I Want A New Country

Change their minds, Alberta.

An Alberta government panel examining how best to achieve greater autonomy for the province is also asking the public if they support separation.

The province’s “fair deal” panel, which was formed last fall as part of Premier Jason Kenney’s push for a new relationship with Canada, has been gauging public support for a range of ideas, such as the creation of a provincial pension plan and increased control over natural resources. An online survey posted late last week added another: separation.

Members of the panel say many people who attended a series of town halls in recent months raised the prospect of separation and that needs to be reflected in their work. But they say they don’t have any intention of recommending that the government seriously consider going down that road.

Somebody find me the link to that survey, please.

Thanks to commentors: it’s here. That said, don’t do anything that will delegitimize the survey, as you know the detractors will be looking for exactly that excuse.

  1. “Kenney’s government plans to table legislation that would allow citizens to force referendums through petitions, which the Premier acknowledged could include a vote on separation if such a petition meets the thresholds set out in the law.
Drew Barnes, a UCP MLA who also sits on the panel, rejected the suggestion that the panel, and its decision to ask Albertans about separation, will add to that anger. In fact, he said, it could do the opposite.”

Subtlety leaving the separation referendum door open by leaving it up to Alberta citizen petitions instead of government directive.

    1. Start collecting the AB provincial taxes and form the Alberta Pension Plan. That should just be the opening salvo.
Send them a message that AB is preparing for separation – if necessary but not necessarily, but time to be taken seriously.
But this becomes an inevitable outcome with each passing day of these Gritniks unite by dividing rule and watermelon agenda.

      1. Why stop there?

        Alberta food plan.
        Alberta car plan.
        Alberta school plan.
        Alberta transgender plan.
        Alberta carbon plan.
        Alberta speech plan.
        Alberta drug plan.
        Alberta medical plan.

What kind of filthy degenerate wants to make any decision, or do anything to take care of themselves?

  2. You can already sense the sneering from our betters.
They are telegraphing how they intend to respond to Albertians telling the ROC that they are not so much leaving as they are being pushed out by the “sit down and shut up cause you have no where to go” response coming from the laurentian elite and their fart catchers.

If you treat someone in a relationship poorly, and live under the belief that they have nowhere else they can go, don’t be shocked when they pack up and move in with the folks next door.

    1. The way the Trudeau Liberals are spending like drunken sailors on shore leave, I have a modest proposal : The Buffalo Purchase.

Since the rest of Canada hates and is embarrassed by “dirty” Alberta and Saskatchewan, selling us for a tidy profit makes great sense. Pay off the debt, get rid of the riff raff, win-win.

Perhaps a consortium of nice Commonwealth countries would love to own some prime real estate next to the US, world’s biggest economy – location, location, location. This includes direct US links by rail and highways. Add in access to abundant energy sources, potash, uranium, copper, gold, base metals, a bounty of agricultural products and perhaps even diamonds. Forest, plains, lakes and mountains are all here. Don’t exclude the value of around 4 million of the nicest, hardest working people in North America who are used to paying high taxes, being robbed blind and generally being treated like garbage by a faraway government. So new, foreign politicians wouldn’t have to do much to be better overlords than Canada in order to ingratiate themselves to the citizens of Buffalo. All in all, it is quite an attractive deal for prospective investors.

And really…wouldn’t everyone involved be happier?

      1. And really…wouldn’t everyone involved be happier?

Because Alberta might benefit from that, it won’t happen. It’s been that way since Lougheed and PET butted heads.

        1. I don’t think it was heads that Pet and Pete butted. They were on the same side.

      2. Let’s pursue this line of thinking.
The US, regardless of who sits in the White House or controls Congress or the Senate will not allow a foreign interest to buy territory on the NA continent. There is bi-partisan consensus that should such territory come on the market at the very least the US will declare it a protectorate if they don’t buy it outright.

