Inflation is now running hot in 80% of Canada’s price categories;
Consumer price pressures aren’t just accelerating, they’re broadening — and that could spell trouble for the Bank of Canada.
It’s getting difficult to argue the acceleration of inflation to three-decade highs is transitory or being imported from abroad. Nearly 80 per cent of the 48 subcategories in Canada’s consumer price index are now rising by more than 2 per cent, according to Bloomberg calculations on data released Wednesday by the national statistics agency.
That’s the highest proportion since 1991, far exceeding the 50 per cent average. Around two-thirds of prices are rising more than 3 per cent, the upper end of the Bank of Canada’s targeting band.

It’s no solution for the B of C to start raising interest rates. That’s going to torpedo the fortunes of a lot of manufacturers faster than two years of pandemic restrictions could.
Once a fiat currency is in the downward cycle as it has been for over 40 years, all a central bank can do is go with the flow. Within a year, I expect to see negative interest rates. That will unleash a whole new set of ways to consume capital.
The family budget will balance itself.

This idea that inflation has now increased to an annualized rate of 7.5% (or whatever) is complete bull-crap. My costs (and my prices) are up 20% just to stay at the same margins. A good friend who runs a much bigger business (up to 600 people) says his main cost driver other than people (fuel) is up 42% over last year and last year was up a lot from the previous year. My gut feeling is that inflation is running 15+% a year at a minimum. Insurance, fuel, hotels, food – all up substantially. The only thing not up substantially is wage inflation. That is the big shoe yet to drop.

Fuel, food and utilities are up around 15% for sure. But Christmas trees dropped considerably about 7 weeks ago.
