        1. The only TV channel I watch nowadays is Turner Classic Movies. Unfortunately, in order to receive it, I need to take the cable company’s basic package, which includes all those commercial stations.

          I think the last time I watched one was the night that Rotten Rachel’s NDP was voted in and the only reason I did that was to watch the election coverage.

The Standish surname is not exactly a common surname, but you’re right about the Eastern Townships being settled by United Empire Loyalists. There’s a list of places in the link below where the Loyalists moved to in Upper and Lower Canada, as it was then known, notice how the P.Q. towns there have mostly English names:

  25. Another movie alert. Saturday night of next week (i. e., the 25th), Turner Classic Movies will be showing Major Dundee.

    It’s an early Sam Peckinpah movie, made several years before his masterpiece The Wild Bunch. It stars Charlton Heston, Richard Harris, Jim Hutton, and James Coburn, as well as a number of other actors who’ve been in other SP movies (e. g., Warren Oates, Ben Johnson, and Slim Pickens). Oh, and watch for a future Mrs. Peckinpah as the young lady who tends to the wounds of the unit’s bugler.

    The version that’ll be shown will likely be the restoration released some 15 years ago. It features a different musical score than what was used in the original release as well as some extra footage that ended up on the cutting room floor.

    But that restoration isn’t the version that was originally filmed. I don’t recall the entire story, but the studio insisted on cuts, which Peckinpah didn’t take too kindly to. Some of those bits were lost for good, so the story seems a bit disjointed at times.

    Still, I thought it was a pretty good western action movie.