        1. An auction perhaps? Limited to english speaking democracies (or consortiums), of course.

          “I’m at $500B n I wan $550B, $550B, bid on $550B, I’m at $500B would you go $550B, $550B …

A childhood friend’s dad was a cattle auctioneer. Instead of simply passing the salt at the dinner table he’d auction it off to us kids, to our eternal amusement.

      3. Why sell your souls to another set of morons ? As bad as they are I can’t easily think of much better ones ?

        Run your own country !

Why not offer President Trump the money you currently send to Ottawa for equalization ( say for 10 years ) in exchange for US guarantee of your new sovereign borders. A few hundred US Marines and what’s left of the PPCLI should be able to fend off any Canadian threat.

          1. The “Van Doos” are a Canadian regiment, based in Quebec, and one I would recommend not messing with. You would be surprised, Buddy.

        1. My Buffalo Purchase idea is satire.

That being said…the sad but honest truth is that, at this point, I think a majority of people in Alberta and Saskatchewan would be delighted to join any country that simply promised “we’ll only treat you half as bad as Canada does”.

    2. Good comment, and I think the ROC may be in for a shock. Let’s see if Alberta gets the same “please stay” treatment as Quebec. I do not think they will, but I expect nasty tactics aimed at thwarting separation. This is much like Brexit. Not everyone will be happy, but it is a step in the right direction.

    3. “fart catchers”?? Are you an old Frank magazine reader? I hope so. I’d forgotten that lovely and accurate description.

      1. I remember that term from my Frank-reading days as well, My, my, there seem to be quite a few of us on SDA.

  3. What is the process for repatriating Alberta’s National Parks? Is there one? No Province or Territory has been more generous than Alberta in this regard.

    1. They would simply become parks. And whatever entity Alberta becomes part of, the courts can never be above the democratic will of the people. Judges simply can’t resist the urge create law.

    2. Saskberta’s first war of aggression should be to annex Mt PET and then rename it appropriately.

      1. I think decorum would prohibit calling it, well, something not suitable for polite society, however appropriate it might be.

Pity, a name like that might be good for the provincial economy as it would become quite a novel tourist attraction as a result. (“Come see Mount #$$%&%$*@!”)

    3. Instead of the current four, we would wind up with five classes of park. Basically we just add one level of park.

The one oddball thing is with Wood Buffalo since the main office is in Ft. Smith, with the highway coming over from Hay River. It would be hard to manage the AB portion out of Ft. Chip. Might make sense to downgrade Elk Island to a prov park and convert the AB portion of Wood Buffalo to simply be a wilderness area with no hunting or development allowed.

If these are our biggest challenges, independence will be a breeze.

  5. What the f*ck? I go to the link in the G&M and there on the panel sits Preston the Turncoat Manning?
The guy who sold out the West to promote carbon pricing in Canada? Hes on the Kenney panel?
    Please tell me thats wrong.

    1. Preston Manning, through the best of intentions, set us back 20-30 years. I believe that he is a good, decent and honest man…but hopelessly naive.

    2. In my opinion the Survey is not serious, a sop for those advocating for departing Canada. Full of contradictions, it presupposes that Alberta will remain in the Federation. I don’t believe any meaningful conclusion can be derived from the “data” collected. WEXIT!

    3. presssssssston maaaaaaaaaaaanning

      1. What to know scary? My grandmother was engaged to his father at one point. Her father wouldn’t hear of it though.
Gaaaah! Uncle Preston. Now there’s a bullet dodged.

      2. While I was teaching, one of the administrators in my department was a hard-core “conservative”. He thought that the Reformers or the Ralph Klein PCs could do no wrong.

I liked goading that person about that, so, one day, I found a picture of a turkey looking at itself in a mirror. I added a caption, which I thought fit, and posted it in the lunch room. It was something about Preston Manning, who had hopes of winning the upcoming federal election, modelling his future prime ministerial garb.

The administrator in question was unamused, for some reason…..

  6. Strange, the Grope & Fail didn’t include a comments section. Did they not want the Lefty Liberals, Laurentian Elite and the folks in the 416, 905 and 514 area codes to say what knuckle draggers we are?

