          3. With a nod to B.A., the students from Hong Kong and the “students” from Red China are very different. The former are really the creme de la creme of Hong Kong, and got the best of immersion in traditional Chinese morality and western philosophy. They either have not ever lived under the Chicom, or fled in 1949 to Hong Kong to escape them. The latter have lived under Chicom for 7 decades. In that time the Chicom had successfully obliterated traditional Chinese morality, replacing it with loyalty to the regime and the party. One of the articles in their “Constitution” actually states that it is the citizen’s duty to serve the country in whatever way demanded. That most likely can include espionage. The worst thing Nixon did was normalize the Chicom instead of keeping them pariahs. Were it up to me, no western country would admit anyone from Red China as an immigrant, or as either an employee or a student. Just the fact that the Chicom would allow them here is enough indictment.
            The Chinese have lived under the Chicom for seventy years, much longer than Germany had under the Nazis, and as long as the duration of Communist rule in Russia. I would not trust anyone from Red China unless I know personally he is truly anti-communist, just as I would not trust anyone from Russia, many of whom still harbor illusions of grandeur in the Communist days.

            Many years ago, I was an active shortwave listener and, one day, I heard a broadcast from what was then known as Radio Beijing. (During the mid-1980s, it changed its name to China Radio International, with RB becoming the name of an internal domestic radio service.)

            I sent in a reception report because I wanted to add RB’s verification card to my collection, something which many of my fellow SWLs did. In response, as many stations did in those days, I got a bunch of souvenirs, including that card. It was their way of saying thanks for helping them determine where their signals reached and how I was hearing it.

            Among the stuff I was sent were some magazines, which were largely political in nature. Taking the content at face value, one would have assumed it was propaganda, which it, of course, was. However, reading through the articles, and a bit between the lines, I was left with the impression that there was still the sense that people over there were Chinese first and communists second.

            That was during the tenure of Deng Xiaoping. I’m assuming that changed, particularly after Tiananmen Square. The current crop of Chinese students who’re here likely never heard of what happened 30 years ago and are, quite likely, hard-core communist loyalists. (That would hardly surprising. Some 20 years ago, I became acquainted with a young lady from Seoul and, when I mentioned the Korean War during one of our conversations, she gave me a blank look.)

            The generation which included the aforementioned professor still had recollections of the bad old days under Mao. That prof mentioned to me one day that her father ran afoul of the Cultural Revolutionaries and paid for it accordingly.

          That was the election of 1972. In response, that “strong” land (strong as in solid or full of strength or Strong as in his buddy Mo?) rewarded him with a minority government. Western Canada, in particular, took a disliking to him and shortly thereafter, possibly because of that impudent display of ingratitude to him, he began his war on us.

          1. Remember that – began with his “Why should I sell your wheat” comment to a farmer whose response was to the effect of “because your government won’t let me sell it independently”. Progresses to the “wage and price control” bit which affected us as spouse on upward track at workplace and got seriously stalled. Then on to the NEP which really shut down Alberta; we were fortunate that spouse stayed employed. Funny though, that might be “National” but never did see anywhere where Quebec was told to forego shipping electricity to the US for big bucks and instead to turn the lines east to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Then as now, it’s only the Western provinces who are expected to sacrifice.

            Years ago I came across the book at the Library and picked it up. It was a bore. Luckily for its author, Erich Segal, the movie made him wealthy.

          3. Both Ryan O’Neil and Ali McGraw were rather limited in their acting abilities. That assessment of him was confirmed for me when I saw him in the Stanley Kubrick movie Barry Lyndon, which I absolutely hated.

            As for her, she was eye candy for a lot of teenage boys when LS was in the theatres. On screen, though, she was rather wooden.

        If one of the parties starts looking like the one that is going to cause a great deal of grief for the unelected government bureaucrats and fart catchers in and around Ottawa, that candidate has a good chance of capturing a plurality of seats at best, or holding the balance of power.
        So thats the real ballot question.
        Who do they want to work for.
        Out of work oil patch workers, or a corporation headquarters in Montreal accused of bribery?
        Health care workers at the delivery level, or pharmaceutical companies that want in on a contract for a nationalization of the drug supply.
        Working for the service people that risk their lives, or the rights of those that would wage war against us.
        Will they work for the poor and homeless in our inner cities, or will they work to continue the illegal border crossers that they bus to already over burdened municipalities.
        Will they allow you to live your life as you see fit, or will they pile on with the chorus of busybodies accusing you of being the problem to a myriad of perceived wrongs.
        I am not naive enough to believe that any politician can be counted on to do the right thing when the system is rigged to make compromise the obvious choice.
        What I am looking for is someone in spite of any promises they make, that is going to make life a living hell for official Ottawa and the toadies that treat government work as a meal ticket to be prolonged into eternity.
        I want that person’s election to PM to be a ginormous FU to the Laurentian Elite in Canadian history.
        The chances that my life will improve are negligible, but I will take great comfort in the knowledge that they get to live by their rules for change.

His loyal drooling media asked him lots of softball questions on how wonderful he is compared to Hitler Trump. And of course Groper took time on the world stage to trash the Scheer Nazis at home. The CBC followed the speech with a discussion on how wonderful he is.

    2. The Amazon fires seem to be people clearing land. How happy are the farmers going to be if we start dropping water on them? Also – fighting wild fires seems to be largely a public relations exercise. If you apply a lot of resources to a small area you can affect the outcome. If you are talking thousands of acres, they put on a futile show, while waiting for rain.

      1. From what I read, the actual forest is not burning. It is fires on land already cleared. So probably brush piles lit by farmers. They might chuck some lead at the water bombers.

Give us an EXCUSE!” But I knew a bit about modern militaries; the average Canadian who didn’t, and gets all his news off the CBC, would be sitting in the dark with a quivering lower lip, whimpering in terror.

          And I wondered to myself, “Who is this @$$hole? Where does he get off spouting such ridiculous drivel? WHY does the CBC have him on their panel discussion as an EXPERT???” Then I figured it out –

          He WAS an expert – undoubtedly so. Why? – because the CBC put him on their panel. And nobody without their own information sources would recognise him as a brain-dead bozo mumbling abject nonsense, because the CBC had established his expertise by putting him on national television – and the CBC would not put some brain-dead bozo on one of their world-affairs panel discussions, now would they?

          And that’s how the CBC – and all the other big news outfits – work. We are doomed.

      Way back when, Mr. Coren wrote a regular, anonymous column for FRANK magazine, on its back page. Then his pseudonym was “Aesthete”. Back in the late 1980s and 1990s, I subscribed to the dead-tree publication. Back then I was not a Christian, years before I converted, and reading the Aesthetic column I was still taken aback as to how raunchy and nasty the column was. Coren’s Aesthete would use sexual innuendo to attack most anybody. For some reason (I forget why) Coren’s Aesthetic column stopped — and immediately afterwards FRANK magazine outed Coren as the Aesthete writer. At the time of his outing, Coren was a TV host on Crossroads Television, a religious based network, and the outing ought to have caused a scandal. Yet the dominant liberal-left media did not publicize this scandal, perhaps because they did not want to publicize FRANK magazine or the Crossroads Network.

      My point is that Mr. Coren has been playing the hypocrite game for a long time now. The Wiki entry on him details how, every five years or so, how he would jump from one religion to another — a Catholic one time, then an evangelical Christian the next, back to being a Catholic again, and so on. So now he writes for establishment cartel media, earning big bucks, trashing religious conservatives. It seems to me that, during the past 30 or 50 years, Coren has followed the money. All the time smearing people to earn a quick buck.
