      2. Once Upon A Time in the West has to be one of the best horse operas ever made. (Henry Fonda is terrific as the main villain!) Then again, should we be surprised, considering that it was directed by Sergio Leone, who was also responsible for Dollars trilogy.

        I’ve got all those spaghetti westerns in my collection.

        As an aside, the supplementary material in my copy of OUATITW mentioned that Leone was greatly influenced by the westerns directed by John Ford.

  2. I listened to Doofus and Company on CTV News Channel this morning. The topic?? Covid-19 and how the Liberals are going to save Canada by throwing a billion dollars at the problem. I was actually quite astonished that Justin could hide his gratification at having the virus show up at such an opportune time. What other catastrophe could have taken our focus away from the native railroad blockades, the stock market crash, investors backing away from oil sands development in Alberta, the growing controversy around the SNC Lavalin scandal and USAF and RCAF jets intercepting *Soviet patrol planes over sovereign airspace.

    Never once however did I hear Doofus mention a word or a dollar being spent towards helping the most susceptible of all to the virus. Our seniors. Elderly couples, widows, widowers and single souls waiting to hear words of encouragement that would help save them from the worry of having the grim reaper rap at their door. Instead, Trudeau talked about money being thrown at those unfortunate members of his beloved middle class who might have to stay home to isolate themselves from the bug. To hell with granny and papa who have slaved all of their lives to make this great country what is it today. A liberal fiefdom.
    Hopefully, this era will pass. And when it does, I hope granny and papa remember to get out there and vote out that unfeeling gang of lowlives once and for all.

      1. Russians have aircraft weapons superior to NATO, thanks to the types like the turd dough. Just their 30mm auto cannons are gas operated and continue to function at the rate higher than NATO cannons even if the aircraft is low on power. These jet pilots really put their life on the line.
        Russians have also heavily invested in the best mathematician and computer programmer brains who work on their targeting systems. They have real stars working on the assembly-level optimization of linear algebra algorithms. Compare that with rampant outsourcing of the North-American IT to India. I see the results of it everywhere and they frighten me. I have two trucks, different generations. The old one’s cruise control is stellar. It kicks in immediately and maintains constant speed under most normal circumstances. Not as good as Toyota Landcruiser used to be in the 90s, but still decent. The modern truck’s cruise control’s handling is infuriating. Sucks to be us.

    Your Golden Bears took care of the hated Tree handily, and will face my Bruins next. I rooted for you both because I hate Stanford and also think the Golden Bears are easier opponents. I hope I am right.
    Liverpool proved to be mortal after all. The home game against Atletico proves to be the reverse of the home game against Barca last year. But no team now has repeated as Champions League champions for eight years. Now with no other distractions, Liverpool can at least make it the best First Division English League (under whatever name) finish ever. The “Invincibles” with 12 draws don’t really impress me. Were Arsenal to have that record this year, they would not even finish first.

      HMS Hood?

      Hood was the last battlecruiser, the Queen Elizabeths having shown the way forward – the fast battleship. Jackie Fisher was mad crazy in love with the concept; ever faster ships with ever bigger guns, and if something had to be sacrificed, well, it wasn’t all that long ago that naval guns couldn’t hit anything beyond a couple of miles anyways, so just strip the armour off – they’ll be fine!!! His ultimate expression was HMS Furious; no armour to speak-of and two 18″ guns, and after they were fired a couple’a times it was obvious that the ship’s structure couldn’t put-up with the recoil – so Furious became one of the first aircraft carriers and the guns ended-up on monitors.

      RN personnel at the time were asking uncomfortable questions of the battlecruisers – like, what are they supposed to do? How can they actually support the fleet? Regular cruisers could scout just as well and cost a whole lot less; and an Admiral with battlecruisers at-hand would be unable to resist using them in the line of battle, where they were not armoured well enough to withstand high-calibre shellfire. This proved to be the case at Jutland, although in fairness to the RN and the naval architects, the RN didn’t learn the lesson about flash protection that the Germans had learned at the Dogger Bank; RN divers have been down to the wreck of HMS Queen Mary and verified that yes, loose rounds and cordite charges were stored in the backs of the turrets. Being stupid about high explosives in an unarmoured ship is a “bad” thing.

      During the Great Depression, the one capital ship the RN would’ve happily scrapped to save money was Hood – it wasn’t good for anything. The Pol’s wouldn’t hear of it – Hood was the “pride of the fleet” and the “cock o’ the walk”, and the public would not have understood. Hood was due on the stocks in 1942 for a comprehensive refit, to include the addition of a lot of armour, including deck armour; Hood having been planned before long-range plunging fire was a ‘thing’, was reasonably well-armoured on the sides but had little on the decks. Sadly, Bismarck rendered the issue moot.

  7. What do SDAers think of Health Minister Patti Hajdu’s remark that 30 to 70 percent of Canadians could get the canoravirus? Even given the ineptitude of Trudeau’s cabinet ministers, that remark was nutty thing to say. And my wife and I are going out this morning to do some staple-stockpile buying. She could set off panic buying today.

    1. Well, if we take her at her word it entails the following.
      That those places with a high concentration of population will be hit hardest.
      Those where the population is spread out will suffer least.
      So a place like Toronto will see a lot of cases, most notably around places where most folks take public transit and places where people tend to congregate that have health issues.
      Oddly I have yet to hear anyone suggest those supervised injection sites be closed till this thing blows over.

    2. I am old enough to remember my mother saying “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. I suspect that most people today either have not heard that adage or haven’t the slightest clue of why an expression like this becomes an adage. The answer is of course because expressions like this are truisms. That is to say that there is overwhelming truth in the expression and it should never be forgotten.

      Our leaders today have zero experience in a real crisis. You have to go back to WWII or even earlier to find leaders that have the foresight to take strong measures to protect people’s lives. Today, those leaders simply do not exist. The closest we have to a real leader is President Trump. For all his tepid measures, a 30-day travel ban from Europe, being the most recent he has received nothing but ridicule. One can only imagine what would be said had he taken stronger measures like those taken by leaders 70-100 years ago.

      Contrast Trump’s tepid measures with those of our PM and his cabal of “post-national” virtue-signalling and woke nincompoops. They have not even had the good sense to close our borders and to order the suspension of large-scale gatherings of all kinds. At the very least we should be in lock-step with our largest trading partner, the U.S., when it comes to travel bans and other precautionary measures.

      Given where we are now and the pusillanimous response to date by our PM I expect the measures that will have to be taken down the road will be serious and extreme.

    1. I went to Costco this morning shoppers cleared out 5 pallets of toilet paper in less than 15 minutes. And this was all before the store’s official opening time of 10:00 am. One idiot had two carts filled with toilet paper. Each package holds the equivalent of 120 rolls. He has a couple year’s supply of the stuff. What the hell is wrong with people.

      It’s long been my contention that most Canadians won’t do anything unless they’re deprived of the NHL playoffs, easy access to TimBits, and cheap beer. With that suspension, maybe some of them will finally wake up.

      1. I longer watch hockey but I knew some do here. I was hoping that with this shaky ground that we all find ourselves on due to the pandemic and the fact that we are living in damaged economic times in the West, perhaps the City of Calgary should reconsider and not build their new mega arena. It is more apparent now that this expenditure would be a total waste of money. I know I’m repeating this sentiment but now more than ever it is crucial to rethink this expense. See more details here:
