Regarding your last question. I have long been a proponent of the party leader being chosen by the caucus instead of the party in general (and more specifically, by the people who bought a membership to the party just to vote for the leader). It is how it’s done in England, and it means the leader has to fear the caucus just as much as the individual MPs fear the leadership. It leads to situations like you linked to.
Or at least restricted to those persons who held a membership for the previous 12 to 24 months. That would slow down the members of (voting) convenience.
