Like White privilege, family privilege is an unacknowledged and unearned benefit instantiated in U.S. laws, policies, and practices and bestowed upon traditional or “standard” nuclear families to the disadvantage of non-traditional configured family systems (e.g., sole-parent families, unmarried committed partners rearing children together, grandparents raising grandchildren). Family privilege is defined as the benefits, often invisible and unacknowledged, that one receives by belonging to family systems long upheld in society as superior to all others. It serves to advantage certain family forms over others and is typically bestowed upon White, traditional nuclear families.

Family privilege is a structural mechanism “hidden” within our White supremacist society that creates systemic barriers to equal opportunity and justice for all families. In this webinar, attendees will examine, recognize, and learn how to dismantle the manifestations of family privilege in our social systems by using an intersectional framework developed by critical feminist and race scholars. Participants will be challenged to consider how structural forces create differential experiences and opportunities that produce diverse family constellations.

    1. No, you’re still privileged. Because shut up, if for no other reason.

      You own things, and plan ahead, and not everyone does that so it must be some unfair advantage (like having to learn from your mistakes) that brought you to where you are now. We cannot have equality of outcome until no-one has things. Only then can the glorious (communist) revolution be recognized as successful. Because everyone will finally be equal.

  7. The Byedin-Heiress Admin. is doing their best to destroy the traditional American family by devising new ways to tax our “wealth”. They want to “level the playing field” by destroying family wealth. Intact two parent, male and female families pass on their wealth to their children. This is deemed “unfair” by all those people who REJECTED traditions for their own personal “enlightened” version of what constitutes a family … such as a becoming a poor, black, welfare mother who depends on handouts. Or two mommies raising their own lesbian/transgendered children.

    The government is transferring wealth in the name of … equity.

    1. Your comment reminds me of what I endured in high school 50 years ago. People alleged that there were a limited number of As and that I “stole” more than my fair share.

      My detractors were nowhere near as dedicated to their studies as I was, but, then, I had long-term objectives. No, actually working for my grades had nooooothing to do with my receiving them, did it?

    Married 23 years. I can’t even imagine the house the cars the vacations my life partner and I would have had we not had kids.

    In 2015 I added up what we spent on the boys. The trips for sports, the 6 $300 hockey sticks the skates the fees etc. I spent over $25000 after tax income giving my kids and my wife and I a lifetime of experience and memories.

    Some academic thinks what my wife and I do is unfair? Tell me to my face

    Lol I’ll add one more. My truck is 13 years old with 225k. Not ideal. But my 11 yr old golden retriever is about $400 a month on the family budget with his special dog food and allergy meds. (And the odd toy and his dragon Halloween costume).
    How privileged are we for spending that on a dog and not contributing to say climate change.

    The privilege we have is earned. Maybe some luck. But the wife works ridiculous hours since covid hit managing a western Canada work force and I do service work in customer homes. I work in tech service that makes me enter customer homes. Never missed a day in covid I likely was exposed in last 20 months.

    Long rant. I hate academic papers from woke never been there’s.

    1. At one time you were the Norm . Unfortunately that not the case an more. Our governments hate the 2 parent stable family’s. Our churches no longer support and guide young people. When I got married in the United Church the old minister had to write our names down so he wouldn’t forget them. I had a young Mennonite copilot that was getting married before they had to do classes with the minister were they talked about Family money, raising kids , and such. That ask some hard Questions like how are going to mange a house hold when your husband is off flying for a week at a time. Do you have some family support?

What these *cough* *cough* progressives fail to remember is that Evolution selects winners and losers without political bias.

We can’t afford to see confiscatory taxes given to re-education camps masquerading as public schools and universities so they can dispense propaganda masquerading as education and useless diplomas, just as ONE small example – as you know we could spend weeks creating a more comprehensive list of the catastrophic waste of the products of our labor.

    AND now a family unit is bestowed and the people upon whom it has been bestowed are privileged.
