Delta and American Airlines have suspended all flights to China.

“Based on the U.S. Department of State’s recent increase of the China Travel Advisory to a Level 4 (Do Not Travel), American is suspending its operations to and from the Chinese mainland beginning today through March 27,” a spokesperson for American told Gizmodo via email.

  1. The impact on the world economy could be catastrophic if this keeps up. What happens when factories in quarantined cities need to ship products out or receive products from elsewhere? Trade and commerce grinds to a halt as inventories pile up and firms cannot invoice for undelivered goods.

  2. In the 2017-2018 flu season, as many as 61,000 people died, and 45 million were sickened. In the 2019-2020 season so far, 15 million people in the US have gotten the flu and 8,200 people have died from it, including at least 54 children.

    1. Great juxtaposition. I’ve been wondering how this year’s flu compares with those past.

      China in lockdown implies that it might get worse than normal, but starvation (possibly exacerbated by trade interruptions, per Dennis above) is a much bigger problem for the developing world than this disease is.

    1. Everybody hopes you’re right. In the meantime, I’ve been following https://twitter.com/DrEricDing (Harvard epidemiologist who’s done a great job aggregating available information/stats/etc.) for updates. Also, Dr. Scott Gottleib has good info via Twitter.

      There’s an interesting thing in this paper out of India (https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.01.30.927871v1.full.pdf) that indicates 4 HIV functional gene inserts somehow are in the new Coronavirus, which is ‘highly unnatural’. The results need to be replicated elsewhere.

      So far, fatality rates appear substantially higher than the flu we all deal with each year….which becomes a problem if the number of cases becomes huge.

  4. I wonder how much longer before those who promote green initiative will start considering the health and hygiene effects of what they are doing. Before paper bags became cheap and plentiful, everyone had re-usable bags. And they were unhygienic. Cities are now forcing citizens to concentrate their rotting food waste (composting initiatives) meaning more people have more contact with rotten food. What’s next, only allowing people to flush their toilets once a day?

    The reason diseases like this don’t do the damage that they used to in the developed world is that we have access to more food and more nutritious food than our great-grandparents, we have a better understanding of where diseases come from and where they spread, and we have ready access to lots and lots of cleaning products.

    2. This 3rd Ontario patient tested NEGATIVE for Corona at the beginning of this week in Ontario, but was then re-tested two days ago by the Winnipeg lab and tested POSITIVE.
      So… Just how can we trust that all those Canadians who have tested “negative” really are negative? Alberta alone has said 18 people have tested negative.

    Travel screening, Quarantines for some travelers, contact tracings. Everything that should have been done with Ebola last time, but Obama didn’t. And by next Friday, expect a whole lot more restrictions and quarantine categories.

    An expert with the University of Minnesota says that the nCov illnesses in the US will peak in April or May. Remember this all started in China on about December 1, 2019; it is two months later, January 31, 2020, and is still increasing rapidly. Exponentially even.

    This will be what the Spanish Flu was like in 1918-1920. Prep now. Practice your hand washing, make it a habit.

    1. Coronavirus (2019 nCoV) is a new strain of virus of undermined origin.
    2. It’s clearly easily spread, more than likely airborne and survives in vitro for an undetermined period.
    3. Unlike the flu, incubation in vivo has been estimated from 5 to 14 days (lengthy period of time where the virus can be spread prior to symptom onset).
    4. No data is available regarding how long the virus can be shed during and post recovery.
    5. As noted above, detection test accuracy is unknown.
    6. The mortality rate is unknown. Irresponsible people divide the number of doccumented mortalities by the number of doccumented cases. This is incorrect. Morbidity asside, mortality rate is proven case related deaths divided by the total of resolved proven cases (ie deaths / deaths + recoveries). The latest number of recoveries doccumented in China I have encountered suggest a potential 50% mortality rate. (One hopes, as time passes, many more will recover than die.)
    So, if you’re poo-pooing comments of concern, STFU.

  15. Its not another flu bug and according to the Aussies its fatality rate is currently 10 times higher than last years flu outbreak, plus it is transmissible before the person becomes visibly ill. If the fatality rate is higher than the Chinese are admitting then the picture gets much worse;

    “According to the latest Australian Influenza Surveillance Report for the 2019 flu season, there were 812 influenza-associated deaths up until October 6. This made up 0.27 per cent of the 298,120 laboratory-confirmed notifications of influenza reported to Australian authorities.

    This compares to the coronavirus, with latest numbers suggesting 106 people (2.3 per cent) have died out of 4515 known cases.

    Prof McBride said it appeared coronavirus was more severe than influenza, although it may not be worse than severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which originated in China and killed nearly 800 people globally in 2002 and 2003.

    “The difference between coronavirus and SARS is that SARS was not that infectious, it was transmitted mostly within hospitals,” Prof McBride said.”
