A proposed series of programs about Paul Bernardo by the fifth estate has divided the staff of the CBC’s flagship investigative TV program and outraged women’s rights advocates, who say it is unconscionable that the serial rapist and murderer might be given a national platform.
Producers envisioned that the episodes, part of a bid to shore up the program’s falling ratings, would include interviews with Mr. Bernardo and his ex-wife and accomplice, Karla Homolka, according to a source.
Too bad the platform will not include a noose and trapdoor. Two sets for both of them.
He should be given the chance to pull the lever that sets her feet flailing. Then he can be hanged drawn and quartered.
Its 2019 and we still have the anachronism of a tax payer funded state broadcaster. It is beyond ridiculous. I so resent, no, make that hate, having to pay for this. The CBC speak, I hate it. Hate speech.
But we have to have a government department using our tax dollars to produce boring pop culture sitcoms, lie filled documentaries, and fake news. It’s one of the core duties of government.

If Canadian ‘culture’ as portrayed on CBC Radio is any indication, the series would have had broad internal support had staff figured out how to work in: an LGBTQ victimization angle, why Bernardo/Homolka’s grotesque behaviour is expected to become more common because of climate change, all topped off with an annoying hip-hop musical score.

Decision makers at CBC can not credibly claim not to know, that many serial killers derive a tremendous amount of perverse pleasure, from the knowledge that they have once again caused their victims families to relive their loss. OTOH … my wife and I watch A LOT of the ‘old-people’s’ channel … the ID Channel (Invesigation Discovery). We know it’s the ‘old people’ channel because of all the adult diaper advertisements. We can’t get enough of Crime and Murder stories. Lots of young attractive women with lots to live-for slaughtered because of one wrong move, or simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. If we are going to be bloody-minded about this, then freedom of expression means only one thing: on with the show and consequences be damned. In other words, let the viewers decide for themselves about the gruesome twosome.
But of course, what we are witnessing is a confluence of modern pieties: a state-funded media corporation, women’s rights activists, government meddling in journalism, etc., etc.
But the viewers don’t get to decide. The CBC gets taxpayer money and there is no consequence for their decisions to run garbage TV, be water carriers for the Liberals, dump iconic Canadian Hockey tunes, pamper to special interests or criticize those that actually pay their bills. This is the real point, and yes those two sicko murders should never receive the celebrity the CBC will gladly, willingly and gushingly give them.

I quit watching CBC decades ago and my greatest disappointment with Harper was that he hadn’t simply announced that the taxpayers tap was totally turned off. That they are receiving untold amounts of tax dollars very year continues to anger me and that they would be wasting this money promoting the human filth that Bernardo & his former wife are is disgusting. In the period that we live in with satellite/cable/internet broadcasting why do we need a state funded broadcaster anyway. If you can’t garner the finances on your own to stay on the air then you shouldn’t be on the air.
Don’t forget, folks, in ever-so-progressive and (some) rights-conscious Canada, Homolka’s and Bernardo’s votes in October count just the same as yours and mine.
