      Shares in farm, fishing, and small business corporations is the problem. Farm assets transferred from parent to child is less of a problem. The problem is, if the parent is poor, they will likely be stung with alternate minimum income tax. If they are rich, they will not.

      The problem with a tax free transfer of shares of a farm, fishing, or small business corporation is that you own pieces of paper. That piece of paper may represent a million dollars worth of assets but your corporation owns it, not you. For you to get the million dollars in value, that you inherited, out of the company you have to pay taxes on it as if it were a dividend. As such, the tax free transfer of shares in a farming, fishing, or small business corporation has been a rarely used fiction.
