Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Good. But shouldn’t Berkeley also ban cars?

keep it coming, brah…

Time to fire up the coal furnace and stove I guess.
Dried Cow Pies are an excellent source of cooking fuel.
Driving along the California coast they have Watch for Falling Cows on the highway.
Every year, here in the Bay Area, I read a news story about an “immigrant family” who all died of Co poisoning … caused by their use of an open hibachi on the living room floor to heat their apartment. Hint: Co is the killer … not Co2
Those lucky Californians perhaps they will build smaller homes now because well, climate change is “worsening!”
Climate EMERGENCY :
• It hailed tiny pellets the size of peas, twice for 10 minutes today, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
• The mega sized hostas in the garden were spared, TQ Jebus!
yes…dang, leaving the office and downtown Calgary got HAMMERED by climate change, I have to put up my umbrella….god I hope I don’t have put in /sarc……
uhuh…I live South of 22X Nancy…we got nailed twice & pretty good yesterday afternoon..!!
And what was it overnight…6-8C max..?? Its “warming” so much, I gotta wear a jacket – in Mid JULY for crying out loud.
Warming .? my (_i_).
As or the Eco Imbeciles throughout the LEFT Coast of NA – it really wont matter, the Big one is overdue and for me..? that just means less travel for salmon fishing.
Kenji…Better move inland.
Coolest, wettest July since I moved to Calgary, I think. Except possibly the one year that West Nile was supposed to kill us all, but then summer decided not to show up at all that year. It wasn’t so wet, though, but I’m open to correction from someone with a better memory than I.
Yes, and it’s been a cool, wet July so far on the left coast as well. No campfire bans yet, and it’s entering the fourth week of July.
It’s been quite cool, but hey, we’re all dying of the heat according to the environutters and our corrupt leftist leaders. And the population is singing in tune.
Propaganda has worked very well, hasn’t it?
As for Berkeley. When they are in a climate in S Cali, heating their homes is not as critical with NG, as say……….Vancouver! Yes, former mayor Moonbeam Gregor banned NG in all new buildings going forward. The very same leftists that have railed against the Site C dam, are also trying to convert everything to electric power.
Do Unicorns sneeze electrons?
Leftist leaders are strange creatures. They bawl about climate change, they bawl about urban sprawl. But their decisions in the big cities encourage urban sprawl to continue and grow. Idiots. All of them!
I’m fairly sure a government chosen by lot could do a better job than actual elected representatives. I’m rather a fan of the expression: “Those who would seek power should be forever barred from holding it.”
45% of La LA Land electicity is by gas power generation at ~50% thermal efficiency. Add in transmission line losses and costs of peaking generators etc etc etc…this amounts to a symbolic gesture to the earth goddess. If they were serious, they would ban barbecues.
Today Ontario energy policy is to get people off electricity and dampen peak demand using gas at home. Years back policy was to convert homes to all electric cuz nukes could generate cheap electricity. Then they ran into problems with their nukes. So now we are converting make. It’s all good for GDP.
“””“Electricity on an ongoing basis will be less expensive,” she said.”””Heard it before. When money is for nothing and chicks are for free, costs don’t matter.
PS.. If you can’t boil water for early morning caffeine hit cuz of brownouts, just add instant to a can of coke.

In my local neighborhood, we have a “particulate pollution” crackpot who pushes everyone to buy his “purple air monitors” to SEE just how awful our air has become.
https://www.purpleair.com/map#1/25/-30
He has a particular HATE for backyard BBQ’s … which I use virtually every evening … and he publishes the SPIKES in particulate pollution at 5pm when everyone fires up their bbq’s … and on weekends. He wants the government … to do something about it. My advice to him? Move. Move to Kansas.
Maybe Trump should collude with Rocket Man and allow him to test a missile on California. I’ve grown weary of praying to the Sweet Saint of San Andreas.
What are the limiting factors in plant growth?
water; wait for rain or irrigate
soil nutrients; live with what you got or fertilize
temperature; too cold it stops growing (trees in winter) or just dies
sunlight; in a greenhouse you can augment this
insects/disease/competition; herbicide/fungicide/pesticide
CO2; appropriate levels of CO2 mean more efficient use of all the other factors
What’s the lowest it’s ever been?
