Battlespace preparation for the coming assault on agriculture by the animal rights activists known as your provincial veterinary associations.
Does the Canadian veterinary profession turn a blind eye to animal abuse? Or rather, to certain kinds of animal abuse?
It’s a fair question, given the relative silence from the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) on the treatment of animals at the Calgary Stampede — which kicks off Friday — as well as the active participation of some of its members who work as vets in rodeo events.
The CVMA has a commendable policy on animals being used in entertainment, which states that the association “opposes activities, contests, or events that have a high probability of causing injury, distress, or illness.” It also states that “animals should not be forced to perform actions or tasks that result in physical or mental distress or discomfort.”
So why doesn’t the CVMA speak out about the distress, discomfort and risk of injury to rodeo animals at the Stampede, or at the more than 100 professional and semi-professional rodeos in Canada?
Legislators could stop this in its tracks by stripping these associations of their powers to legislate through the back door of professional regulation. In Alberta, fewer than 300 people were able to create de facto “law” for the entire province through a show of hands.
They’ll be back for more. Phone your MLA. It’s time for the agriculture ministers to step in.

You can be sure that castration of horses, cows, and pigs will be here shortly.
Only took three years to work this one out.

Canada’s highest court has just ruled that some sex acts between humans and animals are legal.
In a quixotic ruling, the country’s high court ruled that a man who was on trial for raping and sexually exploiting his own daughters wasn’t guilty of “bestiality.” The man reportedly, “smeared peanut butter on the genitals of his victims and had the family dog lick it off while he videotaped the act.”
The convicted man took his case to the Canadian Supreme Court, demanding that the bestiality charge be nullified. In the end, the court agreed.
As a result of the rape case, the court ruled 7 to 1 that humans having sexual contact with animals is OK if there is no “penetration” involved in the act.
In its ruling, the court decided that the legislature had not clearly defined the terms in the country’s bestiality laws and the way the statute is written should be read to only outlaw animal penetration, whether that penetration is animal to human or vice versa.
“Although bestiality was often subsumed in terms such as sodomy or buggery, penetration was the essence — ‘the defining act’ — of the offense,” the court’s ruling states as reported by The Independent.
The high court’s lone dissenter, though, said the ruling would mean open season for the sexual exploitation of animals.
“Acts with animals that have a sexual purpose are inherently expl

Most animal sex acts not against Canada’s bestiality law: court
TORONTO (Reuters) – Canada’s bestiality law only bans sexual acts that involve penetration, the country’s Supreme Court ruled on Thursday, a blow to advocacy groups who argued animals should be afforded the same protection from exploitation that humans are given.
Supreme Court judges ruled 6-1 in favor of a man from British Columbia in western Canada convicted for sexual assault and bestiality after he involved the family dog in the abuse of his two stepdaughters.
The man, known only by the initials “D.L.W.” to protect his stepdaughters’ identity, successfully appealed his bestiality conviction in a provincial court, arguing that according to the law, the offense of bestiality requires penetration, which his actions did not involve.
Justice Thomas Cromwell, writing for all concurring judges, said in the decision that penetration has always been required to secure bestiality convictions and courts do not have the power to rule otherwise.
“Any expansion of criminal liability for this offense is within parliament’s exclusive domain,” he wrote.
Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella, the lone dissenter, wrote bestiality is ambiguous under the law, which she says intends for all animal sex acts to be illegal.

