    2. Judging attitudes from the past by today’s standards is always a tough call
      Admiral King was a smart war time leader who recognized early on that Japan’s hegemony in the Pacific theatre had to be crushed. In his thesis written in 1932 at Naval War College Newport RI he wrote about the limits to electoral politics in deciding the best path for the country:
      “……the inability of the average individual (the man in the street) to understand the cause and effect not only in foreign but domestic affairs, as well as his lack of interest in such matters. Added to these elements is the manner in which our representative form of government has developed as to put a premium on mediocrity and to emphasize the defects of the electorate already mentioned”

        Both quotes from memory so excuse me if not accurate.

        King loved his navy and was always willing to obliterate anyone and everyone who he perceived as a threat to the navy, foreign and domestic. I give him that. He was patriot. Sure. He helped to resolve the Mark 14 torpedo problems when none else had listened. He was also a pure asshole and an Anglophobe.

            Among King’s most idiotic positions taken, arguably out of sheer spite was the opposition to closing the North Atlantic gap via long range air cover.

            And he was a vengeful petty thug at hart, his persecution of captain McVay of USS Indianapolis is a perfect example of what a little man he was on personal level.

            He left active duty in Dec.1945 and had a debilitating stroke in 1947. I make no excuses for his behavior towards others but if he asked about retirement at age 64 he probably recognized early on his own coming limitations.

He delayed instituting convoy systems in US navy controlled waters because Brits advised him to do it immediately following US entry into the war. He opposed releasing long range air cover to close the mid Atlantic gap. He did everything to prevent the British from coming back into the Pacific theatre etc etc etc.

          6. Some of what we’ve been making comments about is discussed in the 1st chapter Journey to the Second Front in John Keegan’s Six Armies in Normandy. King could always count on MacArthur and Marshall to line up on his side of the discussion.

      city. Only, the amount stolen before charges will be laid is $5,000. One multi-national
      allows it’s security guards to re-take the stolen merchandise e.i. outside the store. Though
      that may provoke a retaliatory attack from the thief e.i. being struck by the thief using his
      vehicle as a weapon. No charges are laid as it may result in a social media backlash in favour
      of the thief. The customers pay more and are less safe, but owners without ties to the
      local community, everything can be measured in money. Neither staff nor customers are
      regarded as fellow members of the family of man.

Stories of overwhelmed funeral business was, of course, totally fake. Stories of overwhelmed hospitals were also fake. Hospitals handled significantly less cases in 2020 that prior years. A large part of the year had hospitals absolutely empty.

    1. All the bands in the Prairie Provinces signed treaties specifically putting mining ahead of residual aboriginal rights, the only residual right being hunting. The also gave up the right to the federal government to regulate the extent of aboriginal hunting rights. Read some treaties. No Indian or judge ever has.

      To his credit, in recent years, Limbaugh showed signs of figuring out—finally—that the “deep state” is not the good guys and that all those CIA and Pentagon officials he’d been cheering for all those years were maybe not the selfless patriots he apparently long assumed them to be. He seems to have figured out that the Dick Cheneys of the world are maybe not friends of the American people.

      But for the most part, his legacy was one of being proregime when the GOP is in and being antiregime when the GOP is out. Given that he was an entertainer, of course, it’s hard to fault Limbaugh too much for this. He was just giving his audience what it wanted. And what his audience wanted was a simplistic yet incoherent idea which maintained that things are mostly fine when Republicans are in office, but that the world is mess when Democrats win the White House. He was clearly very successful at delivering the message.
