E-car from VW needs 13 hours for 650 kilometers – without heating

Even under the best conditions, many electric cars are still a long way from being suitable for long journeys. As a car comparison test recently showed, no electric car can cover more than 440 kilometers at a time at a speed of 130 *. The car reporter Lisa Brack and EFAHRER.com author also had to experience this painfully. She dared an electric car long-distance experiment. Because to buy her new VW e-Up, she drove from Munich to the VW Autostadt in Wolfsburg to pick up her car personally.

Brack needed 12 hours and 45 minutes for the return journey from Wolfsburg to Munich, covering a distance of 654 kilometers. The route would normally take around six hours. But it wasn’t just the duration of the journey that was appalling – the temperature during the journey was anything but funny: the heating stayed off for almost the entire return journey in freezing temperatures: Because the colder it is, the more the operation of the heating systems puts a strain on the electric car battery. Recently, the electric car cold problem was also evident at a large German company, because in Berchtesgaden in Bavaria , Deutsche Post is withdrawing its expensive e-vans due to snow and cold and is back to combustion models for the winter months.

Lisa Brack wanted to avoid Volkswagen’s expensive service costs of 700 euros and also report on her long-distance experience. To do this, she sends her electric car straight to the endurance test, because the temperatures on the way back are freezing. At 0 to minus 5 degrees she starts the journey home to Bavaria. These are unfavorable conditions for electric cars, because low temperatures paralyze the batteries in electric cars*, especially in winter.

For the trip, Brack covered himself with a hat, scarf, gloves and generally warm clothing, because after the first full charge, the VW e-Up shows a range of just 216 kilometers. And even this information is not guaranteed, which is why Brack opts for the so-called Eco-Plus mode and, of course, for the heating to be switched off. When the windscreen is frosty, heating wires ensure a clear view, so the reporter driving the test can do without the power-guzzling fan heater completely.

In order to install an appropriate app for the model, she asks a VW employee when the car is handed over. However, he immediately blocked it: “Don’t ask me that. The digital services are not included in our training courses.” So Brack has to take everything into his own hands. Then it’s on the way home, time 2:45 p.m.

    Would not need subsidies
    would not need future legislation to ban gas powered cars

    1. When some liberal tries to compare EV’s with the change from Horse and Buggy I do try to set them straight.
      First we were not legislated to give up the horse for the auto.
      Second, the cost of a horse was about the same as one auto and only one auto was require as opposed to multiple horses.
      Third, horses burn fuel at all times where the auto only did when it was operated.
      Fourth, autos went faster and farther than horses.
      EV’s restrict how far you can go as they require too much time to recharge. An EV with an empty battery cannot be refuelled in a remote location.
      Naturally, the liberals cover their ears and chant lah, lah, lah. They are too brain dead to understand.

      They don t have to pay people to buy tv sets or cheeseburgers or gasoline cars.

      Electric cars are not ready, people don t want them.

      The 3% of people who drive them only do so because the government gave them a few thousand dollars of our hard earned tax dollars.

  4. And that’s at zero to -5. As I detailed in last month’s trip to Saskatoon, WTF happens to the range at -30 when toques, scarves & mitts don’t quite cut it? Especially when it doesn’t start the trip from a nice, warm garage?

  5. I do not understand any of the push to EVs. Every aspect of the engineering is a stupid contradictory compromise.

    To have long range you need hundreds of pounds of batteries on board at all times, But 95% of the time that extra weight is unproductive, wasteful ballast.

    To charge large batteries you need a long period of time stationary in one place with electrical service or shorter times with exceptional and highly specialized very high amperage -but utilizing such causes expensive permanent damage to electrical cells.

    Who wants a long range electric car? To get as far away from the infrastructure necessary to use it? To find all the like minded people 400 miles from San Jose waiting inline to use the Supercharger on their way to Yosemite?

    What seems to make sense is small batteries in plug in hybrids which can charge on 110v service and be good for 15-25 miles of electric charge, then use gasoline in big 20gal tanks for an onboard generator to provide the standard 400 mile ish range. Bonus points for simplifying the mechanical drivetrain and eliminating gearboxes and differentials, especially for full-sized trucks and suv.

    But everything on offer is exactly the opposite- Hybrid compact cars with tiny tanks with extra drivetrain complications. Or huge v8s with more complication an no improvement to fuel consumption.

    Wth is the point of the BMW I3, Audi A8 or Chevy Volt or Suburban Hybrids? Why would I ever take a pure electric car beyond the radius of a major centre?

      My neighbor has a “plug-in hybrid” Prius Prime. It’s just like his last Prius but with a larger battery. We can drive 20-40 minutes on the battery before the gas engine kicks in (depends on the hills). It’s a pretty sweet deal now with the gas prices where they are.

      Correct. Therefore the logical conclusion is that they are being pushed not to make things better but to make things worse for the customer. To reduce customer’s independence and herd them into mass transit. They don’t want EVs to work. That’s the whole point of pushing for them.

    A cold battery would likely produce next to nothing.
    A warm battery would struggle to keep the passengers from dying from hypothermia and would likely propel the car for less than 100 km.

    So we have to produce CO2 to run our cars and produce CO2 to heat our cars so they don’t start out frozen. Can someone slap the idiots that keep proposing this lunacy.

  7. It was -27 yesterday, our new Nissan wouldn’t start but my 14 year old Golf turned on a dime. New car is still deader than a nit, but it’s the vehicle with snow tires-sigh. I can’t imagine driving one of those EV rat traps in subzero weather.

  8. The goal was never to replace all ICE cars on the road with EVs. It was always to ensure most citizens would lose access to private transportation and be forced to use public transit while our so-called betters enjoy clear roads and absolute control. The people pushing EVs are just as much the enemies of the people as are our governments.

  9. I’ll stick to my old diesel. Yes, at -40 I have to plug it in for a bit but it is consistently reliable. An EV in cold winter weather won’t work. You would have to keep it in a heated garage just to get it started………….oh, wait. The garage might turn out to be an unexpected bonfire.

    also, charging in the cold is not so great, because charging is a endothermic activity

  15. Wait until there is a conflict with China – who controls 90 % of rare metal production – and China decides to keep it all for themselves.

    Not only will electric car production ( or repair) come to a screeching stop, but same with wind power, solar and it will also be hard to find parts/batteries for cell phones, tablets and laptops…not to mention all the industrial machinery that depends on electronic gadgets full of Chinese rare metals…

    1. We all know the EPA gasoline mileage figure posted for new vehicles is based on a modelled formula. Useless except for self satisfied ideologues or for comparison purposes between vehicles. What is never mentioned is that the model formula for an EV allows for a certain amount of regenerative power from the braking system. How much, we are not told, of course. Fine for a City vehicle but what happens to the range when a long highway trip is planned. Not too much regen if you are driving from Calgary to the Hat. Or anywhere west of Kenora I would guess. A double whammy, colder than a mother in laws smile and no regeneration. What was that range you said.
