On May 13, the U.S. senate approved a bill, first brought forward by Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, that would allow U.S. cruise ships to bypass Canadian ports for as long as the borders are closed. To become law, this bill must still pass in the US House of Representatives and then be signed by President Joe Biden.
Funny thing about hysteria, once you’ve induced enough of it you can’t just turn it off like a light switch. And now’s as good a time as any to dust off the old saying, ” there’s nothing quite as permanent as a temporary government solution.

I can’t understand why the US has kept the Canadian border closed while allowing in unlimited Mexicans. Border cities in the US would make a crapload of cash from bored Canadians.

These are the James Bay NIMBYs, who complain about traffic, noise, and icky ship pollution and tour buses. It’s the major industry in Victoria, when you don’t count government. Who cares about all those that own and work at all the related businesses? Whale watching, restaurants, carriage tours, taxis, hotels, Butchart gardens, tour bus operators, etc.
Horgan has been eerily silent on this issue, a signal that he is in league with the Greentards on this one, as most of the businesses affected are not unionized. “Let them feel the pain” .

As I understand it for a ship to operate commercially within US waters it needs to be built, staffed, flagged US.
Unless it makes a stop at a foreign port, thus Victoria and Vancouver.

Okay – can see that electricity from Idaho could come up via the Kootenay valley and plug into the SE grid, but how would Montana and North Dakota electrons get to BC that economically? They have a couple of really skookum dams up the Columbia Valley (Revelstoke and Mica) who are good producers.
The part I like is that some of that coal is from Idaho because the US left coast will not allow any more coal handling facilities due to NIMBies and BANANAs. Given that the NDP are owned by unions, I suspect they have made them look the other way.

The US allowed only “essential” passing.
Simply put, because of the Jones Act, cruise ships that were not US-built, US-owned, and with US crews cannot travel between U.S. ports, unless they stop at a foreign port. This means that a ship that is foreign in any way (origin, ownership, crew) ship can go roundtrip from Seattle to Alaska or San Francisco only if it stops in Canada.
Similarly, to stop in Hawaii means that a ship that is “foreign” in any sense of the word must either sail from Canada or Mexico. Or, as NCL did for years, stop in some tiny foreign port to get around the law — in their case, the Republic of Kiribati.
More than one client told me the story of being on a 10-day cruise roundtrip from Honolulu around the Hawaiian Islands, with this detour that took over a day’s sailing each way, to a port that didn’t seem like anything more than a mildly commercialized pit stop. On occasion, the winds and/or sea get so rough that the ship can only touch land long enough to satisfy the legal requirements, and passengers are not allowed ashore.
Of course, there were significant financial advantages to the cruise line for all this trouble, including not only the ability to register the ship in a low-tax country, but also hiring foreign staff and paying them wages that would never pass U.S. labor laws.

Actually, it is not sure that Albertans can venture westward, even if they own homes there. And, to be blunt, there are a lot of areas in eastern BC who are dependent on vacationing Albertans.
It’s quite some years ago, but the easternmost areas of BC were making “we should join Alberta” noises. They’re much closer to Calgary than Vancouver (indeed, a lot of patients from se BC come to Calgary for medical treatment”, and they felt – rightly – that the government in Victoria was catering essentially to residents of the lower mainland and only valued the hinterlands for what they (the gov’t) could extract from the area in taxes. Their proposal was that the western Alberta boundary – which ran along the 120th longitude until it hit the Rockies, should keep going along that line and thus allow the eastern portion to join Alberta. Given that would have given Alberta the Okanagan, that was never going to happen, though there might have been an argument for running the border down the peaks of either the Percells or the Selkirks. Ironically, there has – on and off – been propositions from the BC portion of the Peace River country that the BC – Alberta border should follow the Rockies up there as they also feel both neglected and exploited by Victoria.
Don’t complain. Don’t phone your MP or MLA. Just tell anyone who asks “BC voted for this”. If you are walking past a business where the owner is putting up the “out of business” sign, be sure to yell out for all to hear: “BC voted for this”.
If you are on coffee row, and you hear people complaining, jump in and say “BC voted for this”.