180 PPM.
When was that?
About 18000 years ago.
What’s the highest it’s ever been?
7000 PPM, give or take.
When was that?
Hundreds of millions of years ago.
What’s it at now?
Around 400 PPM.
What is the optimal CO2 level for plants?
Anywhere between 1000 and 3000 PPM.
At what level does plant growth on the planet basically stop?
150 PPM.
Can there be any life on this planet without plant life?
No.
Why are you against plant growth?
http://ecosense.me/ecosense-wp/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/CO2-Emissions.pdf
Quick Answer Kevin..??
Cause plant growth allows humans to eat
Ergo – they want us all dead – and therefore the push to delete CO2.
Its either Islamics, CO2 below 200ppm or Social Justice INSANITY …but all 3.? Western civilizaton is beyond doomed….one look at the “squad” of leftist Squids should be enough to convince anyone.
Exactly. Hence we have Agenda 21 and now Agenda 30 with the ultimate aim of making Canada and the western world into one giant wilderness park.
you sir, harumph harumph are an iconoclast. harumph harumph.
lol !!!
I was saying just last nite to a buddy about the climate change propaganda, did you know water vapour is a greenhouse gas?
A; no I didnt know that.
100% spot on! FACTS that every school child should be taught to counteract the hysterical propaganda prevalent throughout our leftist indoctrinated culture.
I’m finding more and more people who realize that they are ignorant are willing to ask questions and listen. They won’t actively seek both viewpoints to get answers (in at least 2 cases of folks I’ve talked to, because they listen to the appeals to authority), but when you put things together in a rational progression (like you’ve done) they can experience awakenings. The pendulum is coming back.

The good graph is at about 1 hr 5 min.
My new Navien NPE240-a … natural gas fired … tankless wh is 97% efficient. When it runs. Because it ONLY runs, when I need it.
https://www.navieninc.com/products/npe-240a
Now … Berkeley City Council … tell how efficient that electron is when it reaches your outlet … to heat your water? 97%? Uh, yeah … get back to me when you calculate all the losses
And is there gonna be a City Council buyback program? Like guns? Are the citizens of Berkeley gonna bring their existing gas stoves and water heaters down to city hall and exchange them for inefficient electric ones?
Whoa! Nice H2O heater, Kenj.
No worries. ‘Yer’ panicking.
The new rules are for new constructions.
And there is is. “Only gun nuts think ‘registration leads to confiscation’.”
And only the blind think government is ever going to stop there.
Your omnipotent moral busybody overlords will torment you without pause or end, for they do so with the approval of their own consciences. They will also do it while they cook/heat water/live comfortably on their natural gas while they actively deny you everything they have and take for granted.
Meanwhile, politicians of Conservative Inc. will declare that everything is wrong, but nothing really has to change, and people will continue to vote for them.
Resistance heating with electricity is about 99% efficient as I recall. The losses of course are in generation and transmission. The idiotic Wynn government in Ontario was actually proposing even much the same thing before it was voted out of office.
30% according to the Govt. …
https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/home-heating-systems/electric-resistance-heating
Wait , wut? if I’m reading the story correctly Berkeley committed itself in 2009 to reducing its emissions by 33% by 2020. They haven’t even come close — in fact their emissions are UP 18% (from 2009 I guess, writing is abysmal) and somehow they think not having NG lines in some new construction is going to accomplish… um, What, exactly? These people need to be in some kind of care facility, not making decisions regarding the public weal.
They are very very close. With google’s help they will be writing new history before it happens and it will all work out just like they said a la 1984 and the memory hole/ snark
It’s easily achievable. To reduce emissions by 33% by 2020, they just need to reduce their population by around 60%.
My God, they are all nuts. If only their insanity was inflicted only on themselves no one would care, but they make life a living hell for those who do not share their insanity.
These decision makers didn’t just walk in and take a seat at the table, enough other fools voted them in.
While I feel for the ones affected who voted otherwise, this town is getting exactly what it voted for. As it is for new construction (so far) it is decision time to look elsewhere or not.
“These decision makers didn’t just walk in and take a seat at the table, enough other fools voted them in.”
This applies at all levels of Government, from Condo Corps to Federal.
