“If over half the people support a policy that no “mainstream” party supports, then in what sense are those parties mainstream? ”
“If over half the people support a policy that no “mainstream” party supports, then in what sense are those parties mainstream? ”
Mainstream as defined by Mark Steyn more than a decade ago (paraphrasing from memory): a center left host moderating the discussion between hard left, soft left and the loony left.
It reminds one of all the adjectives the lefty MSM loves to throw around about popular, true conservatives: “controversial”, “unpopular”, “divisive” etc. ad nauseum. What they really want to say, but lack the intellectual honesty to do so is, “We’re pretending this is a ‘news’ piece but we’re really using a factoid to lever in a thinly-veiled excuse for an opinion piece, and we don’t like this guy and we don’t want you to like him either.”
Common sense is an endangered speecies .
Mark Steyn essentially on point.
But a more emphatic analysis would describe Ms May’s Tories as attempting repeatedly to deliver not the “horrid Brexit” but rather “divorce with bed privileges”.
The voter for Labour and Tory knew that they were getting a good rogering from either party. Nigel Farage brilliantly played their towering hypocrisy and conceit against them. The ordinary folk opted for divorce from the EUSSR and to retain UK sovereignty.
Either way the voter has determined that they are receiving a vigorous “rogering”.

or his Swedish cousin “Bonk”…
Then we have the old guard “Blair of the media” suggesting that if they merely had one more referendum they could finally end the “never-endum”.

It is this kind of cossetted blinkered vision that the elites keep trotting out, and then claiming they are serving the people. It is too bad that the effete elites have turned totally deaf ears not only on the common man; but on the common good.
The Re-moaners are once again apoplectic that their ‘pillage the people project’ came up short.
Brexiteers carry the day…congratulations, Nigel Farage on a campaign deftly waged and executed!

Well said.
Hopefully the Brexiters and the sundry other European anti-Globalists continue to gain momentum and thwart the Marxist aims of the Climate Change/Globalist cabal who are out to destroy western liberal democracy.
well the RCC Poop knows you people in here are nothing but racists:-))))
@NME666
Well last weekend I had a sit down dinner with a chieftain from Liberia. My host is blacker than the ace of spades, and he had the same opinion vis a vis immigration. So now my black friends are ‘racist’…? While Pope Francis may be concerned that there are some indeed with a racist bent, the demographic decline is the real reason for mass migration; not to mention cheap labour for billionaires, and orchestrated wars which go far beyond the reach of most ‘man in the street’ local populations.

Mainstream = self-appointed ruling class who lie by promise and get away with it by winning power, their only imperative
Additionally Obama spied on everything that moved. Why is his admin’s conduct or other such nonsense elsewhere surprising?
My understanding is all parties said they would respect the Brexit vote. They clearly didn’t but who’s fault is that?
It’s our fault, the voters. If we don’t punish parties and leaders for breaking promises democracy becomes inert.
People hoping revolutions, riots, separation or other “unconventional political participation” will change that are dreaming.
The rubber meets the road with the electorate. Unless people inform themselves and use their vote wisely, society is doomed.
The apathy will not abate, alienation will worsen and the arrogant elite attitude around deplorables will remain systemic.
Churchill quipped (or paraphrased): “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.” What he said.
Hence…the Reform Party of the 90’s…when it was quite clear there was no difference between Libs and PC’s.
Sheer bashing begins in 3, 2, 1….
Forget that,been there done that.
UDI is the next logical step.
Can’t live with them, sure looks good without ’em.
Our experts keep insisting they define the mainstream, even after President Trump’s election mocked their wisdom.
Canada can support an alternative to the tired old trio, Bandit 1 ,2 and 3 offer no respite from the stealing,no end to their meddling and no knowledge of the damage they do.
The accumulative damage is immense.
Most of our current “leaders” could not organize a pissup on a brewery, not even if they fell into the vat.
“Normal” and its brother;”Every body knows” are the tools of the herdmasters, but no one ever seems capable of defining either.

Exactly.
Steyn wrote that, “The western-based Reform party could not get elected nationwide, but they kept certain political ideas in play (which moved the governing Liberals to the right) and eventually enabled them to engineer a reverse takeover of the Tory party.”
I would suggest another reverse takeover has occurred. Reform is dead and the old Laurentian Elite so-called conservatives have retaken the party.

Thanks,memory holed that one.
As I’ve been saying for four years in a Trump context, “it’s easier for the base to get itself a new elite than for the elite to get itself a new base.” -Mark Steyn
