Bomb, bomb Iran.

WASHINGTON D.C. (WATE) – UPDATE – 7:30 p.m.: ABC News reporting:

“We have spoken to a source in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) who confirms that three missiles were fired at the international airport and adjoining US military base.
Two of the missiles were shot down by anti-missile batteries and the third missile fell behind the airport but did not explode.”

Well, they weren’t going to do nothing. Now we wait to find out if Iran gets away with the face-saving exercise — or not.

  6. We’ll see. Exactly what did the Iranians target? Modern guidance systems are very accurate, so, if the Iranians sent their missiles, but they hit nothing but dirt and rock, say, 1km away from the actual base, and did zero damage, we know that the Iranians were too afraid to hit actual targets. They know that US retaliation from direct hits, would leave Iran as a somewhat lesser country, than it is today.
    They are cowards at heart, with big mouths. The Arab way.
    Remember Baghdad Bob? Saddam’s ridiculous threats? Hollow threats from exagerrating nutcases.

    1. Makkah is in Saudi, and when I was there the Saudis blamed the Iranians for the 1979 attack on the Grand Mosque.

      Saudis are Sunni and Iranians are Shia – attacking Saudi accomplishes less than nothing, other than inflaming every Muslim on the planet, even the ones, like Saudi, who don’t like the Iranians.

      It wouldn’t hurt Iran, it would just provide them with allies.

            Well, you ain’t there no mo. You should use the version familiar to most of your targeted audience, rather than being so damn pretentious. After all, both versions are transliterations from a different alphabet. What is the difference? That is a lot less egregious than the British just making up names for German, Austrian, and Italian cities because they find the original names, in Latin alphabet mind you!, too difficult or just not pleasing.
            I used to work with a Japanese-American, who gave his surname in the Anglicized version familiar to most people, and made no bones about it. Then this other Japanese-American joined the group, and he insisted on pronouncing the name slightly differently, and with an accent on the third and last syllable, a practice not common in English. That made a lot of people uncomfortable, but the first guy still answers to the original version. The irony is, the first guy is fluent in Japanese, and his pride is not hung up on how his name is pronounced in America. The second guy is barely conversant with the most mundane subject, but finds his pride in correcting non-Japanese pronunciation.
            I am fluent in Cantonese and passable in Mandarin. When asked for my surname in English, I always reply with the anglicized version. When asked for my surname in Cantonese, I’ll of course pronounce the name in Cantonese. As with the first guy above, my pride in my ethnic culture is not hung up on how my surname is pronounced in America.

        when I was a kid in SW Ontario, I could spot her far up in the sky, on training missions, recognizable by the TWO contrails coming out at each point side by side which looked like 4 in total but on closer look was actually 8. ie the ‘pairs’ would quickly combine but I knew what to look for.no passenger planes ever had 8 engines in the 60s.

We know that Trudeau has already displayed his old man’s backbone by ordering Canadian forces(?) out of Iraq and into Kuwait. Macron is French, so we know what to expect there, Johnson, however is an unknow quantity? Does he have the same mettle as Thatcher? This is where the rubber hits the road. This is now a national crisis and how America responds will dictate who is ultimately in charge, a nation ruled by a culture left over from the Seventh century, or a nation that is powerful enough to wipe this pimple off the ass of humanity. Forty years is enough tolerance and patience.

    2. I’d like to be on Trump’s advice team over this. An intentional miss by Iran with no casualties could end up being another Operation Canned Goods or perhaps Operation Mincemeat. The bodies of half a dozen young men killed in car accidents in America could be transported with 24 hours to a forward American base in Bagdad to be revealed to the world press as victims of the attack. Presto, changeo, WWIII without even trying. I wonder if the Mullahs in Iran had ever figured an angle like that. I’m not even thinking along Alinsky’s Rules.

      1. Why would America do that? You have the mistaken impression that the American administration wants war. It doesn’t. But it is its duty to protect Americans. If indeed everything happened as presented, that’s the best possible scenario. The Iranian mullah have been revealed as cowardly in the face of American might. They have learned to toe the line.

I made the comment to show that sometimes plans can lead to unintended consequences. If the Iranians launched these rockets/missiles with the intention of showing that they can tweak Americas nose with no retaliation then they will continue. If however there were Americans killed by these attacks America would have every right to launch counterstrikes to prove that they are not making idle promises. An attack on an Iranian target, small or large, is the only actual response that the Iranians would understand. Tit for Tat. For forty years the Americans have shown remarkable restraint in dealing with terrorists and the countries that support them. If the dynamics don’t change the attacks will continue. What most people do not understand is that Trump has changed the dynamics.

  30. Don’t think this is a no harm no foul situation. Firing ballistic missiles into a neighbour’s territory is an act of war. Remove the threat so it can’t be used again. You don’t want that threat to be held over your head when they have already demonstrated willingness to use.
    In the short term the media will be putting on the act (“we are all Bagdad Bob now”) but who cares.

    They may take measures against countries trading with Iran. France is an example.

    There will be more bloodshed no doubt, and keyboard warriors will clack out their glee, but the few remaining critical thinkers in internetland realize that what happened here is a strategic blunder for the US. They will be evicted from Iraq. Slow, fast, whatever, but it will happen. That effectively ends the Syria campaign.

    Realists know they had already lost and no surprise since the incoherence of their “plan” is shown by the insanity of CIA armed Al Qaida rebels fighting Pentagon armed Kurds. However, this seals the outcome.

    It’s not just Syria/Iraq. In Libya the US allied govt. seems likely to fall. Another US foreign policy debacle.

    Maybe Trump actually wanted this outcome as the “4D chess” speculation posits. I doubt it. This isnt good for Israel and Trump is their staunchest friend.

    Then again its hard to feel too much sympathy for Israel. They made their own deal with the devil, supporting Wahabist beheaders, on the theory I guess that Sunnis fighting Shias would weaken each other and the Iranian state.

    The US could end up in a real war with Iran but that wouldnt last much past 2021 inaugeration day. We’ll see, but “so far so good” isnt going to age well I think.

  37. For those who followed the Iran-Iraq war, way back in the late 1980s, Iran and Iraq exchanged long distance missile attacks, mostly targetting cities. The missiles were mostly inaccurate, reflecting the technology of the V-2 missiles of WW2. I realize the official BDA (“bomb damage assessment”) have not been revealed as yet, but one picture shown this morning shows a bunch of Iraqis staring at a large hole near the airbase. I am wondering why the Iranians haven’t improved their missile technology all this while.

    P.s. There is a good chance President Trump may announce no more U.S. retaliations this morning. His track record is that of avoiding foreign wars, not expanding them.

  38. Trump is truly a magnificent Disruptor-in-Chief. I think he’s looking at the long game, not just his one or two term presidency. He sees that years and years of previous strategies has.not.worked — and is willing to stir the pot causing a total reset of the playing field.

    If he can get a few of these global situations advanced and change outcomes for the better – he may go down as a president just as influential as Reagan. Of course if he slips, even one iota, we all know that the left/media (sorry, redundant!) already have the pejorative paragraphs written.