He who has the gold, makes the rules.
My condo building has about 200 units in it. More than half of the unit factors/units are held by two groups (one religious, one commercial), which makes it exceedingly hard to get anything good done in a reasonable timeframe or with reasonable effort. Had ownership and distribution of unit factors been required to be part of condo documentation for realtor packages, I probably would have argued a lot harder with my wife about buying in this building, leaving aside other negatives I tried to tell her about. I naively thought that being involved with the condo management would be helpful, but it’s just frustrating. They don’t even allow observers to their regular meetings, and you have to pay to download minutes. And they’re trying to force through new bylaws (which we admittedly need to update) that I guarantee will create more problems than it solves and do nothing more than drive down the property values in the building because of their unnecessarily draconian nature…to solve problems that aren’t really problems, or only are for one of the board members. If it weren’t for the 75% requirement to change them, the last attempt would have gone through easily. At the special meeting about them, I asked a simple question about one of the new clauses that would automatically assign blame and costs to a potentially innocent party: the resultant furor went on for over 30 minutes as it snowballed into many similar complaints. It’s not hard to ask these questions when you simply wonder, “How would I like this if it happened to me? I can’t afford that stuff, or to appeal it to CQB.”
Projecting that forward to other levels of government just makes me angry. People are amazingly short-sighted, even when their own well-being comes into play.
WOW!!! Top Trending Video – Top Gun: Maverick – Official Trailer (2020) – Paramount Pictures
https://commoncts.blogspot.com/2019/07/wow-top-trending-video-top-gun-maverick.html
Gotta see that movie, just for old times sake. Probably horrible, like the original, but who doesn’t love fast jets? And as much as I really don’t like Tom Cruise, compared to me he has aged really well.
MM
I shall second that opinion in its totality…LOL.
Damn. Goosebumps.
I third that, though I saw the original when I was 16, so I wasn’t at all critical of the trope-tastic movie itself, because FAST JETS!
I think Tommy figured out a most-excellent way to coax IMAX dollars out of my overtaxed pocket.
I never saw the original. I was in my mid-20s and newly wed, and it came across as mindless, so I didn’t bother. And even though it has Cruise in it, this one could be interesting if they do a realistic look at aging and stymied careers — but I’m not holding my breath.
Considering the mild climate of Berkeley in conjunction with the area’s risk for earthquakes……… not really such a foolish idea.
They are called Quake Saver Automatic Gas Shut-off Valves and they will turn off gas flow to a home should an earthquake occur.
Yes ambient matters. I takes 1 calorie of energy at a pressure of 1 standard atmosphere to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water 1°.
But it takes 540 calories to turn it to steam & given how heat is transferred, that pot of macaroni won’t cook sitting outside even in California. In case you wondered.
There’s a reason it’s called “Ber-zerk-ly”…
Is this the state where there are planned electric brown-outs to combat forest fires? Asking for a friend who choked while laughing and now can barely talk. What next from the left coast crazies? Banning of sewage? Or the homeless?
Al Gore may have lost the 2000 presidential campaign, but it looks like he is still running significant parts of the country.
He only took up the environmentalist mantle because he wanted to stay in the public eye after he lost. Could not bear to just go away, and was able to do even more damage from the sidelines, with the help of a sycophantic media.
Not unlike another, more recent failed Dem.
In mild climates, instead of running an extra infrastructure system to homes, wouldn’t it be cheaper to burn the gas in power plants and heat the homes electrically? It would cost a lot less to heat in winter than it would to cool in the summer. Utilities are all about capital cost. Last month I spent $30.1 on electricity and $83.56 getting it delivered.
Nuclear is actually the answer.
B–uild
A–bsolutely
N–othing
A–nywhere

That is the world you live in. There will be no infrastructure of any kind, there will be no new construction of any kind, there will be no power, heat, food, transportation of any kind…
And California will keep voting for it.
When you stop electing people who have not been affected by anything they have ever said or done going 12 generations back, wake me.
Every time I read my Enmax bill, that part always makes me throw up in my mouth a little.
