Pashtuns are only one of the ethnic groups in Afghanistan; there are broadly speaking Turks, Persians and Mongols and Pashtuns, plus others.
Pashtuns are of the Persian family.
Iranians view Afghans like Manhattanites view Ozarkians. Their mutually intelligible languages speak to their strong cultural connections though.
What he fails to mention is that a relative of the king decided the monarchy, which was a stabilizing influence in the region, had to go because he wanted to be dictator. He then made shady deals with the Russians and others to stay in power.

If the Afghan people had Individual Freedom and Liberty to fight for I think the Afghan army would not have folded like a wet noodle. The idiots who let the Koran be the core of the new Afghan constitution made the collapse inevitable. Their country needed to inspire and develop patriotism so the people would have the strength to take a stand and fight hard. For that they needed guaranteed individual rights including the right to pursue happiness for them and their family. Nobody’s going to fight harder than someone fighting for their family no matter where in the World they happen to be. The Taliban tyrants will make sure the Afghanis never get such a chance again. I spent a total of 20 months of my life on three combat deployments to Kabul (2004-05), Kandahar 2007 then KAF in 2011. In 2007 we lost 26 Cdn soldiers KIA there in only 5 months.