    1. I’ll be interested to see how many respond and claim postal code T1A and the next few.

“Mr. Premiere we find that the 3.5 million respondents overwhelmingly reject separation, equalization adjustment and a fire arms officer”.

“Tangentially we have asked Stats Can to confirm that there are 3.2 million people living in Medicine Hat.”

  7. They should consider the government go down that road, though not necessarily as a first step. People need to get past being spooked by separation. It’s kind of like moving to a new high school. I don’t mean that in jest. Alberta will always have Canada as part of its history, but leaving is choosing to shift a longstanding administrative structure to something new and perhaps better suited to current needs. They may not solve the tidewster issue, but other challenges in Alberta can be addressed with separation.

    1. Agreed. Just as the British Empire will always be a part of Canada’s history, there comes a time to part ways.

  8. Let it out and see what the ROC says. It won’t be anything nice. Smug, arrogant fart catchers like Bob F**khole Fife will shake their heads in derision. Believe me, I’m surrounded by the sodomites. I sometimes marvel at my restraint.
And I wonder what K-becers will say? They are the biggest hypocrites in this quadrant of the galaxy.

  9. There is a definite issue with the “separation” question in that poll…

The poll starts out with a statement something like “How much will the following improve Alberta’s standing in the Federation?”

So for the item “Separation of Alberta (and possibly other provinces) from the Federation” the answer obviously is “Not at all” since we would no longer be in the Federation. Not a very well-written poll…

    1. My understanding, Clear Thinker, is that the question of separation was added to the survey after it had already been posted. I agree that if Alberta were to separate the rest of the survey becomes moot in its entirety.
But, the correct answer to this survey if you want separation and you want the Government to know your opinion regarding it, must be “A Lot”.
Think of it as the answer to the question “how much would Alberta alone or with other Western Provinces separating from the rest of Canada help Alberta improve its place?”

  10. I will go to the survey. I would have liked to have gone to the panels when they came to town, but didn’t have the chance to get there.
We must move beyond empty posturing and rhetoric and be ready to enact real measures to bring forth a New Dominion. One that truly respects individual freedom and the dignity of the individual.
Consider this my friends, we live in a country where any day now, jack-booted gauleiters will break down the door of an author(AN AUTHOR!) for writing a book uncomplimentary to the current regime. Meanwhile, foreign funded and backed thugs hold our country hostage. Is this a nation worth defending? Worth belonging to?
I, personally, am frustrated in my own current situation that I am unable to do more and be more involved beyond some comments on SDA, surveys and letters of support to Michelle Rempel. I truly hope that she will not waste the time of all of us like Preston Manning did and become the leader I know she can be. I will be with her 100% at that time.
I will say this to the naysayers however, there are technologies coming down the pike that will profoundly change the way our energy is produced and delivered. They will be a true game changer for our province

  11. Completed the survey.
This panel of washed up nobodies and failures have no authority and need to get out of the way.
We are done with them and they do not speak for us.
We will hold our referendum and we will win it decisively in favour of WEXIT.
That is real authority and power.
    Then we will negotiate.

  12. Found the link, sent it to over 100 folks on my messenger list…

    My last answer was:
Implement the Firewall ASAP, once done, you MUST show pros-cons for a separate state outside of confederation…followed by a free and open referendum and ensuring that Non Alberta Orgs have ZERO Standing or influence in said referendum…particularly Public Service Unions…and UN apparatchiks.

  13. Somebody suggested putting in the comments section of the survey that the Alberta government demand Ottawa declare Alberta a distinct nation within Canada. Given the long history of Alberta being “out of step” with the rest of Canada, I think it’s a fair to say that we probably have less in common with the ROC than Quebec does.

  14. presssssssston maaaaaaaaaaaanning
seriously irritating demeanor and that, that ‘crackle’ in his voice.

    You can’t fix Stupid

  17. It’d be a shame if a huge number of responses on the remain in Canada question were from Mr totallynotfake. It really would.

