For some time now it has been quite clear that equality is really only about high-power CEO jobs. The “glass ceiling” is a terribly upper-middle-class obsession.
Women are not stepping forward to become, say, carpenters, plumbers, electricians or HVAC technicians. Yet these sorts of jobs – not the few high-falutin’ lawyerin’ and doctorin’ and executive ones – offer the best opportunity for most women to realistically gain equality with men in the workforce.
There are some programs that try to encourage women to go into trades. A few do, but not many. A bigger tell is that “equlity” is always about women integrating into traditional men’s work. Where are the government programs encouraging men to go into traditional women’s fields (teaching, ECE, nursing, social work, care givers, etc.? ) There are none because part of achieving “equality” is devaluing fields women have an affinity for? It is hypocrisy really. And of course we must have affirmative action in politics because women would not otherwise be able to compete. That is the message anyway.

The Dippers hate the oil industry and I wouldn’t be surprised if they deliberately fubared the water bomber contract in the hope that all the oil sands facilities would burn down. By letting that happen, the Dippers probably hoped that the oil companies would give up because it would cost a lot of money to rebuild those sites.

That’s one thing that surprised me about where Fort Mac is located. If one flies there from, say, Edmonton, most of the landscape is forest. Suddenly, in the middle of all the trees is the city, almost as if it was put there by accident.
I have always thought that the politicians didn’t want a buffer because the locals would realize they don’t have to pay so much rent for a closet. They could just make the city bigger.

a) women occupy only 1 in 4 positions. Ladies please stop studying teaching and learn a trade. Women occupy something like 70 to 83% of high school and elementary school positions. This obviously influences girls that they cannot do other work.

For some time now it has been quite clear that equality is really only about high-power CEO jobs. The “glass ceiling” is a terribly upper-middle-class obsession.
Women are not stepping forward to become, say, carpenters, plumbers, electricians or HVAC technicians. Yet these sorts of jobs – not the few high-falutin’ lawyerin’ and doctorin’ and executive ones – offer the best opportunity for most women to realistically gain equality with men in the workforce.
There are some programs that try to encourage women to go into trades. A few do, but not many. A bigger tell is that “equlity” is always about women integrating into traditional men’s work. Where are the government programs encouraging men to go into traditional women’s fields (teaching, ECE, nursing, social work, care givers, etc.? ) There are none because part of achieving “equality” is devaluing fields women have an affinity for? It is hypocrisy really. And of course we must have affirmative action in politics because women would not otherwise be able to compete. That is the message anyway.

But my observation is that traditional women’s work is devalued by feminists and the government, while women moving into traditional men’s fields is applauded — whether women are truly qualified or not. As it turned out, while many professors were working on their master’s degrees, I spent time in gas plants and checked drawings in a design office.
I figured that if I wanted to be an engineering professor, I should know something about what I’m teaching. In fact, while I was an undergrad, those profs who had worked in industry or worked with it were the ones I had the greatest respect for.
Instead, I found out that doing what I did meant I wasn’t dedicated to research. It came as no surprise to me when I encountered engineering professors who may have had written lots of publications but couldn’t tell the difference between a U-bolt and an integrated circuit.

The Dippers hate the oil industry and I wouldn’t be surprised if they deliberately fubared the water bomber contract in the hope that all the oil sands facilities would burn down. By letting that happen, the Dippers probably hoped that the oil companies would give up because it would cost a lot of money to rebuild those sites.
As for Fort Mac catching fire, it’s likely the provincial government didn’t bet on that happening, but once it started, probably hoped that people would abandon the area for good.

That’s one thing that surprised me about where Fort Mac is located. If one flies there from, say, Edmonton, most of the landscape is forest. Suddenly, in the middle of all the trees is the city, almost as if it was put there by accident.

LindaL. You make some astute observations wrt male and female participation in occupations. Research has shown that there are significent differences between men and women in brain physiology. My fave Jordan Peterson who knows neurology as well as a physician summarizes that male brains are greatly interested in ‘things’, while female brains are greatly interested in ‘people’. This is, of course, a generalization. Nevertheless it is valuable.
A fun little article was written by a woman in IT a few months ago. She noticed that a number of male colleagues came in on Monday all enthused about some experiments they had done over the weekend. The woman had spent her time going out, hanging with friends, and similar activities. She ultimately decided to change careers because she knew she could never be so caught up with work that she could ignore her social life.
As you say, it may be necessary to more highly value ‘people’ occupations. The problem is that you cannot tie a teacher’s salary directly to student grades.
