The recent release of NotJordanPeterson.com should be of concern to everyone. This website illustrates that AI technology has now evolved to the point that we will not be able to determine whether audio recordings (and somewhat already, videos) are real or fake. This means that any public or private person can be “made” to appear to be saying anything. Just imagine, for example, the ability that political opponents will have to destroy each other. Former spouses, going through a vicious divorce, can suddenly come up with audio recording of the other saying the most horrendous of things. Didn’t get the promotion you were hoping for at work? No problem, just create an audio recording of your manager acting in an appalling manner and you can get whatever you want at that company.
The evolution of technology can’t be stopped though. So what’s to be done? Professor Jordan Peterson has some thoughts:
It’s hard to imagine a technology with more power to disrupt. I’m already in the position (as many of you soon will be as well) where anyone can produce a believable audio and perhaps video of me saying absolutely anything they want me to say. How can that possibly be fought? More to the point: how are we going to trust anything electronically mediated in the very near future (say, during the next presidential election)? We’re already concerned, rightly or wrongly, with “fake news” — and that’s only news that has been slanted, arguably, by the bias of the reporter or editor or news organization. What do we do when “fake news” is just as real as “real news”? What do we do when anyone can imitate anyone else, for any reason that suits them?

Today’s Sesame Street is brought to you by the letter B.
how apropos.
I predicted this at least 20 yrs ago, with regards to court evidence. FAKE evidence providing an alibi for some mob boss. the fact it creates doubt in that venue gets the acquital.
didn’t think we would have it just yet.
oopsie.
(the good news, if, IF one gets ‘caught’ ummm, ‘mouthing off’, well, just claim it’s all fake . . . . )
Similarly, in the late 70’s, I looked at the progress in digital video capability and predicted that by the turn of the century (2000) people could produce animated video feed that was as real as camera. No more believing your nightly news. In 2000, only major organizations had the computing power to do this; now, I can do it from my desktop.
p.s., I don’t usually complain about the capture, but it took me five tries to get approval this time. Do I look like a robot?
p.p.s. – and the verification expired as I added the p.s. and I had to do it again.
Surely you understand that Our Betters have had the ability to use “Deep Fake” for quite some time now.
But then undoubtedly “Law Enforcement” and the “Legal” system are far too honorable to even consider doing any such thing…
His book is number one on the Toronto Star’s bestseller list again, however the Star is recommending today that everyone buy Atwood’s new Handmaid Tale book on evil Christians.
Disgusting. I watched one episode of the Handmaidens Tale (just to see what it was about) and was so thoroughly disgusted with the ridiculous premise and jaundiced view of Christianity (and other conservative values) … that I didn’t make it halfway through the episode. It sounded like angry sophomoric lesbian Man-Haters, Church-Haters … and Woman-Haters … Femininity-Haters … writing at a 5th grade level of sophistication. Ridiculous.
lol !!!
well Kenji, I even skip the promos . . . .
I havent read a single atwood tome.
latest title, finished today:
Survival in Auschwitz by Primo Levi (an Iti Jew holocaust survivor)
migawd. what a horror. made it so stark, the personal experience aspect.
the volume of hate necessary for deutchland to play follow the leader and wind up
having their *own* nation blow up in front of them in order to slake the hate.
they really did it that way, so distracted by the hate, sacrifice all they had to murder da Jooos.
I even suggested to a dear Jewish friend that the enormous time and resources invested in the holocaust could possibly be one of those ‘tipping points’, aka, what if all the steel and time used to set up the extermination camps had been used to mfg panzers? enough to cover BOTH calaise AND normandy? what then?
but not according to herr adolph eh?
so much incomprehensible hate, both the why and the volume.
and see what we have now, a religion based on hate and death.
oh, and the ‘6 million’? I consider them combat casualties, FULLY credited with THEIR part in the victory.
If you enjoyed that you’ll love this – Elie Wiesel – Night
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_(book)
What is amazing is that Wiesel lived in Romania, they were warned and could have escaped but nobody believed that such a thing was possible. Wiesel’s father even turned down offers to hide them. He had misfortune to have been moved from Auschwitz to Buchenwald in freezing weather just before Auschwitz was captured by the Russians.
I saw the movie that was made nearly 30 years ago. Dreadful rubbish.
