I watched that Torstar/Max interview. I liked the way Max clearly stated his stance to people who didn’t want to be there. The English editor (or something like that) went after him with an ad hominem attack. Phillips’ Opinion piece was entirely content free.
Nothing Max said was radical, but I’m not a Socialist. It was kind of amusing that Max was told people compared him to Trump and was asked how he compared himself to him. Point given to The Star in the unintended humor category.

IMO his response to their bs should never get complicated. Immigrants and most already here share the opinion that people wishing to come here should do so in the accepted legal way under the legally accepted rules. There is no need to get bogged down in the minutia of the immigration act.
