So if he’s a Democrat he’ll get no jail time. If he’s a Republican it will be years in jail.
I just don’t get it. When I was an intelligence analyst with the CF and received my TS//SI ++ clearance both CSIS & another agency conducted crazy background checks on me i.e. reliability, credit score, dedication to country, etc. Part of my indoctrination included reading a booklet about what happens in order to get human sources, our techniques and what happens when a source is uncovered, to include the years and the $$$ it took to get a source on board. I also had to watch a classified video about grave consequences to nation and advantages an enemy would have over said nation, etc etc etc etc. Very grave outcomes. For me it was jail. That’s the easy part.
So that some numb nut would willingly provide TS intelligence to someone WITHOUT A NEED TO KNOW – and not cleared warrants the death penalty. Assange & Snowden also come to mind here.
Oh, there will always be such compromises of classified material for all kinds of reasons. Frese would have been vetted and indoctrinated much like you were.
A big part of being “read in” and signing off your name on umpteen forms when indoctrinated is simply meant to pre-empt the (admittedly lame) “no one warned me it was wrong” legal defence.
In the case of Assange, the guilty party was really Manning, who actually compromised the material. Assange simply took delivery of it electronically. As he is a) not a US national and b) was outside the US when he did it, he was effectively outside the writ of US espionage law (which is why they’re no doubt trying to extradite him on computer intrusion charges instead).
(None of the above should be taken to suggest I’m a supporter of Assange. I’m not. The man is a conspiracy-theory fantasist; had he been smarter, he’d have gone to Sweden, done a few months in a comfortable low-security Swedish jail and be a free man today. As long as he never again entered the US of course.)
– And of course, Reality Winner, who took a document from a SCIF, photocopied it (photocopiers keep records of what they photocopy, especially in SCIF’s), photographed it with her phone and passed it off to some reporter via a private email account on her work computer. She’s currently doing 8 years, and it’s so sad…
