Calls grow for US to rely on rapid tests to fight pandemic;
When a Halloween party sparked a COVID-19 outbreak at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, school officials conducted rapid screening on more than 1,000 students in a week, including many who didn’t have symptoms.
Although such asymptomatic screening isn’t approved by regulators and the 15-minute tests aren’t as sensitive as the genetic one that can take days to yield results, the testing director at the historically Black college credits the approach with quickly containing the infections and allowing the campus to remain open.
“Within the span of a week, we had crushed the spread. If we had had to stick with the PCR test, we would have been dead in the water,” said Dr. Robert Doolittle, referring to the polymerase chain reaction test that is considered the gold standard by many doctors and Food and Drug Administration regulators.
If you want something to fail, put regulators in charge. Rapid testing technology was developed nearly a year ago and never implemented at scale, all while thousands died and millions were bankrupted.

Nova Scotia has been using rapid testing for months. They started doing it in the pubs and found a number of asymptomatic people who then tested positive with the follow up test. Since then, the rapid test had been used extensively anywhere there was a small outbreak, ie seniors homes, in university towns prior to class commencement last fall and after Christmas break, etc. They have pop-up mobile testing facilities and use it on an ongoing and random basis all over the province.
In addition, travellers entering the province are asked to self isolate- that seems to be where the current cases come from. To date, it’s working. I have no idea why other places aren’t using the rapid testing. It might not be 100% accurate but it’s a hell of a lot better than the alternative.
RLP, so now we can get false positives even faster. A test is not a case and even the WHO says asymptomatic transmission is very unlikely. There was a study done in China, our favorite communist country, with 10 million people that said asymptomatic transmission was not happening. W H O do you believe? If you are not sick you cannot spread it. You do know that the whu who flu is not decimating the population of Canada or the world.

Again, rapid testing would not replace PCR testing in a high-risk setting such as this. It would supplement it.

And PCR tests are “accurate”? They are erroneous in the politically useful direction.
They don’t like self-administered rapid tests because there’s no reporting mechanism. Mildly affected people might refuse to turn themselves in to authorities.
Heaven forbid that people be permitted to make responsible decisions on their own without government involvement!

Not sure what he means by the “genetic” test. The PCR test is a tremendous political convenience to the authorities because it wildly overstates cases. And simply by reducing the number of test cycles, the number of “cases” can be reduced; the WHO has already given the green light, AKA excuse, for this approach. Watch for this, as the influenza season draws down. The “success” of government policies will be miraculous and a federal election will follow.

Since Fall 2019, ~20% have already been infected and have acquired natural immunity.
Vaccines are not for extinguishing the pandemic. Vaccines are for reducing the death rate. Just like the flu vaccine.
I also think that acquiring “natural immunity” from covid has yet to be proven. It is already mutating. Chances are that it will become another seasonal virus like a cold or flu. Unfortunately, like the Spanish Flu, it will take a while to get there.
We don’t give flu shots to persons who are not at risk vs covid vaccine passports for all.
No one died of covid in the 15,000 Moderna placebo test group. They are no longer sticking tubes into people incorrectly instead have found more effective treatments. They are getting adverse reactions and deaths from the vaccine however.
Those “vaccinated” can still spread covertly. Some who have taken vaccine have come down with covid.
It’s unknown how long the vaccine will impart immunity and how frequent booster shoots will be required.

The problem with rapid tests is that the health authorities don’t know the results.
If there was a cheap test that I could make available to my employees, we would make decisions based on the results that would be good for everyone involved, decisions in real time.
The tests that are used now tell you something that happened a week or two ago.
Again, that is the problem with these tests. Someone could make a rational decision based on timely information. We can’t have that.
