream on, Mélanie…In order for Canada to be a “middle power” we need to have a military the same size as that of Britain’s (160K) or France’s (300K) or Germany’s (190K)–those numbers are “active military”–in other words, people who are fully employed as a military member. Those are middle powers–Canada’s military is about 80K (and they have to include our Reservists to get to that number)–our “active military” stands around 69K (and that’s counting the people who are on their way out because of medical issues like PTSD).
Canada has fewer deployable troops at any given time than they have working in their Ottawa Defense Headquarters building.

For what contingency are weapons needed to hold back? Invasion by Idaho? Not the government, just the militia.
Our military capability is this way because Canada is founded to preserve the government not the nation.
Rail lines can be blocked and it might get a committee hearing, but if the residents around parliament hill have to endure truck horns someone is going to get it.
If the mandate in Ottawa was preserve the nation, we would have a capable military with a noticeable presence in the Arctic, complete with nuclear subs. What we have is a department in DND that issues relic firearms to the indigenous residents up north and in return they are to let the local constabulary know if they see something of interest.
