Trudeau drops deadline for clean water on all reserves
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau no longer gives a specific date for fulfilling his broken 2015 election promise to end all long-term boil-water advisories on Indigenous reserves and it’s not hard to see why.
There’s been no improvement in the number of reserve water systems that are at medium or high risk of failure since the Liberals took power in 2015.
There were 43% of them at risk in 2015, the same number as in 2019.

“Whiskey is for drinking–water is for fighting.” Attributed to Mark Twain
The water treatment plants would be operational if the chiefs and band councils didn’t keep pocketing the money we give them. But, Dear Leader told the chiefs that there would be no more accountability. Now he can’t figure out, although he couldn’t care less, what went wrong.
The fact that there are still First Nations chiefs who support the LPC tells you all you need to know.
Harley Munro called the chiefs and councils True Dough’s employees.
On a related note, Jaggy gets punked.

An amateur mistake by jag. Unforced error.
The chiefs are right re: niki ashton. She is a self promoting do nothing phony. She’s done nothing for the north.
The natives have the voters to get rid of her. We’ll see if they can get it done.
I thought what they really needed was boathouses…Trudeau told us that last campaign, right?

Happy, and I’m smiling

Why would he fulfill any promise when he can recycle those promises every election and they will vote for him?
How long have Liberals promised free daycare?
Since at least 1993.
Promising it to Liberal voters works, why would they screw that up?
Are Grits trying to lose this election, gift wrapping issues for Conservatives and Dippers, both taking votes from the Grit flanks?
They remind of the tuckered out Harper team of 2015. It only took debate interruptus and talking over points to topple them.
No energy, not cogent issue to mobilize, just insisting he has to divide Canadians to get them to do what he wants, like take vaccines, or pretending monetary policy doesn’t matter to families even if their mortgage goes up 25% with 2% interest rises.
Now, like Harper in 2015, he is the hunted one in the debates, bleating on about unvaccinated trying to get into airplanes, or anonymous white supremacists tapping on their keyboards, or angry voters he tries to sell as Conservative anti-vaxxers.
Every time he gets outed. He promised no vaccine mandates. He whines about climate change and systemic racism, two issues so far off the public’s concerns you need radar to find them. After his anti-vax tantrum it’s revealed Grits aren’t all vaccinated either.
Political shit he throws against the wall now fails to stick. Anybody But Trudeau has become the dominant election theme.
Have they even got it in them to try new collectivist tactics for the good of peoplekind, or how giant debt service charges are OK?
This is getting quite interesting as the Grits find their vote more frozen than an ice core sample, but with less validity.
The CBC and their seventeen viewers can’t seem to stem the tide, so look for much more shrillness, assuming anybody cares.
Good stuff, Shamrock…especially, “The CBC and their seventeen viewers can’t seem to stem the tide, so look for much more shrillness, assuming anybody cares.”
OH OH!!! That can only mean one thing – Ground Penetrating Radar. There’s only one thing they love more than clean water…cash.
Why bother with clean water facilities when you can fly water in plastic bottles to all remote reserves?
Then keep the cash flowing to compensate for the recycled election promises which become lies.
Where did they get clean water before the settlers settled in?
The media are excited that all the Big Chiefs gathered today to discuss what they want from the election. I will make it simple. Money.
Those Chevy Colorados ain’t gonna buy themselves.
Keep reminding Liberal supporters of how Justin the racist attacked his Native born woman justice minister, Jody Wilson-Raybould.
They don’t seem to like hearing about his treatment of this minority woman of color after she refused to rubber stamp his SNC Lavolin corruption schemes.
There are 600+ tribes in Canada. Like all tribal societies – they all hate each other. It wasn’t long ago that they were in a constant state of war with one another.
Why is Wilson Raybould so silent during this crazy election? Surely she has something to contribute.
She got her payout. She will now coast for the rest of her life. Someone at some time may trot her out for their benefit but hey, she was a liberal.
She has a book coming out on Sept. 21st, could be why Trudeau picked the 20th for an election day.
Any reserve that cannot figure out how to have clean water with the billions they get from government deserves to drink DIRTY WATER.
vowg – You ever been to a remote northern rez?
It’s not the average citizen who’s stealing the money.
Just like it’s not you who’s stealing the money in Ottawa.
The average guy on a northern rez lives a pretty marginal existence- and he’s the guy that needs clean water.
The people on the remote rez’s need to be told the facts. You want white man’s tech move to the town or city.
Many white men’s village really do not have 1st world services either.
Living in the bush is a choice. You made the choice accept the consequences.
One change I would make tho, is I would not give a lump sum to the crooked chiefs and council. It would be a direct monthly payment to each bona fide Native of legal age. So they can leave and become citizens as should have been done years ago.
Stay and live traditional go boil water from the ditch like anyone else Indian or white or take the check and go to town and integrate into society, with all white mans gadgets and toys you love anyway. And quit your fucking whining.
Watch
We put them on the rez. We made treaties with them. Now were forced to live up to our end of the deal.
Every little town/ village in this country got a new water treatment plant after Walkertown. Didn’t matter if it was 100 people.
I’m all for accountability. Many reservations are as well. They know the money is being stolen.
Reality is in many cases you can not even get a drilling rig into these places. Give them the option like I said, take the money that is being sent to each reserve away from the greasy crooked chief and his buddies. Divide it up individually and tell those who want the white mans, lifestyle. Move to town. If you want traditional ways fine. Stay an no more whining. In most cases all treaty obligations were fulfilled at the time.
And no the Indians do not own Canada that is Liberal bullshit, and no they are not nations, that is Liberal lies and Bullshit too. And we all know that.
Remember boys these guys didn’t choose to live where they do, that’s where they lived when they were forced off the land and onto the reservations. They’ve never lived anywhere else.
The treaties were all written by us. In our language. Many were agreed to and signed by natives who could neither read nor write. So now when they take us to court, the court sides with the natives because the terms of the treaty were not clear or they fail to address matters that are significant in the 21st century. The contract was written by only one side and ‘explained’ to the other side who had no concept of British common law and didn’t understand property rights.
The tribes are not nations. That is a fiction and is not helpful.
The Americans did not enter into treaty agreements. Nor did the BC bands.
Canada is stuck with this mess. There isn’t enough wealth in the country to satisfy everyone. Some reasonable understanding is going to have to take place.
Handing out more cash wont settle this. It will get blown and they will be back for more. Kinda like quebek….
ok, so what the fuck is wrong with the people? Are they as stupid as the rest of the Canadians? I would be able to figure out how to get clean water no matter how marginal my existence was. If someone was preventing that they would die. Damn it I am so tired of the we can’t do it shit. I have nothing left but anger for stupid people.
So Who is getting the money, there is lots of it being dumped into the Indian industry but how about showing us the ones who have been providing and receiving these dollars for several generations.Where that money went and exactly who was responsible for expending it is something that every Canadian taxpayer has a right to know.
I guarantee that the chief has the biggest and best water filtration system on his residence…
it’s just the rest of the tribe has issues…
as can be illustrated by: ” 51 water boil advisories remain in 32 communities.”
Can’t the Indians just do some tribal dancing and sweat lodging to get clean water? I mean how did they get clean water before evil civilization came and robbed them of their native rights to cholera?
My guess is the water wasn’t polluted until after the country was settled.
they mostly moved as they filled everything with excrement
they were saving their buffalo bladders of clean water for fighting forest fires they tell us and clearing fire breaks of 10 ft diameter trees with stone axes .
Suuuure, it is all white man’s pollution, and they were living in harmony with nature. Yawn.
Streams were polluted before. Camps were set up by streams and no thought given to wastes going into the water.
Animals messed in the waters while drinking, feeding or crossing. Many large animals died in the water. There is anecdotal talk of the Mississippi during the 1700 and 1800’s being un-navigable in the spring due to the large number of bison carcasses floating down it.
This affected everyone (not just Indians) before it was figured out that fresh water wasn’t as pure as we thought. Everyone had parasites in their systems just like the wildlife and domestic animals around them.
It’s so predictable, Liberals making promises to fix everything they didn’t manage to fix and blaming it on Conservatives, Harper in particular. Why this isn’t taken as an insult to our intelligence proves intelligence is in short supply.
The third rail of indian politics is… who speaks for the indians? The appointed indians or the elected indians?
Why would that matter? Neither ought to be paid attention to.
Water treatment plants are not simple, remember Waterton? Government-provided water treatment plants are of course going to be top-of-the-line technology and expensive and will require skilled reliable staff. Are the reservations going to provide personnel and take responsibility for operation and maintenance?
Given that most of these locations are remote, and small, you could easily invest in a containerized water treatment plant, with remote monitoring, and an engineering contract for the maintenance of the units…
and if the location wants to maintain them themselves, they can select a couple of locals to go learn how to do it from the DART teams that use them
When did it become the feds responsibility to see to it people got potable water FFS???
First nations are wards of the federal government.
Public health is the responsibility of all governments.
you mean Walkerton Ontario . Waterton Alberta is fine
I drink well-water. I could die at any moment. So could you.
A Rez is a slum by an other name and there is nothing sweet about it.
What the natives need isn’t clean water but a cleansing of their whole approach.
They are the poster children of UBI.
Shannonville is making cash hand over fist, building new roads, business is booming. You don’t know squat.
to be fair Justine is only one quarter Pepsi . mostly Scotch .
mixed ……. horrible in drink and human
This problem can be solved in one step: allow private companies to provide clean water under a ten-year tax holiday as long as the water meets strictly-monitored quality standards at a defined per-litre price, with the tax holiday renewed every ten years as long as the company meets conditions.
Not as a replacement for the existing water plants, but as an auxiliary source…
That way, native children get clean water at a reasonable price no matter how often the tribe-operated plant breaks down.
Offer especially open to any native entrepreneurs willing to sign up to the exact same deal.