Jeebus scar, that’s scandalous. I don’t have my Hydro bill in front of me, but it has all sorts of other fees and charges, that are small, in comparison to the actual electric charge. But it does Include a deadbeat tax now, that helps pay the bills of deadbeat Hydro customers that forgot/refuse/“what, I have to actually pay for power?” their late bills. Cuz it’s so cruel to cut off the power to non-paying customers…………..jeez, maybe Hydro should throw it on their house taxes instead? This is BC today, socialism for all!!!!
Anyways, my Fortis bill resembles yours. Summer time, only the water heater consumes NG.
Basic Charge. 13.48
Delivery. 6.09
Storage and Transport. 2.05
COST OF GAS. 2.17
Municipal fee. 0.74
CARBON TAX. 2.78
Clean energy levy. 0.10
GST. 1.37
Total 28.78
Overall, a cheap bill and typical of summer months, going back many years, but before the costs were all split out.
How do I pay more in carbon taxes than the actual cost of gas??????
Because they calculate it from the total, not from your consumption. Because doing that, you know, would be…fair…ish….
When I started paying my own utilties, I was flabbergasted how little of it was actually consumption charges. Low rates don’t matter squat when the rest of the bill dwarfs that by an order of magnitude in some cases.
I have the same thoughts as you every month about utility & heating bills. I live in Sask and own a house heated by gas that I haven’t been able to sell. Thank-you ‘dear leader’ for your energy policy that is slowly killing an industry.
My water bill each month is nearly $50 (I’ve left the water on but no one uses the house) typical electrical bill is $70-$80 each month (nothing is running in the house except gas furnace and lights when we go in to check the place) even the ng bill for the last few months (when the furnace would not have cut in) is $30 to$40. It has been a learning experience to watch the paper work/administration charge cost more then the actual resources that you are consuming.
If you want things to change, you have to figure out how to make the lights go out in Toronto.
You have to figure out how to get the mountains of human feces deposited where Nancy Pelosi shops and lives.
You have to figure out how to make their daughters live with sex grooming gangs in the private schools they send their children to.
You have to figure out how to get their families to start receiving threatening calls from MS 13.
You have to figure out how to get someone other than a deplorable killed by a serial killer deported 560,000 times in the last month.
Move the homeless encampments/ICE detention centers of the country to Georgetown, Dupont Circle, Rockville / Bethesda / Chevy Chase Maryland, Alexandria Virgina, … etc. etc. etc..
And we know for a fact that works from the reaction to Trump saying he would bus all the illegals at the detention centers to the sanctuary cities.
They didn’t even blink before going into a foaming rage.
Unfortunately the climate of San Francisco is so mild, that they can get away with this virtue signaling without really suffering from heat or cold.
Victor Davis Hanson who is a fellow at Stanford University, said that the building his office is in has neither heat nor AC but he’s never uncomfortable there.
I have no AC, because with the exception of a few really hot spells, I benefit from the natural AC of the Bay Area … when HOT temps in the Central Valley pull cold air in from the ocean. My PG&E bill is at its LOWEST in the summer … at $150.00/mo. In the winter it touches $ 400.00/mo. because I live OUTSIDE the Bay in the suburbs where the temps. get sub-freezing regularly. Yes, VDH could survive w/o heating or cooling in Palo Alto which is ideally situated out of the worst of the fog freeze, but not in the HOT suburbs, but with very mild winters. Palo Alto is the banana-belt of Bay Area weather … just about ideal winter and summer.
PG&E charges us the HIGHEST electricity rates in the nation. So much for being a mild climate, when there are lots of “green” energy projects to pay for
I thought you should be the best person here to comment on this string. Is Berkeley serviced by PG&E? I am almost positive it is, but you know for sure. Do you heat water and cook with gas? How much is your gas bill if you have gas?
I hate cooking with electricity, which is much more inconvenient than gas.. The heating element is delayed, both in getting hot and in cooling down, the latter wasting a lot of energy, as compared to gas which you can turn off. And if my surmisal is correct, in the Bay Area, cooking with electricity would be much more expensive than cooking with gas.
The extra cost and inconvenience with electricity may just push the residents to rarely, or just never, cook, but go out to eat. The extra carbon budget of driving the car to the restaurant more than negate whatever presumed reduction by forcing the residents to cook with electricity.
