    1. Yes, I believe this country is democratic. Generations of the electorate have democratically elected the governments that have enacted the laws that are used to constrain our freedoms. Being democratic doesn’t necessarily entail that a country will be free.

      We have elected and hired government officials at all levels, (e.g. the Statistics Canada employee who came to our home to conduct their labour force survey -“You do realise it’s mandatory?” when I wouldn’t accede to her request to come inside the dwelling,) whose manner is consistent with people who see the ordinary citizens as belonging to Canada like government property, and who see themselves as anointed to rule us.

      It is a constant wonder to me when people complain about our constitutional monarchy and say we are ruled by “Foreign royalty.” The monarch reigns and is born to that role with neither legislative authority nor executive power, and less real freedom than most of us have. But we are indeed ruled. We are ruled by Canadians whose claim to power is that they sought a career in either politics or the civil service and managed to get elected or hired. We democratically chose this, perhaps by default in not making choices, and if we don’t democratically change it, it will sooner or later decay so far that some of our posterity will feel they must change it undemocratically.

      1. Tooner – my definition in short -democracy is the institutionalization of freedom. A choice of unaccountable dictators is much like believing you it’s your choice to be hung or shot is a choice. Freedom is not free and we have squandered that which was so dearly paid for.

Two were NDP and the other was PPC. Anecdotal, yes, but very surprising for this riding nonetheless. The polls are as believable as the ones saying Hillary had a 99% chance of winning in 2016.

      It doesn’t sound to me like something in which the senior elements of a campaign, especially the party leader, would be involved. More like something that the security function decided.

      In this regard, what does it mean that Durham Regional Police “overruled RCMP”? That’s an astonishing statement by Ezra. Did the RCMP go rogue or something? At the very least, that statement suggests that it may not have been a campaign decision at all.

      I have had, in the relatively distant past (prior to, say, the G20 debacle of 2010), a very tiny bit of professional interaction with the Durham Regional Police Service, and quite apart from it placing, in my experience, a very high-degree of emphasis on good public relations, I have had it expressed to me that there is a certain level of disagreement with what is perceived to be a more high-handed approach by one or another of the more senior police services in that particular neck of the Ontario woods.

      I’d say that the parties to this need to get the complete picture to the public.

          I had a lengthy conversation this evening on this item with my wife, who is an actual nurse (R.N. of 32 years service) — not an R.P.N. or an R.N.A. or a P.S.W., etc. No disrespect to the latter specialties (I highly respect what they do, considering the service that they have provided to my late parents), but they often refer to themselves, in general company, as providing “nursing” services, which they most certainly do in some or many circumstances.

          In this connection, I had some electrical work done here at the house the other day, wherein the two young gentlemen did the same work, with equal skill, diligence and courtesy. I found out only later, when I received the invoice, that one of them is an apprentice electrician, as opposed to being a journeyman licensed electrician. They both work under a senior electrician (about 40 years of age), who is a great businessman and leader, who is well-known in my community for his consistent development of young people, and whose company has already achieved senior rank in the local industry. Are they all electricians? It’s how I refer to them.

          Now, as it happens, I have met my new insurance broker only once (there have been many retirements from his company, on account of a change of ownership — guess which one). Nevertheless, we have made several claims in respect of broken windows on my wife’s vehicle, which would be a long side-bar, but interesting! And for another time. With respect to these claims, I have only dealt with the gentleman’s assistant, who is surely on course to her brokerage licence. On a moment’s notice, she knows everything about our policies and about all the procedures involved in the business. Would I call her my broker? It’s how I refer to them collectively (hint: the Desjardins TV commercials are fair and accurate, such is the level of service).

          The kicker, of course, concerns the nice young lady who performed the five-year examination on a certain area of my lower to middle posterior region (it involved a scope) one week ago Friday. She was introduced to me as Dr. “X”, shall we say. A barely-older, from my perspective, non-white gentleman, of completely unassuming manner (I thought he was a nurse) told me what to expect (I told him I already knew). Turns out the gentleman in question is an Associate Professor of Medicine, an M.D. with a PhD, Western University, London ON, who is supervising Dr. “X”s residency on her way to obtaining her medical licence. Is Dr. “X” a doctor? She’s a doctor.

          So, the only thing that concerns me about Mr. Scheer’s claims wrt being in the insurance industry is: did he perform any of his duties in Blackface?

          Because, you know, Mr. Trudeau, Jr. may have served his apprenticeship for being PM under his father, but he has no licence to being one.

  15. From what I gathered on the CBC and the Hamilton Observer, the people who were arrested were protesting against Maxime Bernier and preventing people from entering his presentation. I’m not a Bernier supporter, but we do need to assess the situation before we spew more venom. I don’t have a subscription to the Hamilton Observer, however a friend from that region (Scheer Supporter) read the article and informed me that he failed to see where the police were behaving in an ”anti conservative” manner, or where the press was in favour of the clashes between police and the protesters.

  24. Mad Max as leader of the CPC would have ensured a Liberal majority. The PPC may still accomplish that by siphoning votes from the CPC. Doug Ford has pretty much given Ontario to the Libs. The Dips are going to lose every seat in Quebec with the Bloc taking a lot of those but the CPC should make some gains. Could be a real mess in the end and most likely a minority govt.

The RCMP officers wouldn’t be from that jurisdiction, they are either a protection group detailed to the Leader of the Opposition or they were drafted in to reinforce the local police for general security of the event. So having detained someone they would hand them over to the local police on site or take them to the nearest police station for processing. There an officer in a supervisory appointment, in this case Durham Regional Police could decide to release the detained person. The RCMP officers having arrested Menzies “for his own safety” makes it easier for him to be released without charge or further explanation once the threat to his “safety” has passed, i.e. the event is over. Gets him out of the way simply and easily and leaves him no real recourse. Bringing a suit against them for wrongful arrest/detention will cost him much more than any damages or compensation he could be awarded for the extent that a court would see he was inconvenienced.

    If there is any coverage from the official media it will be unfavourable to Menzies and the Rebel, “crazy right-wing extremists got out of line and police had to intervene. “

    I am writing to register my shock and outrage at the treatment of David Menzies.

    Selectively banning journalists because they might or might not agree with your point of view s the action that might be expected of Communist China or some Fascist regime from the past, not a modern democratic nation. Further harassing them with the police is one step short of what we see and rightly condemn in the news every day in Hong Kong.

    If your party is unable or unwilling to stand tall, answer questions and demonstrate why the people of Canada should consider voting for you, then you will deserve to lose, and lose badly.

    The actions against Menzies were the actions of cowards who cannot substantiate their claims or back what they say. If that is going to be your way of conducting the campaign, then you may as well slink into the night like the cowards you are.

    I am certainly not going to support such a cowardly party, and feel anger now that I had ever spoken in your favour in the past, only to see that I was being tricked into supporting this shameful behaviour. Unless and until there is an actual accounting for this (including the public firing of whoever was responsible), then I suggest that you look elsewhere for support.