Forcing an animal into any sexual act is now outlawed in Canada after the Senate finalized a bill Tuesday to close a loophole in the country’s bestiality laws.
Prior to the bill’s passing, there was no law against forcing an animal into sexual acts that excluded penetration.
Well, it’s that time of year again. The annual belly aching and whining about the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. There are rodeo’s all across Canada, but the holier than thou progressive elites only vilify the Calgary Stampede. Of course the State Broadcaster always leads the charge because like their Liberal masters they hate Alberta and all it stands for.
He has a point. To a degree. Aborting a baby clearly causes distress to the unborn child. By the same logic abortion should be ceased?
Legislators ignore this PETA slow creep to de legitimize every aspect of interaction between humans and animals at a peril equivalent to their better late then never reaction to the organized effort to destroy Canada’s energy resource industry.
Shrug. Farmers and ranchers are screwed, and it’s their own fault. The farm/livestock associations have been in bed with the politicians and PETA for years, and the memberships have been pretending that it isn’t happening.
Yeah no kidding. How rich to militate for federal crop insurance and a myriad other subsidies and label anyone who opposes them as enemies of the poor little farmer, and then be surprised when the government shivs them.
Kate, the article you link about how 300 vets legislated for the province concerned their defacto ban on declawing cats.
What Edmonton really ought to do is fix the problem and only the problem. Ban cats, the way many Australian states ban rabbits.
Confiscate and destroy every cat in the province.
Give Albertans an amnesty period of a year to have their cats re-homed outside the province or put to sleep.
After that, on the spot fines of every fat, ugly lesbian NDP supporter caught with cats of at least $10,000 per cat, the cats to be destroyed on the spot with a policeman’s gun or cruiser, and the cat lady to be held without bail till she coughs up the money. Offer generous rewards to decent people willing to report cat ladies to authorities.
Many NDP supporters will leave Alberta rather than be parted with Mr. Fluffy. Good.
According to the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries Queensland (DPIFQ), the maximum penalty for keeping a rabbit as a domestic pet is now AU$30,000.
So CA$10,000 per cat would be lenient.
More evidence that you are, so far the biggest whack job on this site.
More like a moby here to try and Warmaniza SDA. I keep telling you people, stripping web sites of their s.230 protections isn’t going to hurt Big Tech, it’s going to hurt places like this.
Just an aside. On Harley’s with tires of equal size on both ends, the front tire is often referred to as a cat squasher.
Cutting of your own foot would have more effect than phoning your MLA. A phone call or letter to your MLA, and an empty plastic bottle, will get you 5 cents at Sarcan.
Your MLA, cares only about its pension. Pension first, pension only. Your MLA is entitled to its entitlements. Your MLA, is on the other side.
“A phone call or letter to your MLA, and an empty plastic bottle, will get you 5 cents at Sarcan.”
True. However, if you pen it as a letter to the editor in your local rag and cc the arsehole, you can have a bit of fun.
Not true! Enough pressure will deliver results. This is basically how S13 got repealed. Harper didn’t care it was one glorious MP who forced the issue.
There was also a Stasi clause to the Alberta vet rules. A vet is required to report abused animals, ie animals which I assumed means dew clawed or tail docked by others. Montana vets are going to do a thriving business in ears, tails, etc. It simply drives the socialists crazy(er) when they can’t control other peoples behavior.
This is all fun and games, just wait until you can’t get a P.Eng stamp for your church because of the “inherent violence” of Christianity.
Agriculture ministers and ministries simply shouldn’t exist. Neither should these quasi-government professional organizations.
Fricker by name,fricker by nature.
What a maroon.
Here is the problem;”The problem is that the veterinary profession serves two masters: clients and animals. ”
Total rubbish.
Vets serve who ever pays their bills.Otherwise they are no longer employed.
No business will repeatedly hire an active impediment .
The writer of this opinion piece is the normal slime, too gutless to act openly,he/it attempts to manipulate others.
Vets walk a very fine line,if they become too expensive or too obstructive they are cancelled.
Shoot Shovel and shut up are time honoured tradition, not very long ago most farmers had no access to a vet,due to distance and finances.
Cutting your losses on a sick or injured animal was just one of those chores every farmer performed and still must perform.
As I recall,it took legislation to force vet services upon some farmers.?
The Humane Society is another festering pit of hypocrisy and virtue signalling.
There is as much humanity in those committees as there is concern for the environment amongst Gang Green.
At least PETA is honest about their con.Who else would call themselves People Eating Tasty Animals as they launch their over the top idiocy?
I have known dozens of veterinarians in my lifetime. Most are honest hard working who try their best to care for animals who are sick or injured.
Over that lifetime the profession has become dominated by women. It has increasingly moved to small animals and changed from rural to urban.
If things continue the way they are going it’s conceivable that even owning a pet will be illegal.
I’ve been hitting the rodeo circuit this summer. Yes animals get injured in rodeo events. They get injured at the dog park too. No animal is better cared for than rodeo stock.