Gas is the best heating source for cooking. It goes without saying that the city council of Berkeley is nuts. If they can do this, think of all the other things they can ban. Leather because they want to boycott cattle. Rubber because it is derived from crude oil. We will all have to wear grass sandals in Berkeley. Wool clothing. Silk because the manufacturing process requires inhumanely killing the silkworms (traditionally by dumping cocoons into boiling water). Books because paper comes from destroying forests …
Maybe start environmental protests whenever they are fixing potholes on any of their streets …
A lot of dirty fossil fuels go into making asphalt …
Good!
And I hope Montreal, Ottawa, Trawna, Edmonton and Vancouver follow suit.
Vancouver already has. They are cunned stunts! They are brainwashed believers in solar panels, cuz they work so well in Hawaii. Never occurs to them though, that in Hawaii, they don’t need heat for their homes, just for hot water which is easy.
We truly are being led by deceivers, who do a great job getting the stupid in society to vote them into power.
Speaking of that, TruDOPE is on his way to term#2, thanks to stupid voters and a split opposition.
“…who do a great job getting the stupid in society to vote them into power”
I think it all started when parents stopped reading their kids stories like the Pied Piper of Hamelin.
….and just remember, while daily consumption may vary, every politician drinks the same Kool-aid. ‘Oh Yeah!’
https://www.producer.com/2019/07/premiers-agree-climate-change-action-needed/?module=under-carousel&pgtype=section&i=
Ive never used elec as the main source of heat.
it dries out the air and causes all manner of problems with furniture, sinuses etc.
dry dry dry dry. well put in a humidifier. oopsie, no air ducts to position it!!!
nor the electrostatic air cleaner that zaps cold viruses and likewise allergens all year round when the fan is switched on
and a 2 speed fan ensures there is very scant temperature fluctuations.
did I mention gas is a fraction the cost of hydro? mebbe not in californicatre.
I hope some of these quacks die of a ripple effect of their numbskullness.
DanBC-
Really, beyond voting against bill C-16 – his finest hour – what has Scheer dons for Canada?
why didn’t he whip/lead his members on this vote concerning the inalienable right of Canadians to free speech?
The non-fight of Scheer and his CPC against C-16 contains in a nutshell why Trudeau will win – the CPC holds nothing sacred. There would not be a split a in the opposition if they did.
Blame all you want either way. History will only remember TruDOPE term #2.
And we will all be persecuted for it.
and another thing, a ways back the local idjits at chitty hall announced they were gonna slap landlords with delinquent electric bills.
uhuh.
solve one problem by creating 10s of thousands more.
I pointed out in the age of privacy act, the landlord would NOT be allowed to check up on the tenants’ account balances, and thus word would extremely quickly spread that the trick is to *stop paying said bill about 3 months before the end of the lease* or whatever time period it ends up being.
the consequence naturally, would land in the lap of conscientious, responsible tenants (sound familiar?) who would see security deposits mushroom. rents would go up, etc etc.
dumbfcukery everywhere now. we ARE pooched, we HAVE passed the tipping point.
and the local landlord ass’n went after them BIG TIME.
Berkeley just out Berkelied itself – no more gender based words.
Examples – manhole covers are now “maintenance holes” and frats and sororities are now “collegiate Greek system residences”, and no, I am not making that up. She, he, his, her now they, them, their, etc.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/berkeley-gender-neutral-words-1.5217871
So …. no new homes will be build and more people will sleep and poop in the streets. That ought to do it.
They want you in these: http://www.yert.com
And they pick the month of January to do it.
Dan from BC – you have it good! Here is an example of my electricity/gas bill in Alberta.
Electricity 23.39
Admin Charges 6.77 ( to print mail bill)
Delivery Charges 33.31 distribution Charge
Transmission Charge 17.08
Balancing Pool Allocation 1.27
Rate Riders 2.38
Franchise Fee Paid to Airdrie 8.57
TOTAL CHARGES 69.38
When all electricity used was 23.39.
Gas 10.45
charges 55.26 which included carbon tax as utility was for May 21 to June 21
I wish you’d stop dumping on California. We here in the Golden State may have very high taxes, high crime and homelessness, lousy roads, and too much government that does nothing, and corrupt politicians…and..where was I going with this??