Fortunately, that was the only time I ever contaminated my mind with anything remotely Atwood.
Fake news is bad enough, faked news is horrendous and an affront to liberty and free speech, and should be actionable.
Both are meant to mislead, to conveniently believe something untrue, but the latter is overt, not covert.
Both are the final refugees of political scoundrels, the present flavour being so-called “progressive” regressives in politics.
Fool you once, shame on them, fool you twice, you’re a sucker who’s ignorance is easy to malleate and manipulate.
Lemmings should bear that in mind as they head to the polls this October. I predict they’ll vote us all off the cliff.
Interesting piece, but how do I know that Dr. Peterson actually wrote that?
Good one. HA, ha. I guess we don’t know.
Why does he toss in “rightly or wrongly”. Is this a liguistic tic?
Is there any doubt whatsoever about the predominance of propaganda in the news today.
I take that to not refer to the existence of any fake news but news that is wrongly marked fake. The true stories that don’t fit the narrative and are thus called fake and wrongly expressed concerns about all those terrible fake (true) stories.
Mo, those types of stories seem to be getting more and more prevalent.
I wonder what audio/video evidence is about to surface that we are all supposed to doubt the authenticity of?
Its a good thing we have Trudeau’s Unifor panel to let us know what to believe.
This is just another attack on the dwindling numbers of Individualists.
Freedom of speech, association and property rights are being trampled by people like Corrupt Juthtin, the Corrupt Liberal Party of Canada, the Democrats, Greentards and all the neo-Marxist Globalists.
The independent liberty of self-reliant people who don’t need the state controlling their every movement or monitoring their every word will soon be legislated out of existence.
Or they’ll just make up shit about you, take everything you own and throw you in jail.
It’s possibly to digitally sign any kind of media, so as to make it impossible to fake who it came from and whether it’s been altered. The technology isn’t well-understood by non-cryptographers, though. And a wholly original work, like an AI-generated deep fake, isn’t a corrupted version of a source stream.
Ultimately, this is going to come down to people having to develop the habit of not trusting any information unless its provenance can be determined beyond doubt.
Maybe the laws of libel and slander should be applied. It’s illegal to impersonate a police officer. This was be libelous, or slanderous, impersonation.
The “media is the message” goes nuclear…eh. Looks like the certification of communications could play a part in ensuring the source and authenticity. Possibly quantum encryption methods applied that provide the observer some assurance that the message received is from the claimed source.
Another level of deceit I imagine could be a lie presented “live” though a holograph generated imposter (no autograph session allowed would be the tip off).
(just now saw Daniel’s post – took too long writing mine, but at least to say I agree)
Simplifies life immensely,if the source is a Uniparty approved party, then,if their lips are moving they are lying.
Default position,”It is all lies, overt or via omission”.
given we cannot trust any source,we will be driven to reason.
Does it make sense?Does it fit past behaviour? Who benefits?
Do I care?
strike me the power is in getting the mob to react before the rest of the story emerges,so now the mob can’t trust their agitators.
This is nothing new. This also ties in with the killer elites being kicked out of Surrey.
I recall watching the video of the RCMP taking down the Polish guy at Vancouver airport. The problem. The killers confiscated the video that was taken by a non-related bystander. The killers said that they had tasered him twice. When the killer elites returned the video the owner released it to the press. It was bad. I watched the whole thing and listened to it carefully. On the video there is three distinctive snaps of the taser. But only three. The Corner’s report said he had been tasered five times.
These rcmp killed this polish guy and were filmed doing it. The rcmp edited the video. Thats fake news.
Was that that poor fellow flying to Canada to meet his mother? That is such a sad story. A typical example of people just doing their jobs and not reaching out in a distressing situation. I am haunted by that story. It is like a Kitty Genovese incident. Total indifference from those who could have helped.
It does have the ability to disrupt for a while, yes, but ultimately people will just stop trusting video evidence. Honestly, that’s probably the ideal outcome.
Time and date stamp everything.