  18. The whole survey looks like an excuse to increase the size and power of government, increase taxes and reduce individual freedom.

  19. My only worry is Alberta leaving but Manitoba staying. I’m getting old to think about moving.

  20. one question kinda miffed me, for what it’s worth Alberta has a constitution called the Alberta Act. Do the Alberta bureaucrats not know that?

  21. 7. Are you… (Select one)

  22. So an NDP MLA and a political science prof express their disapproval over the option of separation being included in the survey. Apparently, in their universe, any mention of independence from Canada is fanning the flames of separation and exacerbating the situation. Here’s a newsflash for these two out-of-touch intellectuals. The fanning of the flames has been going on for quite a while and it’s not the doing of Premier Kenney or the panel who have publicly stated that they’re not big fans of that option. It’s quite apparent that Hoffman and Williams perceive regular Albertans as uneducated, uninformed rednecks sitting in their 4X4’s, reading the survey and proclaiming “Separation. I never thought of that. What a novel idea.”

The comments of Hoffman and Williams conjure up the image of a woman, physically and mentally abused by her spouse for decades, finally going to family and friends and a counselor for advice and being told not to mention separation for fear of “exacerbating” the situation.

    1. I sat in my 4×4 and drilled oil and gas wells in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta for some 28 years. I got my education in the very parts of Canada that look down their noses at those of us who drill for those resources such as oil and gas and the metals they use in manufacturing as well. Got rebar, c-ment, copper wire, zinc to rust proof that Beamer, steel rails, heavy trucks, Nuclear power, hydro pylons and bridges? Vinyl siding, paint, lubricants….ball bearings to make your bike wheels turn, plastic piping for sewers and potable water? Glass for windows and electric lights?
Without resources you’d be living in a hide tent, wearing animal skins and rubbing two sticks together to make fire to cook and heat. You’d smell bad too and be missing teeth by age 30.

  23. My only concern is what the federal government will do. When Quebec was first talking about separation Trudeau Sr. remarked that if Quebec votes for separation on a Monday night the tanks would roll in on a Tuesday morning.

I don’t think Trudeau Jr. is any different from his father in this regard. I also think he will be more ham fisted about it.

    1. Canadians would not accept that. We now have a formula for separation, called the Clarity Act. No province should be forced to remain in Confederation.

  24. What a panel.
Pretty obvious Kenny was just buying time when they set those bozos up.
However that they have added Separation to the survey is a sign of how quickly events have bypassed the “Federalist Kenny”.
The attacks on Alberta have been relentless.
The Federal Government and their Media Party comrades are promoting Western Separation.
Whether by intent or just their natural arrogance and ignorance..matters not,the actions, the breakdown of Trade, order of law and lack of order, are a boon to the Angry Westerner.
Every speech by that character playing at Prime Minister is another few thousand westerners recruited for independence.

If the Federalists wantCanada to continue, they have one chance.
Every treaty that exists between Quebec and Canada, had better apply to Alberta and Saskatchewan.

    No equality?
Done with these fools and Bandits.

Notice. So far none of these supporters of Confederation, has made the case for Alberta continuing to put up with this robbery.
They are quick to sneer, slander and insinuate, but not one solution from any of them.

    The Buffalo Purchase?
    We have already made it.
Siphoned off via Equalization which never equals benefit to any westerner.
We leave,we owe Can Ah Duh nothing,by my calculation they owe us,big time.
And financially an independent West, not cursed with the debt and doom legacy of the East, will thrive.
Any “purchase” will be us taking over select parts of the bankrupt Confederation,if the citizens swear by our constitution.
And as a bonus,in the eyes of the Cult of Calamitous Climate worshippers in the East,With Buffalo gone,Can Ah Duh’s carbon emissions drop dramatically.

I am supporting the Nation of Buffalo.
First it will buffalo the Hair Apparent.
And our Eastern Comrades can kiss our rump.
Any repatriations will be paid to our supposed debtors in Buffalo Chips.
If we get real annoyed we can stampede right over top of our enemies.
    Cause it is our culture.
    Buffalo Stomp!

