  1. It appears this was written by a kid (originally from the Anchorage area) who’s studying Sociology and serving as a research assistant on social justice-related stuff, and likely looking for any potential thing that could be perceived as an ‘injustice’ so he can say ‘a-ha!’. He’s set his sights on Dr. Seuss.

I don’t see this issue getting ANY traction over the long haul. Geisel is in the DNA of Dartmouth, and there are enough sane alums to eventually squash this silliness. (That said, there are also enough angry-at-the-world alums to celebrate this and use it to foment yet more anger at white males over the short term, until they find another target–which they always do.)

  2. OMG, I had better keep my dog inside! My 10 year old Labrador Retriever’s name is Sam I Am. You have no idea have much pleasure his name has given to the hundreds of children I have met over the years on our daily walks. There will be no cancelling my Sam I Am!!!

    1. Marlene, great comment! I hope that you have many years walking your dog with the creative name. Most kids under 9 have not been “woked” yet.

  3. If I remember correctly, “Horton Hears a Who” was more about the denial of what was happening to people of the Jewish faith in Europe. This is the first I heard about apologizing for mocking the – at the time – enemy. The student writing this drivel must really be hoping to score brownie points with the anti-Semitic far-left.

    1. Horton Hears a Who was written in late 1953 after Geisel visited Japan, only a bit more than a year after American occupation had officially ended.

      1. So are you saying it was to atone for mocking the Japanese or you were just making a general comment of additional information?

On another note, Yertle the Turtle, written in 1950, was an allegory of the rise and fall of Hitler according to a comment allegedly made by Geisel.

        1. I’m saying it was about the treatment of the Japanese after the war. It may apply equally to other groups, but it wasn’t inspired by them.

“Yertle the Turtle, written in 1950, was an allegory of the rise and fall of Hitler . . .”

          That’s right.

  4. Kid needs to read about the Rape of Nanking and Unit 731. The only thing the US did wrong to the Japanese in WW2 was not nuking them more and earlier – it caused them to become a civilized country.

    1. I wonder which up coming generation will cease to be civilized, because it will happen. History is cyclical, round and round like pedaling a bike. Sure am glad I recognize my mortality and the lack of time left for me.

      1. As Seneca noted, “It’s not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot of it…Life is long, if you know how to use it.” I sense you are not a time waster, very old white guy, and know how to use what time is left for you.

    1. What the USA and Canada have desperately needed for decades are leaders willing to do exactly that. Trump is the only one who’s even come close, just another of the many reasons he was elected.

  5. What about Hop on Pop? After all, aren’t there families with two mommies? What if Pop is about to have a baby?

    The mind boggles…..