It is horrific, yet to an extent it will be more of the same
Humans have always believed more in fake things than in real ones
the vast majority of humans cannot tell what is real from what is not.
most humans believe in something silly, be it flat earth or that wearing a certain crystal on your person will attract your soul mate or that diluting something in water a million times gives that water magical power ( homeopathy ) or that a $ 30 electronic device can measure the presence of ghosts
humans used to believe sacrificing an animal by throwing it in the mouth of a volcano would appease the volcano
now in2019 despite mountains of evidence to the contrary, hundreds of millions of humans believe the main stream media is honest, tens of millions of them also believe that Hillary Clinton is a respectable honest woman.
fake audio and soon after fake video will have more horrific consequence, but the avergae Joe and his wife will be as dumb and as gullible as ever
there will be those who know most of those audio are fake and there will be those who believe those audios are real
just like today in 2019 most people when they see a magician show believe he actually puts swords trough the body of the woman trapped in the box, ad the only reason she is not bleeding or dead, is because he truly is a magician
those people will believe every fake audio and every fake video and will be happy to
just post an obviously photoshopped photo on facebook, like a german shepperd dog that is 8 feet tall and say that it weighs 325 pounds, and you will see 80 % of comments will be by people who believe what ever is on the photo is real.
most humans are gullible like 4 year old kids
we have access to knowledge more than ever but it changed nothing, most humans enjoy their ignorance and they will seek “information” that supports their ignorance ( such as tricked photos of a flat earth )
most humans cannot tell between fake and real and are happy to believe the fake stuff
“Humans have always believed more in fake things than in real ones”
’cause dere be magnitooos more of the fakery eh?
very astute CF.
I gave up trying to convince them how to tell the diff when I found out some, what, 10% of nort’ mericuns
really believe the apollo 11 hoax.
oyph.
propaganda really *really* REALLY works.
Some say Mark twain once said that ” It is easier to fool/deceive people, than to convince them they have just been fooled/deceived”
well the day fake audio and fake video will be shown everyday on tv news, this will be even more true.
the vast majority of humans will believe any stupid stuff and will refuse to believe they just watched something fake and have just been fooled.
most humans are gullible as 4 year olds and are happy that way.
I know succesfull educated people, some of whom who made a fortune, who cannot tell between a silly hoax and reality, just as if they were 4 year old kids.
and it is useless to try and explain to them how they got fooled/deceived…they insist on believing.
they hang on to believing silly stuff, like a drug addict hangs on to his heroin.
Twain would know. He fooled people all the time. He would make up his news stories when he worked for newspapers. Some of his reporting was outlandish.
“This means that any public or private person can be “made” to appear to be saying anything.”
Joe Biden is using this excuse.
Just to be safe, I already don’t believe anything unless I can put my finger in the wound.
Tomas. About 55 years ago during basic training we were told don’t believe anything you hear and only half of what you see. That was long before internet and meant only half of what you see in person.
Nice one Tom.
To a couple of points above, I was in a hotel this weekend and rented MIB International (meh… needed better writing and more Tommy Lee Jones). Anyway the rental warning came up and told me that the movie had been digitally watermarked to prevent copying.
All JPG images ages are now geotagged and video otherwise tagged by your newish recording device. Seems to me that technology will solve what technology has wrot.
Down the road I see some form of blockchain type solution for image / video recording. (Followed by yet more government intervention to manage it … and infinite variations of the same $13.99 crappy videos).
I guess the other challenge is that a politician could say something foolish and later claim it was not him. This is a great opportunity for Justin. Could this help him out in the awkward SNC situation? “I know Jody thought it was me, but it wasn’t.”
This is a lot of hullabaloo over not much. Any solution would be so draconian as to be worse than the cure. Deepfake isn’t all bad. Might even be good: it could jam up the surveillance state with so much fakery that it becomes useless.
Learning how to think critically, the scientific method, and how to research any topic, along with a basic knowledge of the historical development of Western Civilization.
Once, you have that then fake news starts to have a faded, speciousness that gives it away.
Digital access to the best minds on the planet discussing and lecturing of every topic is the Gutenberg Revolution 2.0.
The totalitarians are giving it their best shot, but the 21st Century will be there Waterloo.
6.7 million of Common-Law loving Chinese in Hong Kong are the 3rd largest capital market in the world. The Communist Party of China has a choice: to keep their golden goose alive or induce a recession that will drive them from power. Then, who will Justin Trudeau have left to admire… ? Tehran or Islam-a-bad ?