  25. Zero representation from the Agriculture, Oil and Gas Services, E&P, Forestry, or mining sectors who employ a majority of the voters on this panel. Not one person who has got their hands dirty here , wouldn’t be proper.

  26. I don’t have the time to review what was posted

In the GTA half of the over the counter medicine has disappeared today

I took that poll and I live in Ontario

Anyone with an internet connection living anywhere in the world take this pol’

So that tells me Kenny doesn’t give a shit

So the poll is broken before it even started

But that’s how governments roll in Kanadistan

  27. From the Globe comments section:

If Kenney is such a Federalist why is even allowing a survey on separation? He should be campaigning hard as to why they should remain in Canada instead. Go ahead Alberta. Separate. You’ll find out that Brexit was easy compared to Wexit. A reminder you’ll take with your share of the debt. Jasper, Banff, Waterton are National Parks not yours. There are military installations in Alberta Government of Canada property. Pay for it .Say bye bye to Canada’s health care OAS CPP (except for what you might have earned to date). Go ahead have your own police instead of the RCMP Get your passports ready even to cross into British Columbia. And by the way you are still landlocked and getting those pipelines just got a lot harder. Oh and good luck in dealing with First Nations who won’t be amenable to your separation. Kenney is a fool and those who support Wexit are even bigger fools. ”

    1) Alberta doesn’t have any share of Canadian debt. We have been a net contributor to Canada. Canada owes us money when we separate. (Because we are nice we will accept 60 annual payments of $20 billion and only charge Canada 3% interest…you’re welcome!)
    2) National Parks are in Alberta and belong to Alberta. Canada will have no say in taking them away from us.
    3) Bye Canadian health care! And good riddance. No more line-ups, waiting a year for MRI’s, etc. I will delight in being able to buy private health insurance for half the cost of what I pay in the portion of my taxes that go to government health care.
    4) Bye RCMP…no more doors getting kicked in looking for my goose gun or sitting in their cars when blockaders are holding us hostage I guess.
    5) We will definitely be paying for the military installations and brand new equipment/weapons. Probably give a big raise to all military personnel that want to stay and defend Alberta. Canada’s annual defence budget = $20 billion. Alberta donation to Canada = $20billion per year. Coincidence? Ha. I wonder if the USA would license Alberta to start making A10 warthogs…you know to diversify our economy.
    6) Get your passports ready to visit BC or fly over our airspace. Rail car and truck inspections will carry a $1000 fee before crossing through our country (looking for rats). Likely slightly reduced in exchange for LOTS of pipelines going through BC and Quebec.
    7) First Nations can chose to stay in a wealthy province or move to Canada. We welcome all who want to contribute and work for a brighter future! What’s more, we won’t discriminate against anyone based on skin color, beliefs or gender (either one is fine).

    Bwahahaha.

    1. By my way of thinking, the author of the Globe comment was motivated by one of two factors.
      1. Ignorance is bliss. The writer probably couldn’t spell equalization, never mind trying to understand it. As for not even allowing the option of separation … I wonder what the writer’s opinion was when Quebec took this very issue to referendum and continues to drag it out of the closet when things don’t go its way. This comment was probably composed by a stupid Liberal as evidenced by an abundance of smugness mixed with an absence of facts.

      2. Whistling past the graveyard. There is a slim chance that the writer is astute enough to realize that the loss of Alberta would be disastrous for the country and is terrified (rightfully so) at the prospect.

      I suspect the former.

  28. What amused me about the panel is the business/economics/academics on it.
And their refusal to consider separation as a possibility to begin with.

The hard fact is that Quebec has taken more loot out of Alberta thru equalization than the Spaniards took out of central America and these deep thinkers are OK with that? WTH ?

As I said before – our kids come first. And our people need jobs to support their families.

Ottawa’s social engineers can kiss the UN’s butt and go and play with all the solar panels and wind power they want.
